We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I lost my best friend 2 years and 2 days after this video was posted. I am an atheist, but I can tell you that I never wanted more to believe in an after life as I do now that he's dead. The devastating truth is though that my friend is sadly a mere pile of ashes buried in a tackle box and I will never see him again. I still visit his grave and talk as though he was there. I still vainly wish I could see him again.

I cease to exist every night after I stop dreaming and before I start dreaming again. Time ceases to exist. I could not tell the difference between a second and a million years. I find it comforting that I will no longer feel pain and have no concept of time, just like before I was born. One morning I will fail to wake up, but comfortingly, will not know it.

@Bob Smith NDE brings up a lot of problems for Theists. First of all : It is quite common that religious persons have NDE with symbolism out of their peticular religion. Not of one special kind of "Visions" (like for example every one sees Jesus). No, muslims see islamic symbolism, Christians stuff that comes from their believes and so on with every other religion. So, if every believer in a god of a kind, which one is right. 2nd : You can reproduce similar "NDE experiences" under clinical conditions without the danger of death, it is mostly misfiring in the brain and a shortage of oxygen. Interesting enough is the case that Atheists see "the Tunnel", Light and have similar Feelings in NDEs, but rarely any religious Symbolism. And if, than they are Symbols of their former belief. That leads me (and other Atheists) to the asumption that NDEs are nothing more than signs of a malfunctioning brain filled with stuff the person believes or read about.

@7458 As an atheist, I dont believe heaven and hell exists, no "afterlife" no "reincarnation". However I do believe that since my consciousness arised from nothing (since atoms and particles don't have underlying consciousness) that once I pass, it is only logical that "eternal oblivion" is not the end. Perhaps for your identity/EGO, but for experience of consciousness? I dont think so. "After you die will be like before you were born" already entails that there isn't eternal non-experience.

@@tedgrant2 I want to call you out on some dishonesty: You quoted a verse that said _“If any woman come to me and hate not her father and mother and husband and children and brethren and sisters, yea, and her own life also, she cannot be my disciple.”_ There is no such verse in the Bible. I don’t know what ignorant website you are pulling your alleged Bible contradictions, but the correct verse is: *_“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”_* [Matthew 14:26]. In biblical times the word "hate" did not mean intense passionate dislike for someone. It meant to organize one's priorities. It's like when you are going into battle in a war, you cannot be thinking of your father or mother or children, you have to be thinking of the task at hand. In the real scripture you tried to quote Jesus was ready to lead his disciples into a journey that would be dangerous because many people were against Jesus and he wanted them to be focused on their task, to be ready... You have yet to find ONE alleged contradiction that I haven’t been able to debunk. If I have missed any bit of scripture you have tossed my way, please let me know, and I’ll be glad to debunk your claims.

What is more frightening than any other is the word ETERNITY. It doesn't matter whether you go to heaven or to hell. After an amount of time in heaven, you will all know what is to be known and even heaven will become hell. And what's the amount of time, we still have to stay in h.? It's still for ETERNITY. Even if our universe will end, we didn't do the half! Eternity is boring, especially when it comes to the end. The movie "Zardoz" shows what may happen in a society that could not die. SCARY.

@@tedgrant2 You should ask this on a theist website. I 'm rather sure not even all Christians believe this. The writer of the Paul epistles surely didn't. And the minority (?) that does, will assume an all mighty god able to recompose a body to live in; or to take care of the former to be used again. No one knows how he bodily was supposed to look like anyway, early christian writers didn't care to talk about it, but we might assume a wise god will respect christian iconography if it would decide to repeat the act. Not many Christians puzzle about how water turned on the spot into wine, or how god does anything. It's god, so.

A transistor radio without the spark of energy to make it function is as dead as we will be when the time comes yet the radio is designed to transmit and receive signals. The radio can break down in operation, move to wrong channels, wires or other components break but the spark of energy ie the battery still functions. remove the battery the radio is now dead. bury it, cremate or whatever then place that battery in another radio of similar construction and it kicks in to operation. Yes the battery can be removed and measured as it is tangible unlike the soul. This is how I see the soul, as the battery of life that will reincarnate in another of similar construct. Can I prove it no, is it probable, no, is it possible, yes.

The basic characteristic of consciousness or spirit is that whatever it may act upon will always have a reason, even if an action doesn't seem to have any subjective reason, then also an existantial or emotional reason would be there for its action. Because it works out of intention. Thats its characteristics. So despite memory and tendencies being alterable, the consciousness and its intention or reason to be here cannot disappear, and clearly all awareness simply looks for expansion, this is apparent from nature. Therefore, even if you try altering it, the same consciousness will again attenpt in building memories and tendencies until its goal is fulfilled, which lies in the acceptence of existantial reality and its own desire to expand its awareness to it. Otherwise, whatever alteration one attempts, it will only give temporary relief until reality at some point hits its characteristics. Life converted into action brings reason and intention of some sort existantially

Its absolute bullshit. Because when there are two twins looking the same, what do you base that on as seperate people? Activities? Characteristics? Or forms? Its the qualities. If two water looks similar in appearence of sense perception yet one is of salt and another is of fresh, the difference again lies in quality. A fire does not get its identity by the form, it gets so by the heat it produces. Thats the quality. An awareness is a quality. It is not subject to sense perception. What do you mean by "removing your brain alters your memory?" Thats like saying that if you close your eyes then the sun doesn't exist. Reality doesn't work like that, if everyone removes their brain, then the concern of god or anything would not have even come. Its like saying, the curd was milk and the butter was curd before that so now we should consider the butter to be the milk. Thats absolute deception. Qualities of reality is not subject nor prejudiced to your alteration, you are subject to its ways. How can you be so sure that brain is awareness? Thats only in your appearence of sense perception. Can you be so sure awareness gets affected because of brain? Thats one crappy reasoning. Like saying the water disappears and ceases to exist when it is exposed to heat. Thats just a conversion of forma, not ceasation of forms. So error again. Just because the memory appears to have altered on physicality does not diminish the possibility that it ceases to exist nor does it mean to say it is not affected by your actions. This universe is very much conscious, it cannot avoid giving one the karmic results because its cyclical by nature, you imprint an action with emotions attached to it (which every life can and does) and without a doubt it comes back to you at some point, irrelevent of whether your intellect grasps it or not because cyclical movement in physicality is very real and whatever that acts here, including awareness is bound to receive it because its actions and emotions are imprinted in every second of its existence so you saying soul is non existent is equal to saying your awareness and its qualities do not exist. Which would be false and robotical. Brain is just a flesh on head, which appears to be of importance physically under sense perception. But the quality of being aware of awareness already diminishes intellectual perception because whatever it says as correct appears to be correct only under its own scope. If I were to interpret reasoning as a quality which is not limited to body in current reality without alteration. Then its realisable that mind is existence itself. So one would say to believe in intellectual sense perception exactly as it appears to be is like criminal standing in a court saying everything he says is correct and without guilt, without an outside evidence when under suspiscion

If brains can host multiple personalities, which the history if mental health evidences they can, + if souls are not implanted by God, but are a particle hosted by complex matter including living matter, so that multiple souls are already present before they acquire a brain-embodiment, then there is an explanation consistent with souls.

@@conscienceaginBlackadder You didn't demonstrate the soul is possible, you proposed the soul to be a particle. This is not a demonstration of existence nor even a demonstration of possibility. You have no basis for this idea, It's nothing but empty speculation. And again, Matt isn't saying this is the correct answer, not that it's proven, not that there are no other possibilities, but that the evidence supports this conclusion. That's it.

Ecclesiastes 9 New International Version (NIV) A Common Destiny for All 9 So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them. 2 All share a common destiny-the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[a] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, so with the sinful; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them. 3 This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. 4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[b]-even a live dog is better off than a dead lion! 5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten. 6 Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun. 7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun-all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. 11 I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. 12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them. Wisdom Better Than Folly 13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded. 17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.
