Senninbari, the sacred Shinto belts with a thousand stitches, are good-luck amulets in Shintoism. Senninbari were often given to the kamikaze, and also sent in “comfort bags” to ordinary WW2 Japanese soldiers in the field. I noticed that in this video, there is no mention of senninbari or of the kamikaze pilots' ceremonial last drink of rice wine.

Additional points. If a Kamikaze made the flight but couldn't hit the target due to bad weather or cloud cover or mechanical problems he was allowed to return. The Japanese didn't want to "waste" the kamikaze. Now if you were the only one left or if you had returned 2-3-4 times that's another story... Pilots were giving a cup of sake to calm their nerves prior. Potentially other drugs as well so that they would not lose their nerve.

About the fueling up… In every retelling I’ve heard, they said they only put in enough fuel to get there, to help ensure the pilots couldn’t get cold feet and return. Knowing there wasn’t enough fuel to get back was was intentional, to encourage them to carry out the mission or alternatively, crash in the ocean and be seen as a coward. Which of those is true is probably hard to say, but as a tactic, it would be smarter to ensure the operation was successful by leaving the soldiers with no other option and have slightly less explosive power (which arguably could be made up with more bombs or other explosives), than it would be to have a bit more fire power but a higher failure rate.

Good video, but I would like to touch base on a couple of things. “Tarmac” isn’t an actual term, it’s just a misnomer. Instead probably say ‘ramp’ or ‘apron’ which are in fact actual terms. Aircraft did not (and still don’t) use gasoline, they use what is known as ‘Jet A1’ which is similar to Diesel but is much more flammable.

The life of a Kamikaze Pilot is usually a blast! I mean, they leave a lasting impression. A lot of people love them! They’re Da Bomb! The last thing through their minds tend to be their butts. They don’t generally walk away from their landings. Their favorite song is “Last Resort” specifically the opening of “cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort”. Their lives can be rather messy. You can only train them once.

I believe that no one should be forced to fight in a war if they are too scared to die and there is no dishonor in that. I also believe that if we were in a war and I was told to fly a plane into an enemy ship, then I would do it. For my country, friends, and family, I will give my life.

These poor people werent given a choice. Their lives over. Their fate seal. That's a sad situation and had to be mentally abd psychologically draining. And all of this for a War that they ultimately lost. Meaning these people died for absolutely no reason. They thought that their sacrifice would help secure a victory and make the world a better place for their loved ones but in reality, their sacrifice meant nothing besides keeping their family's honor intact.

You said in a previous episode about them that they didn't send eldest sons as it would end the family line therefore this story couldn't have happened as he was the only son because he was worried about leaving his mother all alone.
