Lick of the Day - John Petrucci - Two-Notes-Per-String Shred

Today's lick is a sequence of fast, descending arpeggios based on the E Aeolian mode (E F♯ G A B C D) and performed in a deliberate two-notes-per-string pattern. I use strict alternate picking throughout the entire lick, beginning on a downstroke.
When playing licks or melodies using two notes per string, many guitarists rely almost exclusively on their fret-hand ring and index fingers, even though the pinkie can more easily and comfortably reach most wide-interval stretches. If you find you're consistently shunning your pinkie during solos, I encourage you to follow my example and advice and practice this lick using your pinkie for the wide-interval stretch at the beginning of each arpeggio. You'll receive a great pinkie workout, after which you may begin to find yourself more at ease and sure-fingered when performing other licks incorporating wide-interval stretches.
Fingering prompts in the notation illustrate my specific fret-hand fingerings.
The tempo is 140 beats per minute, 69 for slow practice.

    Ryan Lawrence Actually I think it is better to slow down the fast version. That way we can see his technique unchanged. During slow demos, guitar players tend to exagerate their picking movements movements which is useless to watch since you won't achieve high speed playing that way. (notice when John plays slow in real time at 1:38. His movements are exagerated).

  • @royalcat10

    @royalcat10

    I don't think it's really an intentional exaggeration. One of the most common ways guitar players learn to increase their speed, is to not move faster per se, but to just decrease unnecessary and inefficient movements. Obviously, this can work in reverse as well. If you add in further, or bigger, picking movements and motions, you're going to slow down. These "exaggerations" are more of a way that he subconciously uses to play in time at slower speeds, than as some sort of flourish.

    @Element115fl Whats showy about this? JP is honestly a very humble guitarist in his own right. He is not trying to show off, this lick is not even a fast lick by JP's standards. Honestly grow up, hell don't even comment if you can't tell the difference between "showing off" and playing a lick with anything thats faster than Smoke on the Water.

    My mate, dont get me wrong, but John is playing literallly 4 notes only. Is not that hard to transcribe what you saw in the video to the paper, right? I think he told us the note names too. Just look for some neck map in a google search and then you'll know where and how to play it. Dont give up whenever you need to do some effort. No effort = no gain, no learning. When they dont give us tabs, just think as a teacher reading a text, and you writing what you listen from him. If he's saying "I'm playing a G in the D string", you'll know he's telling to you fret the 5 or the 17 fret in D String. It's not hard, not even tricky.
