Life Lessons from Dungeons and Dragons | Chrissy Profera | TEDxYoungstown

Dungeons and Dragons and other types of table top role playing games can create internal wellness and a safe space for people to form communities, practice social skills and increase their emotional wellness and ability by giving them a place to play with outcomes and situations. Chrissy Profera is a sophomore at Youngstown State University majoring in social work. But that doesn’t stop her from becoming a moving force in the field of alcohol and addiction where she is sought after in Eastern Ohio. Chrissy overcame her addictions herself and well understands the demise and destruction of lives due to this deadly disease. Miss Profera’s passion is best demonstrated in the creation of patient therapies utilizing fun and interactive interventions. This one of a kind therapeutic tool goes beyond conventional dependency treatment. The focus on her method involves dual diagnosis issues often over looked in many traditional recovery programs. Miss Profera presently works in the chemical dependency community at New Day Recovery. Upon graduation she will utilize her groundbreaking practices in a way that will help you become the hero of your own life story This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Beautiful talk. Collaborative storytelling and roleplaying with my fellow adventurers has been one of the most healing and empowering experiences of my life.

Not just one game - all forms of role-playing game can help, as long as they use imagination collaboratively. The games foster a sense of acceptance, so that, in the best groups, anything you try to be is encouraged and accepted as a valid choice. A good dungeon master will foster that attitude, and a great one will seek out ways to help their players explore their identities and face their demons in a safe and supportive atmosphere. But it's also a lot of fun :)

Magic is very tricky in the game as well as getting along or trying to charm other races.
