Life at the Bottom: The Worldview That Makes the Underclass

Where does the underclass come from? Poor economic conditions and a lack of opportunity, says the left. It's the incentives of the welfare state, says the right. The correct answer is more subtle, says today's guest. Subscribe to the Tom Woods Show: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

Wow, this was very powerful. The section around 22:00 about people feeling they have to pretend they have no agency in order to keep their victim position going is among the saddest things I have ever heard... and so true. The focus on misconception being the root of so much suffering is something I entirely agree with.

I love it when an American pronounces "Birmingham" as "Ber-ming-ham" it's pronounces kinda like "Ber-ming-um"! (Depends on accent and dialiect of course!)

For those interested in such things, there's a movie called "Nil By Mouth" that's about this underclass Dalrymple talks about.

I'm a huge leftist but must admit that I have no idea what to do about people who are hard up, are given help, and then proceed to utterly squander the help they're given.

Hello chief, I'm a survivor of unimaginable violence, and I started at the bottom of society, the solution is to relentlessly read/watch stories about people who have started with nothing but who have dragged themselves up to success... Up From Slavery by Booker T Washington is probably the best starting point...

They're the people most disillusioned with the world for whatever physical disorders, traumatic, or generational shit or what have you. Deeper, more complex underlying issues. I think it's fascinating to be honest, not every person is going to fit into society, you hear it in drill music and I think we have to understand it more deeper, maybe it'll help us understand all of us somehow
