Life Force & World Class Track Meet retrospective: Vic boss | NES Works

Ойындар

We have a follow-up to a 1986 classic here, in deed if not in name: Life Force, the sequel to Konami's Gradius. Well, sort of. It's complicated. But since we never saw the actual Gradius II on NES, this will have to do.
Life Force makes use of the same excellent power-up system as Gradius, with some refinements, including a new weapon option, new handling of Options, a revamped shield, and perhaps most importantly a far more forgiving respawn system upon the player's inevitable demise. Along with these improvements, Life Force also incorporates two-player simultaneous action and introduces a unique dual-format scrolling system seen nowhere else in the Gradius series. It's quality fare, and a real technical and gameplay highlight for the NES... a feat that becomes all the more impressive when you consider how it had to be scaled back from the Famicom release to work within the constraints of U.S. cartridges.
Video Works is funded via Patreon ( / gamespite ) - support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its KZread debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more!
Production notes:
- NES and Famicom footage in this episode was captured from ‪@analogueinc‬ Nt / Nt Mini / Nt Mini Noir via RGB out.
- Standard definition video upscaled to 720 with xRGB Mini Framemeister and ‪@retrotink339‬ 5X. There is a small amount of visual distortion in certain vertically scrolling sequences that the latest Retro Tink firmware update appears to address.

Life Force was literally one of the very first games we got for our NES back in the late 80's, along with The Legend of Zelda and the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt pack-in. It was easily our most played game as a family, not just because it was the only two-player simultaneous game we had at the time but largely due to the fact that it was so good. And still is! In recent years I've introduced Life Force to my kids as well as my nephew. No one wants to stop playing. The graphics are dated, but they're still so visually interesting that you can't help but pay attention. And the music comprises one of the best start to finish NES soundtracks around. I want to say your video "takes me back," but I seriously never left.

I unintentionally ended up with 4 versions of Salamander/Life Force lol. Of course my old copy on the NES and I got PC Engine Salamander about 15 years ago. Then I discovered Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus for Sega Saturn about 5 years ago and it comes with arcade ports of Life Force and Salamander which I was unaware of at the time of purchase because it was sold to me simply as Salamander 2. Strangely enough I can't decide which version I like best. I mostly play the PC Engine/NES versions but each version is really good and if you own only one you're just fine.

Road Fighter and Devil World never released in America to begin with (the latter because NoA said no), and Bomberman won’t show up on the American NES until January 1989, when the NES Satellite peripheral shipped. In any case, Devil World was already covered in NES Works GAIDEN as part of the Famicom’s 1984 line-up, and for Bomberman you have to wait until NES Works proper gets to it in like… no more than 40 episodes. About a decade ago, I picked up a copy of Salamander on the PC Engine, and learned about the weird dual history you spoke about between it and Life Force. Scaled back or not, I think the NES version is still very solid, and if anything it gives me something to look forward to when I eventually get around to trying the Famicom version. Another quick note - only two versions of Salamander/Life Force send you back to a checkpoint in single player: the MSX and PC Engine versions. The arcade versions - all three of them - work just like the NES game here in terms of immediate respawning to continue play in single player. Salamander for MSX was a completely different game so that makes sense, but I have no clue why they left a checkpoint system in the otherwise very arcade accurate PC Engine version.

If I didn't know better, I'd think Konami's marketing teams were intentionally conspiring to make this as obnoxious to keep track of as possible xD It really is amazing that they accomplished the NES version of Life Force on a standard chipset. You could call it a miracle... a Bio Miracle ;D

One weird quirk about Life Force: if you have a NES Advantage controller and try using its so called 'Slow Motion' feature Life Force's horizontal stages will go completely haywire. The background tiles will start to be drawn in wrong. Causing a chaotic, often unplayable, mess of mismatched walls. Since the bosses are made from background tiles the slow motion will deform them too.

My Life Force cartridge was broken - the first boss was immortal. Probably a piracy prevention mechanic triggered on games pirated into the Polish market. Regardless, I had great time with it and still remember it to this day. I was also more than happy to play it later on a multicart which allowed skipping levels.

Back in the 90s Poland had only a pirated version of NES called Pegasus and cartridges were available in stores and flea markets - but no original NES. Some games had anti-piracy protection, e.g. Robocop 3, a romhack of Shatterhand, in which a boss at the end of the elevator stage was immortal.

The Gradius series generally makes the game harder when you cash in on the power-ups. So dying doesn't necessarily mean you're screwed. Trust me on this - I don't have the reflexes to beat the games without losing all my power-ups a thousand times or so.
