THE HISTORY OF JESOLO
In Roman times the lagoon extended over the area now occupied by the town. There were several islands in the lagoon, the biggest of which was known as Equilium, "the place of horses". It is thought that Jesolo represents a corruption of this name. Equilium became of particular importance as it has given origin to Jesolo as we now know it; as time passed, Equilium had seen the birth of modern civilization with the first human settlements in the area and the rapid growth of built-up areas with bridges, roads and all those elements that identify with the birth of a new civilization. The increase in population had to be accredited to the Barbarian invasions which obliged most of the population at the time living in the hinterland to migrate to these parts of the Venetian Lagoon. In only a few centuries Jesolo had developed into a true outpost for naval traffic and, thanks to its vicinity with Venice, it experienced an increment of influx of people and florishing markets. The SERENISSIMA REPUBLIC OF VENICE was instrumental to the growth of all the surrounding areas. In more recent years we can talk about the birth of Jesolo as a tourist destination, especially for holidaying and maritime tourism. From the 30s we see the creation of the first hotels alongside the first bathing establishments on Jesolo's coast. From then on we get to today's continual enterprising innovations and improvements. In the last ten years, thanks to the increase of demand in the tourism sector, Jesolo has undergone an exponential growth in apartments and holiday homes which satisfies disparate demands, making Jesolo a national and international hot-spot.
