Life inside the Russian penal colony where Brittney Griner is serving nine years | USA TODAY

Brittney Griner, a U.S. basketball star, is serving her sentence at the IK-2 penal colony in Mordovia, about 350 miles southeast of Moscow.
RELATED: Brittney Griner’s appeal rejected by Moscow Regional Court judge bit.ly/3GZec8z
In August, the two-time Olympian and perennial WNBA All-Star was sentenced to nine years after pleading guilty to carrying hash oil in her luggage as she returned to Moscow to play with her Russian professional team. Griner, like many WNBA players, supplements her income by playing pro overseas during the WNBA’s offseason. She has played in Russia for nine years.
Griner lost her appeal and began transfer to the penal colony. During her transport, Griner’s legal team in Russia, as well as her U.S.-based agency, said they were not informed of her whereabouts. The Biden Administration - which has classified Griner as wrongfully detained and is trying to negotiate for her release - also was unaware of where Griner was.
In a statement, Griner’s agent Lindsay Colas said of Griner, "despite the fact she is alone and now nearing her ninth month in detention separated from her loved ones, she is trying to stay strong." Another wrongfully detained American, Paul Whelan, is also serving time in a penal colony in the Mordovia area. Whelan, who has been imprisoned in Russia since December 2018, is serving a 16-year sentence after being found guilty of espionage, a charge he and his family have repeatedly denied.

Honestly, I don't think it was ignorance. It was arrogance. From what I hear, Brittney was told ahead of time not to bring marijuana into Russia. She visited a controversial country during a war, where the United States is pocketing their enemy, yet she still chose to bring along an illegal substance as a somewhat high profile American. I have very tall friends with particular weaknesses from that. she can't lie back and rest every so often as we do. she will be overworked, especially for what she is accustomed to as a star athlete. it will be more difficult for her in there by not being a common Russian thief or prostitute. To those who object that the punishment doesn’t fit the crime, consider the punishment for illegal drug possession in Singapore: death. Just because hashish-oil infused vape canisters are legal in California doesn’t make them legal in Russia. Griner had a responsibility to inquire about the legality of drugs she planned to bring with her to Russia. She didn’t. Now she must pay the price.

In the N.E. US those are vape cartridges and we call them "carts". it's meant to be medicinal grade but recreational consumers like them too. I'm looking at one right now it's legal in my state, but you can't legally drive on it, just like with cannabis bud. and some jobs won't hire you with any THC in your system, it's only for the folks who have that all worked out.

Look I'm no fan of Griner's politics and I have a deep abiding mistrust of pretty much all the big media outlets that have made this story a big issue - but I still have much sympathy for the lady. Even as a long time cannabis user myseld I'll admit I think we in the west are waaaay too permissive about the drug culturally and I'm even amenable to more strict laws regarding it's distribution and use (and I think it's a disaster that it has become so normalized), and while Russia's got it's fair share or problems I honestly don't think the west is is any position to condemn them given our many faults, hell we could probably do well to learn a thing or two from how Russia's culture is developing because I think in many ways it's more positive than our own - but all that said, consider her situation on an individual level. It's tragic. It's also unjust And by the way, this is something that lays at the heart of westerners and western liberal values; we are somewhat unique from the rest of the world in that we place a very high premium on individual justice. We consider the plight of the individual in a culture or society and generally don't accept the idea that ends justify the means if those ends involve causing injustices for individual souls. It's part of our Christian heritage and I think it's important that we hold on to that - because as we become more communist and concerned with "social justice" (a concept anathema to the value system our civilization is built on), we become a people willing to sacrifice individuals and condemn them to injustices for so-called "greater good" reasons. Even people ostensibly on the right wing are doing this more, and I think we can see this in the way many of my fellow conservative-minded people speak about what's going on with Griner. I mean for goodness' sake; She's grown up in a culture where cannabis use is basically ubiquitous, there's hardly any stigma around it, and literally millions and millions of people in the US use it all the time. Now she's going to a brutal prison for a decade for being careless about it. Should she have been more careful? Sure. Should she get a handle on her cannabis habit? Yeah probably. Should she have informed herself about foreign laws regarding the smuggling of illegal drugs into their countries? Clearly. Is there an element of hubris and pride in her own status and celebrity that produced her sorry circumstance? Also yes. But does the woman deserve to be in a Maldovian penal colony, surrounded by criminals who don't speak her language, likely the target of ridicule and abuse, for nearly a decade? Hell no. Putting her dumb politics and the dumb politics of the media supporting her aside- I can't help but see her as a fellow American individual being unjustly treated for causes and reasons that have little to do with her as an individual. And that shit just. aint. right. We're Americans dammit - we're not supposed to be okay with that sort of thing. The confusionist Chinese, the life-is-cheap slavs, the homogenous Japanese or the top down order minded Singaporeans may think nothing of these sorts of tradgedies, maybe they even see it as justice - but we Western Judeo-Christian individual/family/community and freedom minded people are NOT supposed to be okay with that shit man. That is not our way. I honestly think it's terrible that people I generally align with politically and culturally seem to be celebrating and being mean spirited about this outcome for Griner. I think our government does have a duty to try their very best to spring their own citizens from crazy prison sentences in foreign countries for criminal charges that wouldn't even get said citizens arrested stateside. Only to an extent, obviously, but what do we have a government for if not to advocate forecefully for our damned people in strange foreign lands getting locked up in penal colonies for some bullshit??? I dunno man, it's sad. Everything about the situation is sad. Griner's own shortcomings and her inability to just cease her cannabis use for a short trip to Russia is sad, the reasons the media like this issue are sad (they hate Russia and love POC WNBA players - obviously if this was some white dude they'd just be celebrating the outcome, so they're very disengenuous about this), the outcome for Griner and her people is sad, the way many on the right are reacting to this story is sad... It's a sign of the times in a lot of ways.

@@SquareNoggin Since you wrote a book on this, you deserve some response. I feel for you and understand some of your opinions. There is no way to explain human nature. Luckily in the US, we can express our own ideas, but it is not wrong to have our own opinions. But as a society, we must have some standards. It used to be that we used religion as a good example to follow. The US was founded upon Christian-Judeo beliefs, but now Americans don't follow that anymore. They follower influencers and bloggers. We used to follow family and cultural tradition...we've lost that. So now we basically have agreed to follow laws that we have voted on. What laws do you want to make stricter for marijuana? If you are concerned about the plight of the individual, ask yourself, what are you doing about it. Have you even looked to see who is in other country's prisons such as Mexico or Iran? What have you done before this BG incident about people such as Paul Whelan? What have you done for those who have trampled upon, like the Native American? Are you fighting to get their properties returned to them? Sure, talk is cheap. BG got herself into this mess. Why go live and work for a country that is basically anti-gay, anti-black, and anti-woman? Why did she support this? Then she acts all surprised when she finds out their drug laws...believe me, after 4 years, any drug addict knows the laws. What this boils down to is Karma. You live on the edge, it eventually catches up to you. I personally hope she is safe, finds strength in her self, and gets through this. I hope that after she is rehabbed off her addiction that she stays off of it in when she returns. Even the WNBA has rules against drug use....she should listen to those who know better.

Any kind of rebellion will not be tolerated in the penal colony. Also, it is not wise to hop, jump, or run as she was so used to as a basketball star. It is important that she gets up very early and does an excellent job as a seamstress and cleaner in the penal colony. She must become a model prisoner. Both times i got caught with weed i was out within 8 hours on bond. Went to court for it a month later and just paid a small $200 fine 🙄. What your saying is just simply not true. I've known guys that got caught with 15-50 lbs of weed and they were out on bond within a week. The only way you're getting 9 years in Texas is if they catch you with like 100+ pounds. No one in Texas has ever done 9 years over a vape pen or a gram of weed. You're just making stuff up.

They are obviously drug dealers. If they gave them life it's probably because they've been caught many times before. They were probably on parole and got it revoked for a worse crime. I've known guys that got 25 years and got paroled in 8. Then they piss dirty for a UA and have to go back to finish the 17 years all over a dirty UA. These people your talking about weren't the casual weed smoker. They were interstate drug dealers and were more than likely on parole. No first time criminal is getting 9 years for weed. Not even a second time criminal. You have to be a drug dealer to get that kinda time which the people your talking about sound like they match the drug dealing type. Brittany got caught with .7 of a gram. Not even a gram. The people your talking about got caught with 500 grams of vape oil and almost 1350 grams of weed. You can't compare 1850 grams to 1 gram. Anyone that gets caught with 1 gram in Texas is getting out within 8 hours on a simple $150 bail bond. They aren't getting 9 years. Drug dealers are.

Inmates work for pennies an hour, but can get a few basics at the canteen. Most of the inmates do not work. Any prison is set up that way, as a deterrent, a place one doesn't want to go to. Your liberties are stripped. Of course we all feel bad for BG, but she is the one who made the moves that got her in this predicament. She admitted to breaking Russian laws and now she must face the consequences. She chose to disrespect the US, while working for the Russians knowing full well her status as a gay black person. I hope she learns to endure her discipline and come back to the US fully free of her addictions and see the beauty of our country. She took it for granted. Hopefully people will start to respect what we have going on because our country isn't nearly as bad as the rest of the countries we can move ahead with great things but you all decide to bicker who's better who's worse you did that they did that I didn't do it he did it it's all blame them do this do that just be yourselves and work hard make yourself money and our country we can all move together if we all work together. We have history so we can learn from it build from it invent from it innovate from it. But when people are acting dumb like this like this who situation could've been avoided but. This is like knowing speeding is illegal and speeding past a cop doing radar at 120 in the town area not even the highway that's asking to be arrested. like you know the act of speeding is wrong you know there's consequences yet you still did it so you learn from your mistake America is way better off having you here then you over there we don't really need you but just learn from this and don't do it again plain and simple

I'm just watching everyone take Russia side because she stands for something. Funny how evil people are when a person has their own opinion. I'm quite sure she didn't know she would get that type of time for a vape pin.

But those opinions should fit the norm of the society. As a society we agree to follow those norms for the good of the society. Going against those norms tends to make one an outlier. Outliers usually don't get the same cozy support.
