The video is based on general complaints I would get when talking to people at maimai. I had someone complained to me about how they weren't able to talk to people and make friends when they went to maimai, so this video is for them. I usually find it easy to converse with people within maimai, but I understand if people feel like this since most players act like NPCs, so it doesn't make it easier to socialise.
Another big complaint is money, since it's like more than 3 dollars for a game, so it becomes a money sink. I feel like it's easy to maintain, it's just about controlling how much you play and worrying about other financial factors first, then you can waste your savings in the arcade. Think about spending money at the arcade is comparable to spending money to go out or to play a sport. Then it doesn't sound abnormal :)

A fun alternative to maimai is to go to your local laundromat and wash your clothes. You can opt out of social interaction, hit the sides of the dryer, and save money! And you also stink. Please wash your clothes.

I've been playing rhythm games since 2003 and have met most of my friends through the arcade. I'm one of the founding members of a local 300+ member rhythm game community. We have monthly meetups and are always welcoming new members. You make a lot of good points, especially the one about being a high ranking player and welcoming newbies it's very true a lot of people are intimidated by the game after watching high level gameplay, so I always make a point to encourage them to play and let them know that nobody is going to judge them. We all started out on lower levels. The biggest key is just striking up a conversation with somebody and waiting in queue is typically the best time.

a simple "hello" usually gets you in the circle most of the time source: me, an antisocial who gets a date through maimai (already broke up doe)
My local scene has a whole-ass Discord server for both of the major rhythm game arcades and also the other two or three arcades in the region running Pump It Up Phoenix. Makes socialization a breeze; everyone knows one another because we're all always in touch via the server. Both of the major two arcades are right by metro stations too, which makes them super easy to reach. I am not too proud to admit one of the reasons why I continue to take classes is so that I get free transit via my U-Pass. Not only that, but on the way home on the metro is actually a Costco, so if I get hungry, I usually just leave, get off at that stop, and get a $1.50 hot dog (that's 3/4 of a play in local currency; after tax, closer to 1 play.)

1:39 Korean here. There are quite a number of arcades (and a lot of serious, dedicated players as well) in here, and solo-queueing is a frequent thing around here. The difference here from other countries is that you don't really wait in line for your turn. Instead, there's usually something like this board thingy where people place their cards/coins/credits in line, which practically acts as a queue. It's very similar to how in retro arcades you used to put your coin at the corner of the cabinet before you wait in line, but minus the waiting in line. Less need for socialization for me!

Fym Maimai players don’t communicate, we got the best language of all! Aggressively pointing at the other person until one person breaks for first song pick.
2:50 That’s me on P2, wasn’t necessarily clapping him for the nice score (don’t get me wrong, it is), but I was clapping because he just beat me to win the tournament in the finals match 😅 But I will say for socialising, just let the other player pick 2 songs while you pick 2 of your own, and you don’t need to compliment them either if it feels awkward, just being courteous and having basic etiquette is good enough imo. Eventually you make friends from knowing each others’ shared interests and hobbies. 🙏

1:29 hello it me also this video is just too accurate, right down to the moondrop iems lmaoooo i think what made socializing a bit easier for me is that as soon as i started playing i went to find a local maimai group online. with that i could feel less shy with interacting bcs i may have already seen (and talked to) them online. though this doesn't change the fact that i'm quiet irl and can't approach people easily
The fact that this entire video is circulated by maimai makes me happy, this game is truly great
3:31 I felt overwhelmed to the point watching watching more experienced players is more entertaining then actually trying the game itself-
Ok so I’m glad this video exists because I play DDR and one of my goals is to make friends, in person and online, but it just seems so difficult for me to do so. One time someone blocked me on Discord after I asked her if she plays DDR in Pennsylvania. Seriously, I’m not even joking 😂

My local arcade has a little rack to put your card or anything (and I do mean anything, I have seen everything from trading cards to tesco clubcards) to mark your place in the queue. I guess this leads to most social interaction being "Whose card is this?" and waving around the card next in line to the general Maimai audience. I will say though just be inviting if anyone seems interested i.e watching, maybe while holding tokens or a card etc. No reason to gatekeep the funny washing machine and how I got hooked on Maimai is when a guy who frequents my local noticed me watching and showed me how the queue works and such and now a place I went to for fighting game stuff has become my frequent washing machine rhythm game hang out.
i love your editing style, this video was such a vibe, 10/10
I started going to the arcade several times this week and I go there very early so I don't have to wait for my turn cause there's a lot of people playing Wangan Midnight Maximum tune 6. I'm happy because I just made friends with new strangers (they are so welcoming). Its nice to talk to them, and I'm a new player there so they also teach me about the game. There's this cute guy I'm keeping an eye with... we talked every time we see each other in the arcade. Also we have a really good chemistry, you know what I mean, Haha!! I wish we could talk again more :)) This one is interesting because he was the one who approached me when I was just starting the game. Also the editing in this video is so good

@@N3bulAura id go for the chu 2 if you are on a budget, they are only 20 usd and sound amazing. you can get the original chu (also 20 usd) if you dont mind a non-detachable cable, as these come with their silicon spring tip eartips, which are the best eartips ive found personally (and they are normally like 10 usd on their own). if you want to spend more i'd go for the aria 2, they are like 90 usd. other than that they isnt really anything worth buying unless you are a hardcore audiophile willing to drop 200-1000+ usd. as a bonus i will say that i recently picked up the moondrop space travel for 25 usd and im really enjoying them. they are a wireless iem that sound comparable to airpods pro sound quility wise. surprisingly they have decent touch controls and decent anc/passthough. only downside is the battery life which i think is like 4ish hours per earphone and 12 hours more in the case. not really a problem for me though. also they have anime girl sound effects for the voice prompts lol. honestly the perfect purchase for a beater pair of headphones. only other thing i'd add is that moondrop's quality control is not the best. i've ordered like 6 iems and ive only had issues with one pair. you can always return them though. im lowkey passionate about this company if you cant tell lol.

@@N3bulAura I already typed a comment earlier but it seems it didnt work? so ig im typing it all out again lol. for 20 usd go with chu 2 or original chu: these are amazing, chu 2 come with detachable cable, while the original come with my personal favorite ear tips (silicon spring tips, which are like 10 usd if bought on there own irrc) but dont have a detachable cable. these have been dominant in the 20 usd iem market and still are. for 90 usd go with aria 2: these are a solid choice in the price range. there are plenty of alternative options in this price range from different companies though, as these arent nearly as dominant as the chu. but like i said these are still a solid choice. this is really the max id recommend the average person spend on iems, but they have some crazy iems in the 100-1000 usd range if you happen to be mr money bags lol. for wireless earbuds that are 25 usd go with space travel: i got these recently and they have been great. sound quality is comparable to airpods/airpods pro. only downside is that the battery life is 4 hours per earphone and the case holds 12 hours, but it really isnt an issue for me. and as a bonus (or not, if you're normal) all the voice prompts are in an anime girl voice. other than that moondrops quality control isnt the best, ive had a issue with 1 out of my 6 orders. but you can always return them if they arrive broken/you dont like them. i havent looked much into the 30-70 usd price range, but i find that many reviewers just recommend you get chu or chu 2 if you are looking in the price range of 50 usd and under.

1:37 Chinese player here. While there're 1400+ arcades in China having maimai DX (and growing), it's still far from satisfying everyone: maimai DX is soo expensive and so hard to buy (WAHLAP as the CN server reseller, selling a maimai DX at 88000 CNY, or 12000+ USD, and require the arcade owner to buy other stuff and made a 500,000 CNY order first before being able to purchase a maimai DX), so normal arcade have only 1 maimai DX, 2 would be rare and 3+ would be the arcade paradise in China. And considering that the 1400+ arcades are spread across whole China, even in large city, it's still too less maimai DX to satisfy all the players from high school and university: one of the arcades I often go (because there're chunithm and usually it's not many people) will have 4~5 pairs people waiting in the queue for maimai, people even have a whiteboard there to keep record on who's in the queue and who's next So solo queuing is also rather rare in China when there're multiple players waiting: - it would be considered impolite / rude to keep others waiting extra long for only your needs, or sometimes getting criticized in local chat group - it's super rare to encounter player who is social awkward, (I think I can only remember 1 player but she has a partner to play with (I had to solo-playing as the other 2 girls don't want to rotate...)) - but yes there're some times when top tier player (rating >16000) want to farm something and playing over and over again and they'll ask others to approve for solo queuing, but only when there're 3~5 people. - Also if you do need some time practicing over and over, arcade usually opens at 10AM and closes at 10PM, most player will come after lunch around 1:30 PM, and leaves after a short period after dinner around 8 PM, so either wake up early, be the first player and enjoy your 3 hours soloing in the morning, or go to the arcade super late, stick at the maimai until staff asks you to leave. As for the money spend on playing maimai: Usually arcade will take 6 coins for each round of play, But for how much a coin worth, that vary from arcade to arcade, and vary from package to package. Around 2018 ~ 2020, it's usually 1 CNY for 1 coin, and a package will provide little discount like 200 CNY for 250 coins, so a round of maimai would cost 5 ~ 6 CNY (~100 JPY) Recently, starting 2023, new arcades start a price war, they are selling their package in a surprisingly low price, 300 CNY for 1000 coins (0.3CNY per coin) or 1000 CNY for 4000 coins(0.25 CNY per coin), a round of maimai will only cost 1.5 ~ 1.8 CNY, 1/3 of the initial price. It's sooo cheap that many players go to new arcades now. In response to the price war old arcades are now lowering their price too. (Personally I prefer to go to one of the old arcades, they have fewer people, which means instead of waiting 3~4 pairs of player, usually I only have to wait 1 other pair before it's my turn, or sometimes after 6PM, I can start farming)
4:26 **thousand yard stare**
a light take but the "boy and girl together = dating" trope is so stupid ngl. this happens a lot in vtubers like hololive (mostly inside hololive bc male fans want to collab with their favorites instead of the girls collabing with their... uhh... *COWORKERS??* (bc hololive also have a male group called holostars and its underrated bc ew males eugh)) like you can mistake a boy and girl "couple" because who knows theyre actually related and if they were dating as relatives then that means they pull an alabama? which is _very_ unlikely people think that one heterosexual partners are lovers bc they keep thinking straight when they dont know about queer people existing like its just so random to assume that boy girl interactions = love couple this is real world guys, wake up from your dreams
Hey, I've been planning to move to Australia in the far future whenever I can for many reasons, sort of sucks how it's more expensive there but oh well, I suppose I'll deal with it. Really nice to know how it all is there, certainly didn't expect arcade rhythm games to be so popular to the point you have to take turns. Good to have the warning about costs, too, I'd think it's not that much but I suppose I'll have to actually be mindful of playing. Mainly wanted to play SDVX, but I suppose KSM will work for now and even in that future for just playing at home for fun like that. I'm really looking forward to playing arcade rhythm games in general actually, as in our country we have almost none of them, aside of Pump It Up, I guess that it'll only let me practice some games first on clones like, again, KSM for SDVX Also hey, another light theme Discord user, very glad to see someone else using it
I feel like in the states we dont have these issues, but it could be that i primary play dance games versus hand games Like im not an extraverted person in general, but I feel in the case for arcade socializing, even as a new player beginning to play Pump and looking up to experienced players it never felt that deep, like just have fun and talk

For me, the only issue when trying to talk to people in the arcade is that it is loud as heck. Whenever I talk to my friend, or anyone for the matter, I have to either yell or I have to speak directly into their ear. But I do often make eye contact with the other player. It’s kinda necessary, since it’s customary to determine who goes first in choosing the song (although it is typically the younger person).
One of the few interactions I had from an arcade was just me complementing someone doing master levels. I'm new to the game and seeing someone in their element. They know they're good at the game, but they didn't see the outstanding performance I just saw.
No good arcade with rhythm games near me but interesting to hear what it would be like. at anime con it’s super chill since most people are new and I had fun inviting random people in

Personally, I'd ask if there's a queue first, usually, that's an icebreaker enough and you ask after what songs people like to play, and if you're paired with someone by count you can ask if the queue is by pairs, or not and if you are paired, maybe ask what songs do they tend to play too. Saving for money... Just me, but when I went to a near-hiatus to save for a need, I realized how much I spent on maimai... Could've bought a game priced locally at 30$ today but nah... Here's my guide if you're in the Philippines (wow) since I am (and I'm desperate to rid myself of it): Most people are more than happy to accommodate new players, and if you are a complete beginner, there likely is one person who eases you into both the game and the local community. (I was introduced by two people, but a certain 15k player in my location was the one who really eased me in. I owe them a lot.) Be sure to ask about the queue, since the chance of players wanting to play in sync is usually higher than wanting to solo - often reserved for the hard grind. (Not to mention for DX cabs, a single credit costs a lot already if you base your income in our country, and getting to play 4 instead of 3 songs is already worth enough to play with someone else.) Players tend to be responsive towards the "any song suggestions" question and usually give you one of three things - a song they like to play, a song they think will match your skill level, or a troll pick like ones from the PANDORA BOXXX. All we do is done in good faith. Some branches have a dedicated queue list - be sure to check. And while at it, be sure to ask about anything you might need to know. Oh, and please, no PDA. It's fine to be and show you're in a relationship, just don't rub it in others' faces.

1:36 it's actually also a thing in vietnam (or at my local arcade at least). There are only 2 maimai cabs but there is a queueing board where you can write your name to queue. When you wanna do solo queueing, you just need to write [your name] (solo).
As someone who usually goes to arcade alone to play maimai, and just a casual player (lv 10 max), I somehow always meet a random sweaty gamer and get intimidated when playing with them lol (unless if they play with touch only)
THANK YOU FOR TELLING PEOLLE TO BRING DEODORANT U DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BAD ODOURS
Reasom people use moondrop because moondrop earphones are just good earphones and have a product for almost every price range (I love my moondrop blessing 3 they sound so fucming good)
bro has WAY too much social anxiety lol
Actually, in China, most arcades only include 1 maimai machine, 2 is rare, and any number greater than that is obscure. In my city, there is a Round 1, but it takes 2 hours to even get there, so I usually head to the nearer arcade even though it only has 1 maimai machine.
sometimes i would stay at the arcade for too long that i forget to eat 💀 thanks for reminding me to eat when i become hungry lmao
2:06 it because moondrop chu are CHEAP AS FUCKKKKKKKK

Bro just buy salnote zeros it sound better trust(also mate mostly arias coz people silly)
I can relate to this 100% of the time lol. I am a relatively new maimai player, I've been getting into the game for ~5 months now, and at the first day going to the arcade I felt so awkward since, obviously I knew nothing about the game as well as anybody there. But then, in my school, coincidentally a guy who plays maimai for quite a long time happens to get into the same English class as I do, and he is the reason I basically got into the game. What felt like a very awkward gesture to do became a comfortable thing everytime I go to the place now since he said to me to just walk up and write my nickname on the queuing board and just interact with a lot of people in the community to make more friends. Of course there are times I respect a person's privacy by just simply asking them to let myself play with (since there are only 2 cabs at the place) and that was all the experience I had to deal with for the past when playing maimai lol
Disappointed that "take regular showers" wasn't a piece of critical advice in here.
im in the philippines and some arcades have cheaper prices like 30pesos per play although it was always crowded everytime i went there
The only rhythm game arcade cabinets near me are all PIU, which isn't bad, but I wish we had access to sound voltex or maimai or taiko. Doesn't help that the closest PIU cabinet is an hour away by public transport :/
I wish I could take public transport to my nearest arcade...
Dang, I wish I've been to an arcade like that.

1:38 As a maimai player in china, all i want to say is that solo playing is unsual due to the limited amount of arcade😢
I wish my country had more rhythm arcade machines, i swear god i couldn't find more than some rare pump it up machines.
