In 1968, Bowie wrote the lyrics "Even a Fool Learns to Love", set to the music of a 1967 French song "Comme d'habitude", but Paul Anka bought the rights to the original French version and rewrote it into "My Way", the song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The success of the Anka version prompted Bowie to write "Life on Mars?" as a parody of Sinatra's recording. So a bit of both i guess

Man, that was so good. I love it when you find a style that fits the music seemingly perfect. So that you forget that it sounds so different in the original. The song becomes fully independent.

I wonder if they would ever try to turn classical music into jazz... would that count as an updating rather than a backdating?

I think jazz kind of already is that. But I mean if you mean covers of classical pieces then I'm thinking there is probably something like that out there as well.

If Beethoven's Fifth can make a decent disco track at least one classical staple should make a decent jazz tune.

CaliburnCelt -- Vulfpeck incorporated the opening bars of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" into their song "Daddy Got a Tesla." 50 years ago a woman paid her way through college by converting one of Muzio Clemente's sonatinas into "Groovy Kind of Love" by the Mindbenders. Other examples include "Stranger in Paradise" (from a Borodin piece) and "Tonight We Love" (from Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto). Frank Vignola has done a jazz-samba piece based on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony also. There is also an Italian arranger who has converted Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" into a classical Bach fugue, which Chris Rupp later adapted from a long instrumental piece into a short a capella piece.

I just love these interpretations of rock classics. I find that as I get older, I can no longer tolerate the headbanging exuberance of classic rock and roll. This is so much more mellow and suits me just fine. Thanks all you folks at PMJ.

I remember the first time I heard this song- my life was lowkey a mess. My mom and dad were on the verge of separating. As my dad was living in Nashville for work and we still lived in Knoxville. So we only really saw he on the weekends. I was sitting alone in the car while my dad went into a smoke shop to pick something up and I just sat their a cried as I listened. I was 14 or so at the time and now at 20 I still tear up listening to this song
