LIFE OF A 2 YEAR OLD POLYGOT (Who Speaks 4 Languages)

#multilingual #child A video of Benjamin's daily language routine being immersed in hearing and speaking 4 languages. I hope this video brings a smile to your faces. Since the age of 11months old I (mama) have been speaking German with Benjamin and my husband Oscar speaks Spanish with him consistently.
The community language here in Kenya is English and Swahili. Benjamin (2 years and 10months old) is now able to understand all four languages fully.
He speaks mostly in English but we encourage him to respond to us in German, Spanish and Swahili depending on who is conversing with him at the time. Consistency and patience is the key here. We are grateful to be able to document his progress here on KZread and hopefully inspire others.

That's wonderful that you and your husband decided to start speaking with him in two different languages at 11 months of age. It's a great idea. It's incredible that he picked up all four! I wish the same for my kids. Heck I wish the same for me. I should start immersing myself in different languages on different days of the week.

We already see the benefits when we travel back home to Germany and Spain. He is able to understand everyone and doesn't feel like an outsider. He is also able to play with the local children here in Kenya because he understand Swahili. It truly is a blessing. Thank you

Thank you! Something I learnt is that all children are born with the ability to learn multiple languages fluently as long as they are presented consistently and from the age of 0-6 years old.

I'm curious I saw one of your old videos where your used Glenn Doman method to teach you kid to read. But latelly your are using different method. Why did you change your mind? Did you find Glenn Doman not effective?

Hello Igor. Thank you for your comment. Yes, I started doing the Glenn Doman method with my first son Benjamin but it didn't really work for us overtime. He still couldn't read despite many months of practice. After some research I learnt that it is more effective and more beneficial for a child to learn to read phonetically rather than through sight reading (because with sight reading they are memorizing the words whereas with phonetical understanding they are able to read most words). A child still learns some sight words because in the English language some words cannot be read phonetically but for the most part they are well grounded in reading and spelling with this method. Thank you and all the best.

@@dorothyshelton I am a native English speaker, and we use both phonetics and memorization because we have an immense amount of American English words that cannot be sounded out. As American English speakers we must continue to memorize the spelling of words although our lives because our spelling rules are not definite.
