Life on a Wolf River Raft plus Unbelievable Fishing!

Ойын-сауық

Lake Sturgeon run up the Wolf River in Wisconsin to spawn in late April. We were fishing for the early walleye run and sucker run in late March. Surprisingly, several mega huge lake sturgeon bit the half of a nightcrawler we had set out on bottom rigs.
After that, it was time for the fight of our lives.

Wow you got to fish on one of those rafts! Lucky! What a fun way to fish, just sit on the raft and watch the poles! The real fun comes at night when the fish are on their way down after spawning! Cane poles with a wolf river rig with the leader line being a Rapala is how they catch them on the way down.

Yeah. Tom was talking about that. They move the raft to deeper water and do that.

I had to make it clear that we weren't targeting them! I don't want to get in trouble when I wasn't trying to cause trouble, you know!

Wow I never knew that river held so many different species of suckers! The only two I'm familiar with is the white sucker and the red sucker. I think it's the white sucker that's most common on the Great Lakes and I used to catch (also net) them when they were on their spawning run in the rivers off the Bay of Green Bay, and a couple of times when I was young I remember my dad smoking them.

Looks like you guys had a great time! Is this like a rental type place or friends? It would be cool to find a little bunkhouse like that to rent for a weekend and fish with my sons

Good stuff T! I like how you handle the fish with care. Those may have been golden redhorse instead of silvers? Silvers have a convex edge to their dorsal fin?

  • @tiefsa

I had the people at Roughfish.com look at some of the pictures and they were saying the silver redhorse get more golden in color as they get older. I might have caught a golden with one of thme, though. We caught so many suckers, I bet one was golden. I'm not great at identifying them yet.

@@tiefsa Try counting the dorsal fin rays........if you come up with 20 or more then likely a silver. If less than 20 then they could be goldens?
