Today's lick is a sequence of fast, descending arpeggios based on the E Aeolian mode (E F♯ G A B C D) and performed in a deliberate two-notes-per-string pattern. I use strict alternate picking throughout the entire lick, beginning on a downstroke.
When playing licks or melodies using two notes per string, many guitarists rely almost exclusively on their fret-hand ring and index fingers, even though the pinkie can more easily and comfortably reach most wide-interval stretches. If you find you're consistently shunning your pinkie during solos, I encourage you to follow my example and advice and practice this lick using your pinkie for the wide-interval stretch at the beginning of each arpeggio. You'll receive a great pinkie workout, after which you may begin to find yourself more at ease and sure-fingered when performing other licks incorporating wide-interval stretches.
Fingering prompts in the notation illustrate my specific fret-hand fingerings.
The tempo is 140 beats per minute, 69 for slow practice.

Or this is how you make yourself deep depression
even john's voice has its own built in heavenly stereo reverb. just listen to that contrast when he appears
If this guy had been born in the renaissance, I wonder what kind of lute licks he'd put down
They had to slow it down because he couldn't play slow anymore

Ryan Lawrence Actually I think it is better to slow down the fast version. That way we can see his technique unchanged. During slow demos, guitar players tend to exagerate their picking movements movements which is useless to watch since you won't achieve high speed playing that way. (notice when John plays slow in real time at 1:38. His movements are exagerated).

agree. I hate when they exagerate so much haha
@royalcat10

I don't think it's really an intentional exaggeration. One of the most common ways guitar players learn to increase their speed, is to not move faster per se, but to just decrease unnecessary and inefficient movements. Obviously, this can work in reverse as well. If you add in further, or bigger, picking movements and motions, you're going to slow down. These "exaggerations" are more of a way that he subconciously uses to play in time at slower speeds, than as some sort of flourish.

One of the best exercises for "building" a steady right hand!
Out of petrucci's first sentence I think I understood the word "monster" and thats it. I'm just a lowly beginner guitar player. Half of the stuff he talks about I don't understand, but its so awesome I watch anyway
Many people can shred, just surf you tube, but the pro's like Petrucci, Vai and Gilbert play so fricken clean it's amazing.
Even though I wish he'd play it again slowly, it's still pretty amazing to hera how precise he is when you slow it down
0:49 that's how John Petrucci enters every room, with a Godly ray of light
0:49 "Hi, This is John Petrucci from Dream Theater... Monster"
wow... not hard to do the arpeggios but very hard to alternate the patterns at the speed he does... I will continue to practice
I'd have to agree on that one. Yngwie's picking, and playing generally is so chill and confident
hahahahha man, you are totally correct. haha
His tone is great
what a class :) , another rock discipline's dvd!!!!

cool! thanks for this!
very good
I could play every day, all day, for the next 50 years.. And still never be able to play like John can.
thank you
1:11 - slow it down to 0.25

@ESPGuitarMaster Are you trying to say E mixolydian?
God damn I love this man.
@Element115fl Whats showy about this? JP is honestly a very humble guitarist in his own right. He is not trying to show off, this lick is not even a fast lick by JP's standards. Honestly grow up, hell don't even comment if you can't tell the difference between "showing off" and playing a lick with anything thats faster than Smoke on the Water.
Listen to this guy. This guy is the real deal.
@ESPGuitarMaster Oh, I see what you're saying. I guess the mixolydian scale wouldn't work. It's a major seven arpeggio there!
Interesting playing
write it yourself, he's telling you exactly what to play
so amazing, very entertaining. God I love you John #sigh
When John Petrucci is asked to slow something down, he slows the world down with him.
thanks
I love lamp
@shishir16089 If you count the actual 4/4 rythm with it you will hear that none of the notes are actually on the 1, 2, 3, or 4 but instead are on the "and' or something else inbetween the any of the 4 beats of the measure
@shishir16089 It means that the strong beats are in odd places in the measure
'Now here's John Petrooshi with today's lick'
Interesting... if you look closely at the first fret inlay, you'll notice it's a JPX. However, the toggle switch and the chrome hardware would suggest it's a JPXI.

nice
@apophis135 ya i can figur it now thanks
Hey dude, you're learning fast lol kiddn' That`s a great idea to aplly tetrads!! \,,/
@hjalmarBuoi KWS' Stevie Ray lick was slowed down
This is 2022- still working on this
@KillswitchEngage42 I'm just saying what John Petrucci had said, but yes, an E Mixolydian Scale works as well.
His playing is just so clean, it's amazing.
@Flash447 thanks!
@zerototalchaos thanks ...
nice,i can put this lick in my soloing.
Ugh I can get this at 100 bpm but not 140. How do I up the speed? It just gets too sloppy especially the last run where the pick slant goes away
@TheRoboticRabbit Congrats!
PURE GOLD!!!!!!!!!! After the 0:48
Try playing this in d standard it sounds amazing
@SorryArchitect nope, this is a petrucci BFR. take a look at the 12th fret.
cooooool...........
anyone got a tab for this?
What's the brand of the guitar?
yeah..but can u play Wonderwall..🙏
alternate picking a two-note per string pattern?! Petrucci truly is god!
@KINGOFKINGS611 An E-7th scale.
Whats that last scale called ?
how does he hold the guitar like ? I hold it with the carving on my right leg
@herculesbrofister265
3 жыл бұрын
How does he not? It's a lot more natural of a position because the guitar is more in front, like if he were standing. Classical guitarists play like that too
@apophis135 well i could'nt hear any strong notes in odd places
@jonpguitar he's actually playing so fast that reality perceives it as slow
how nice would it be to pick up a guitar and become a world-class virtuoso. damn damn damn. damnit.
@thegr8HarV I simplified it a bit haha
Do you hace the tabs??
Where i can find the tabs?
i also want a guitar with THAT specific 12th fret inlay...
0:49
A very Paul Gilbert-esque lick there. Dig it.
@wizardofmadness The progression is syncopated.
Legend has it those are custom made metal strings that can withstand temperatures of the sun
Maybe it's because I'm a was a drummer but every time I hear stuff like this my brain auto goes into seeing sixteenth notes 😂😂😂
Name of the scale?
there a tab for this somewhere?

infidel dan Your mom lol
@uidsea The fact that the key dropped damn near two semi-tones in the slowed version didn't confirm that enough for you? haha
If stranded in the forest, John Petrucci can light a fire by playing a tremolo-picked solo of 64th notes until his pick catches fire
🎸🎸👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🎩👍👍👍
GOD!!!
i just want to have a guitar..help!!

@ferociouspokemachine Children and teenagers will see this video and perhaps hear about the band for the first time.
nice slow - mo : D
@jonpguitar I prefer it that way to be honest :P
I would've loved to see Holdsworth do a "Lick of the Day"!
I'm not really a petrucci fan but I have to agree. I really think that was slowed down.
@Rizenchaos Ernie Ball Music Man JPX I think
did Paul actually think his hair looked good?
Pardon me, but does anyone have the tabs?
@Heaview
3 жыл бұрын
My mate, dont get me wrong, but John is playing literallly 4 notes only. Is not that hard to transcribe what you saw in the video to the paper, right? I think he told us the note names too. Just look for some neck map in a google search and then you'll know where and how to play it. Dont give up whenever you need to do some effort. No effort = no gain, no learning. When they dont give us tabs, just think as a teacher reading a text, and you writing what you listen from him. If he's saying "I'm playing a G in the D string", you'll know he's telling to you fret the 5 or the 17 fret in D String. It's not hard, not even tricky.
I like it better on left leg, general positionning feels more natural and comfortable.
420 thumbs up on a video with 88k views. I blindly skipped to 0:49 without even thinking. Thanks :D
love it :)
@Chrisfallen haha! :P
