Library Chat #18: The Struggles of Dealing With J-Movement Rhetoric (conversation w/ Br Basil)

In this Library Chat, Dr. Yasir Qadhi discusses some of the challenges that he, and others, faced dealing with the jihadi rhetoric of specific groups post 9/11, and the increased fear of radicalization of some youth on the one hand, and accusations of takfīr on the other, from different segments of the community.

In 2005 or round about back then, our Sheikh visited a masjid here in London UK, he gave a jummah khutbah and I distinctly remember hating him so much because of his sectarianism. At the same time, everyone else here were singing his praises. Alhumdolilah, fast forward 15 years and now I'm his biggest fan, I make dua in sujood for this man, he's more valuable to me than my own family and at the same time those individuals who used to sing his praises have likely become his biggest opponents (salafi Dawah is very popular here in the UK). Where are the others like YQ? Is scholarship in this Ummah really destined to be so narrow minded? Where are all the other objective researchers? Alhumdolilah, truly for Sheikh YQ. And, no I really don't care what the trolls think or say. Will see who's right on the day of all days.

It is amazing indeed but there are more out there. Check out the stuff coming out of the UK. Some of it is a bit more academic (for a different audience) but awesome work regardless. If you watched Shaykh YQ's interview with Dilly Hussein, you'll know what I mean.

Yes a great suggestion for you from the UK is Sheik Ali Hammuda. Very articulate, doesn't mention a hadith without giving the narration of who heard it and what book uit could be found in. I learned so much from Sheik Yasir Qadhi, there are very few videos left that I haven't watched by him, I'm always watching his library chats as well bc they really are informative and hard to find from others.

Ya Allah I remember those days as an AlMaghrib student and volunteer in Columbus Ohio. It personally had caused me a lot of confusion and turmoil from social pressures. Not so much the jihadi issues but definitely the madkhali salafiya. Alhamdulilah for making dua and continuing to seek knowledge. The aim was to cut us off from seeking knowledge with AlMaghrib which meant you gained balanced knowledge that helped you see with clarity and decipher btween guidance and sectarianism.. Brother Basil thank you for your leadership, vulnerability and growth. I'm a proud Hayler despite the struggles we had.

My heartfelt gratitude to you for the extensive work you`ve done and how much difficulty you have gone through for helping us through a difficult and dangerous time. The clarification you have brought by the grace of Allah has been critical for us all around the world reconciling our religious understanding and practice with a post colonialist world and the sparks of certain movements. I`d like to personally and publicly express my personal gratitude though this forum does not permit me to do so sufficiently ! Can you do a library chat on how you structure your day sheikh? I find it amazing all the stuff you get done with all your priorities so I’m curious as there must be some structure and planning around it, especially as you break up your day for prayers and family I’m sure. A day in the life video of sorts! Also the tools you find helpful (like a planner or eplanner, Ethan Apa, etc.) and also what your wife takes care of and you don’t worry about, cause I’m sure she’s your equal partner!

Also, please do some talks on the individual Sunni and Shia fiqh madhabs present and most relevant extinct ones. Development, many fiqh usul etc. many. Lastly, bring the above points full circle by talking about how the main Shia and Sunni fiqh madhabs connect the main Sunni and Shia sub sects. For example, Hanafis and Maturidiyyah or Hanbalis and Athariyyah (Salafiyyah) etc. This would give you so many topics, historical and theological, plus some fiqhi points to cover in a series of videos. These videos could all be put together a series inshallah.

As much as I'm against the US in their conduct overseas, even then, violence can only do so much. The US is too powerful in that regard, and taking up arms is almost futile. Waging war is exactly what the US wants because of its military industrial complex. If Muslims want a bigger say in how they want to be treated, we need to unite. Any efforts that might go to the random killing of civilians and military personnel should be focused on that unity instead. Not saying it will be easy. It will be so difficult it might not be achieved in our lifetime. But it doesn't change the fact that it must be done.

@Yasir Qadhi What is the proof, that Jibril talk to Muhammad in a cave (how many witnesses to this event) ? I want the academic answer, not just gibberish, Dr Qadhi. If you have no answers (or no valid answers) then my next question would be : What give any authority to the Qur'an according to you ?

As I read the Quran and let it sink in with whatever meaning I can grasp, I know it is not from a Human, and I have a BA, MA, and a JD from top North American universities; I know somewhat of human intellect. For me this is enough to assert Quran's authority. As for the cave story of first revelation, I think Muhammad related it to his wife Ayesha much later on, and she passed it to us. Whether you trust that chain of narration or not is up to you. Actually I learnt this from Yasir Qadhi's Seerah lecture series, and you can try that too.

@@usmanhannan5675 This is not enough for me to assert any authority (in particular an authority over the Bible) that is why I ask Dr.Y.Qadhi for his academic point of view. It must make sense remember, I'm not a muslim having respect for a fairy tale here, I'm asking proofs, not feelings. A man which appear to be alone in a cave, allegedly receiving a revelatioon by an 'angel' named Jibril, even if I 'let it sink' it will not convince me at all.

@@usmanhannan5675 Ya'juj & Ma'juj didn't make sense for Dr.Y.Qadhi, and he spent his life learning about the Qur'an, I just ask his academic 'bottom line' on the proof (from his point of view) that the Qur'an have any legitimate authority. And I start where Muhammad allegedly received a revelation in the cave, which I find already alarmingly weak, if there is not any solid proof that it happened, witnesses for example.

@@blackdog9619 For Yasir Qadhi and for me, Qur'anic narration of Yasir Qadhi, supported by authentic hadiths makes perfect sense. For Yasir Qadhi and for me, many scholarly explanations, both classical, like they are underground or group of people at the other side of the wall; or modern allegorical takes like they are some dark force or certain race out there does not make any sense. Scholarly explanations are just that, their explanation, and refuting those has nothing to with denying Yajuj and Majuj whatsoever.
