Since this video was filmed, Tara has had the all-clear from her vet to get back on board. Her and Bourbon have planned a visit from her saddler and will be back on board in a week! ✨

How wonderful and what a positive person Tara is about the whole situation and so dedicated to her gorgeous boy. Its lovely to see that not always is a diagnosis the end of a career and I would love to see her riding when and if she would allow you to share. Well done to them both xx

Thank you for sharing this vlog Rhi. I am feeling emotional but in awe of Tara and Bourbon ❤ He is a stunning horse and Tara herself is a strong and kind person making Bourbon's life kinder and pain free. Tara sounds like she has a fantastic team behind her of family, vets, farrier, physio, yard manager everyone wanting the absolute best outcome for Bourbon ❤ Great news to read that she has had the all clear. I know I would love to see her riding him possibly with yourself and Woody out on a gentle hack? Or just a sneak peak of them together? Thank you to yourself and Tara for sharing this emotional, brave journey. I had never heard of kissing spine disease.

Thank you Mellie - it was an emotional one to film! And yes, it is certainly my intention for Woody and I to escort Bourbon and Tara on a gentle hack ... to the pub! For a little celebration. I will film it if I can ❤️

It's encouraging to see successful rehabilitation stories. My horse has a sacroiliac problem. The hardest thing is finding the right experts.

Yaay Tara - for being such a good, caring owner! You two are building such a trust bond. A LOT of Kissing Spine starts early on, from: 1) starting a horse too young, well before 4 yrs. old. 2) too heavy a rider on a horse's spine - 20% Rule, people! & 3) too much & too early jumping. Improper saddle fit only accelerates & exacerbates this developing, painful condition. Such an important topic that is only recently getting attention. Wow - the surgery has come a looong way & is far less invasive. **Carrot stretches & saying 'head down' at trot & over cavalettes is so good for building your horse's top line. PS: Tara - so happy he ended up in your hands! He's a lucky, lucky boy!

Tara seems so caring and even though her dreams initially seemed on hold she never blamed Bourbon, he really has had the best care and is so lucky to have ended up with her, I really hope the rehab continues to go well and all her hopes for him are realised, she certainly deserves it!! 🤗

She absolutely does!

My horse was given to me a year a go and he came in a pretty bad shape: anemia, asthma, severe topline atrophy, ulcers, overloaded front left with wider hoof, IS stiffness, lumbar kyphosis....a train wreck of a horse, but a heart of gold. So...it took me a while to find a team of good professionals (none of them ended up being from my area😅), the farrier, the vet and the physio are all in contact with each other and now, after a year Dash is showing some good improvement. I still can't ride him becuse he is not strong enough, but we will get there. So, I can understand how difficult it is when you can't ride because the horse can't cope with it at this point, but when you see them getting better and you helping them and supporting them along the way...this makes the wait easier and when the time comes to get back in the saddle (correctly fitted one!!!) the ride will be all the more special...for the both. Keep up the good work Tara and your kindness and patience with him will be well rewarded🥰

@@majapoljak2023 - Truly gives new meaning to the word "gift horse!" On a serious note: You should be proud of your work to help Dash become his best self. I imagine the Ulcer treatments alone, were a god-send to him. Have you noticed a big change in his personality as he becomes less in pain? Have you noticed his trust in you grow? Even though you can't ride, as frustrating as that is with a new horse - what has been the most rewarding parts in your relationship with Dash over these looong months? I agree with the tortoise analogy. 🐢🐢🐢

Sharing challenging issues can give hope to people going through similar situations . As you say every story is different but Tara,s emotional story will resonate with so many other owners and gives such a positive outlook. Well done both for sharing such an emotional story

Very informative video and so nice to see a positive story like this one. I have also had a lot of health issues with my horse that I have bought a year ago and it was really tough but we are now seeing the other end of the tunnel and it is a great feeling to know that we didn't give up and that he is now a much happier and healthier horse. I got him vetted when buying him, but the vet didn't see his issues back then (and I don't blame him or the previous owner at all, as his symptoms were never very pronounced). I wish you all the best with bourbon and I hope that you get to make all of your plans and dreams come true with him !

This is a really lovely watch, just had the news that my Welsh D has impingement of one vertebrae and he will be going for surgery in the next month or two. This has given me hope!

I've heard about it. I hope he'll make a full recovery. You've explained it very well.

My horse legs had kissing spine and his owner before his last didn’t get it checked. However the girl who had him before me had the op done put in the work and eventually got him back into work. He is now in tip top shape and we are now cross country schooling. He’s my first horse and he’s so kind and forgiving the best thing that ever happend to me. I’m so thankful to the girl who had him before me and put the time and effort in and didn’t give up x

This is lovely ! I've heard others say that the rehab stage is crucial: take it slow and get it right and you have a solid horse for the long term.

Thanks for sharing. My beautiful boy was diagnosed with kissing spine 18months after I bought him (with a 5 stage vetting) and 1 month after I cancelled his insurance. He has kissing spine in his lumbar region, one gap at base of Whithers and arthritis of the lumbar facet joints. We tried injecting all areas but after a second injection and total of 6month rehab he got Center line pain again and his maintenance was challenging. Hoping to do the ligament snip surgery soon however we don’t know how much of his pain is also coming from the facet joints. Thanks for giving hope! Helps so much!

Best of luck to you both. Hang in there, you are doing your horse such a kindness. I have chronic pain + from a neck injury - so, I can't imagine having a rider on me while in a pain flare. Your horse will trust & love you for helping him.

my friends horse has recently come back into work after 10 months of rehab from kissing spine surgery! she’s doing great now :) i hope all is well with tara and bourbon!!

One of the best peices of advice I've gotten is do Back Xrays during your PPE because you are hearing so many horses of kissing spine. That said you never know as stated you might not see it.

A girl at my yard, well her horse had kissing spine and had surgery. However before that they injected his stifle thinking it was that. However is was one of the worst kissing spine they have seen in years. His Rehab was meant to only take 3 months howver its gone on since augaust 2020 and they have still not been able to jump. so happy for Tara for the all clear x!

@ Risque - 🙏 the owner won't rush the rehab & puts in the grueling work. If she rushes it, esp. jumping, it will all be for naught.

There is. Unfortunately, the first surgery didn’t work the way that they had hoped once the nerves started to return, so they ended up doing the surgery again. It was much more successful the second time, but they found additional complications that made rehab impossible at the time. Tara opted to just give Bourbon some time off and away from the vets. He’s currently turned away at a lovely retirement livery - she has originally planned to try to bring him back into work after 6 months or so, but, she has also said that she knows he may not come sound and that it may not be just a holiday, but full retirement ❤️

I don't know if this is too personal but - would we be able to find out how much the surgery cost? For someone who has to compromise to own horses, it would be great to know what this sort of thing would set me back.

I imagine several thousand pounds, but that's not taking into account the location, type of surgery, any complications and your insurance perimeters (eg. What it covers / how much your excess is)
