What many don’t realize is the conflicting qualities make a great FA. (I was a FA for United, decades ago, and I hated it.) Anyway, a FA must have, when needed, a commanding presence. Your FA is there to ensure the safety of the passengers and fellow crew members. In the event of an emergency, a FA must command - through voice and body language - actions of the passengers. Stopping to get your personal effects during an emergency evacuation? Hell no. Intimidating crew or fellow passengers? Also, hell no. Now, take that same employee and provide effortless, genuine, empathetic service…that’s a challenge. Delta mostly gets this right and that’s a big “thank you”to the recruiters and the trainers. Keep the good ones. Recognize their exceptionalism early and actually see them. Reward them. Retain them. Recognize too that sometimes the employee isn’t right for their current role at Delta. Act swiftly on that assessment. My last observation: When I am on a long-haul flight in Delta One, DO NOT SERVE MY MEAL LIKE I AM AT A GODDAMN CAFETERIA. Appetizer first. Then serve my main course. I will get off my soapbox now…
