Life of Tibetan Buddhist nuns at Dolma Ling Nunnery near Dharamsala

A very special video made by the nuns at Dolma Ling Nunnery and Institute, located near Dharamsala, northern India. Dolma Ling Nunnery and Institute is a non-sectarian nunnery located in the Kangra valley near Dharamsala, northern India. Officially inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on December 8, 2005, the nunnery is fully funded by the Tibetan Nuns Project and was the first institute dedicated specifically to higher Buddhist education for Tibetan Buddhist nuns from all traditions.
Dolma Ling Nunnery is unique because it offers a 17-year curriculum of traditional Buddhist philosophy and debate as well as modern courses in Tibetan language, English, basic mathematics, and computer skills. The nuns also receive training in the ritual arts such as sand mandalas and butter sculpture. The nunnery was successfully completed after 12 years of hard work and the nuns themselves worked to help build the nunnery.
The Tibetan Nuns Project provides education and humanitarian aid to refugee nuns from Tibet and to nuns from the Himalayan regions of India. It provides facilities and programs to educate, empower, and improve the status of ordained Tibetan women.
The majority of nuns have endured great suffering to get to this hopeful situation.
The Tibetan Nuns Project is dedicated to:
-- Improving standards of food, sanitation, medical care, and education in Tibetan nunneries;
-- Working towards future self-sufficiency through educational and training opportunities;
-- Training nuns to take leadership and service roles within their communities
-- Improving the level and status of ordained Buddhist women;
-- Assisting recently arrived refugee nuns from Tibet;
-- Continuing to establish further facilities for Buddhist nuns.

    Please keep researching on Dharma and ask 10 directions Buddhas to lead you to the right monastery and teachers to help you get enlightenments. Your flowers will bloom once it has enough elements. Don’t worry. I pray that you can become a nun to help yourself and later in life to help others. Om Mani Pad Me Hum. You can chant this 108 times a day to get merits and send the message to all Buddhisatvas to assist you in your path. Om Mani Pad Me Hum

    With the pandemic, all the nunneries are closed to visitors to keep people safe. But here is some information from our website in response to frequently asked questions. There are no age limits and there is a guest house at Dolma Ling, but it is closed for now: 7. Can I study at one of the nunneries? Lay people can always join the nunnery and study in the nunnery as day students with no accommodation. If these students wish to have their meals from the nunnery kitchen, they can do so and pay for it directly at the nunnery. Foreign national nuns who study and stay in the nunnery pay a donation of US $35 or INR 2000 per month for their accommodations and food. Only nuns are provided with accommodation in the nunnery. 8. I am interested in becoming a nun, how do I do so? Those who wish to study Tibetan Philosophy will need an understanding of the Tibetan language. Studying at a local Tibetan Institute for a few months to a year proves beneficial for foreign nationals. Once the interviews have been conducted, nuns will provide a hair offering to a lama, start wearing robes and recite their vows.

    Dear Mona, Sorry for the delay in replying. Of course, with the pandemic, the situation at the nunneries is very different and they are all locked down now to keep everyone safe. Here is some information from our website with frequently asked questions: 7.

    What do they eat for their dinner? I did not see enough fresh food so far, only bread. You need greens, veggies & fruits. Bread, tofu & milk is not enough.
