Olivia Kuper Harris - winner of #PMJsearch2017 and now a regularly touring #PMJtour cast member - is back for a haunting jazz ballad cover of Bowie's "Life On Mars," filmed in the Speakeasy Room at PMJ Manor. Fun fact: this was the first PMJ video that made it into space.

This is one of the best covers of Life on Mars I ever heard. The genre is not important when you can send the message the original intended to convey. The air of uneasy strangeness with a tint of sadness was kept intact.

I played mouth trumpet after I first heard miles Davis when I wad 10. Drove my parents crazy, I could alternate each side with the ability to half step at will, drove my parents and siblings crazy. By high school I was really good and knew all of the Chicago tunes, drove my teachers crazy,, they would not let me audition for the band and it ruined my life until I took up the bag pipes, drove my wife crazy.

It's funny because Life On Mars was David Bowie's reaction to Frank Sinatra, who is obviously a big contender to this genre.
@rain_down_
4 жыл бұрын
Might be wrong, but I thought it was a reaction to Paul Anka winning the rights to the song Comme d'Habbitude, not Sinatra personally. Bowie loved jazz.
@jessica5497

Sorry not Frank Sinatra...Paul anka
@CallumChaney
4 жыл бұрын
In 1968, Bowie wrote the lyrics "Even a Fool Learns to Love", set to the music of a 1967 French song "Comme d'habitude", but Paul Anka bought the rights to the original French version and rewrote it into "My Way", the song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The success of the Anka version prompted Bowie to write "Life on Mars?" as a parody of Sinatra's recording. So a bit of both i guess
@NoirChat138

Great BBC tv series which I cannot get out of my head when I hear this song.....
Between the talent of the singer and musicians, the quality of the arrangement, and the surprisingly solid structure of the original song this was an amazing piece. If someone had told me this was a cover of an Edith Piaf song from the twenties I might have believed them.

And is life on mars !!!
Why does this feel like a fever dream?
Vocally, of the highest calibre
O.K.H is ridiculously talented. Why she's not bigger is beyond me...
It sounds like I was just sitting at the bar after a long day and the band starts up, the singer starts singing, and at first I listen halfheartedly, but then as the song goes on it captures my attention, and soon I get up and slowly make my way over to the stage, just dreamily listening to her voice as the rest of the world is drowned out. Then the song ends and I'm snapped out of my reverie.
This is probably still the best thing postmodern jukebox has ever done. It's perfect.
Folks get your tickets for Montreal in March it's going to be a big fiesta !!!!!!! I was begging for enjoying their live show ! Thank you pmj
I always come back to this video and keep thinking how a PMJ rendition of The Man Who Sold the World would look like. Not only a cover, but a VERSION because what PMJ does can't be called Cover, it is almost something entirely new and I always love it!
No matter who sings this, I still feel Bowie in the spirit of the song and my heart aches. It’s so bitter sweet. Makes me want to cry every time.
You all put the V into VINTAGE, VICTORIOUS, VIVACIOUS, VA-VA-VOOM (all due respect) Safe journeys, and much respect!!!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Scott Bradlee is a fucking genius for starting this. Everyone involved is just unbelievably talented

Bowie is still alive!!
You are in a league of your own with these covers.
This was like pure magic. The vocals, the instruments, the mouth trumpet... And one of my favorite Bowie songs. Thank you for blessing my ears
Man , Bowie' s tunes makes me really sad. Still can't get over it.
When I lamented the lack of decent music over the last 30 years, someone told me 'There is good music out there. Just don't look for it in the mainstream charts'. He was right and this is the proof.
I am crazy for this singer and I love this song. Olivia kuper Harris
Man, that was so good. I love it when you find a style that fits the music seemingly perfect. So that you forget that it sounds so different in the original. The song becomes fully independent.
I wonder if they would ever try to turn classical music into jazz... would that count as an updating rather than a backdating?
@toby7442

CaliburnCelt -- Vulfpeck incorporated the opening bars of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" into their song "Daddy Got a Tesla." 50 years ago a woman paid her way through college by converting one of Muzio Clemente's sonatinas into "Groovy Kind of Love" by the Mindbenders. Other examples include "Stranger in Paradise" (from a Borodin piece) and "Tonight We Love" (from Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto). Frank Vignola has done a jazz-samba piece based on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony also. There is also an Italian arranger who has converted Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" into a classical Bach fugue, which Chris Rupp later adapted from a long instrumental piece into a short a capella piece.

I remember the first time I heard this song- my life was lowkey a mess. My mom and dad were on the verge of separating. As my dad was living in Nashville for work and we still lived in Knoxville. So we only really saw he on the weekends. I was sitting alone in the car while my dad went into a smoke shop to pick something up and I just sat their a cried as I listened. I was 14 or so at the time and now at 20 I still tear up listening to this song
