Life On Board HMS Ocean | Forces TV

This is the first time a Royal Navy ship like Ocean has been put in charge of a US Naval task force. Fully packed, Ocean's hanger can house 12 helicopters. For the Royal Navy it's been something of a proving ground.

HMS Ocean was only built with smaller life span of 20 years, and she was commissioned in 1998 so 2018 will be her 20th. I personally think that her life should be extended by 2 years out to 2020 when both of the QE class carriers will be in commission by then, and then place HMS Ocean in to reserve for 5 years until 2025. Ideally HMS Ocean should be replaced for a like for like vessel, but politicians doing it on the cheap will put her responsibility on to the QE class carriers, massively over the top for the role of an LPH, and would make them vulnerable having to get close a hostile coast to launch helicopters and boats.

If we kept this ship and built 2 more along side the two Queen Elizabeth class ships we would have a fleet as powerful as the one we had in the 60s just like when we had eagle and ark royal alongside Albion, bulwark and Hermes as commando carriers, we would still be a fleet to be reckoned with, they need to meet the 82,000 sailor milestone and build these bloody ships, replace the the 42s with a 1 for 1 parity in. Type 45s, a 1 for one parity with type 23s with type 26s and build the type 32s adding them to the fleet in the same numbers as the type 26s ordered, imagine a surface fleet like that along with the submarine fleet of astute class and dreadnought type subs!

Joe Dickson Do you know anything about hull life structures and stress conditions on them? Clearly not. HMS Ocean was built to civilian standards. While cruise ships are built to civilian standards, the amount of strain and pressure on the hull is no where near the same as a warship. Her refit a few years ago wasn’t meant to meant to fix hull life as that’s not possible, it was to extend her lifespan by another few years. You spoken or know/related to people who serve on Ocean then? Members of my family served on Ocean and know all about her. What you have said is wrong. Research it or go back to school or even speak to an engineer or seamans officer and they will correct you.
