Dani really traded one bad, unhealthy relationship for another. Christian was trash and regularly gaslit and neglected her to the point of abuse, but the cult is no better. They constantly drug Dani to keep her out of her right mind, isolate her from her group, and manipulate her with love-bombing and grooming. In the end, she's only given the illusion of the freedom that she deserves and she doesn't even realize it. That's what makes this movie scary.

It’s not the illusion of freedom that she gets, it’s the illusion of love and family. She really wanted an emotional partner in Christian, she’s very codependent, and it increased after losing her family. She’s terrified of being alone, and now in this crazy cult, she’s happy because she’ll never be alone again.

The whole movie is a litmus test for how susceptible people are to cults. I don't hate Dani or Christian, and I feel like they passed a point of no return way before her decision to kill him. The cult was never going to let them go - especially Dani. If she had chosen the other guy to die, she would have failed their loyalty test/entrapment scheme & been placed inside the burning building along with Christian. I think something similar happened to Pelle's "parents" (he said they died in a fire) and Maja's child will probably be taken from her & raised with another couple, to believe he's was orphaned & adopted, just like Pelle.

Jack Reynor has said playing Christian put him in a very dark place, especially because they filmed this whole thing in 2 months. So he heavily invested in self-care because besides the horror, just being in Christian’s head was thoroughly depressing. He ran every day, and went to the gym, read a lot of books, cooked for himself, went to bed early, gave up alcohol, and made sure to get 8 hours of sleep. He said in an interview that he read the script and thought, ‘I can handle the cult stuff, but being the guy who STROLLS to his girlfriend’s apartment after her family got murdered…” He has said most people who recognized him just tell him they loved the movie, but occasionally a certain type of guy will say “you know, I was rooting for Christian,” and he’ll just go “huh…interesting.” 😂

Many people believe only women get r* and men can never be victims of these heinous crimes. So to see it portrayed in a film, it felt so gut wrenching and I couldn’t help but sympathize with the character because he was nowhere near in his right mind to even consent to it. I do understand he knowingly went to have s*x, he didn’t want to do it with that woman and he was merely a puppet in that moment. As a Nordic person born on Midsummer, I find it so interesting to see how people react to the traditions depicted in the movie. The creators clearly did some excellent research because many things from the naked love spells to the maypole dancing and even the burning of a wooden structure come from real things that are done on that day, of course with none of the death haha. Even the cliff derives from a Nordic legend about "age cliffs" (ättestupa in Swedish). Having grown up and seeing stuff like gathering sets of flowers, and arranging them to make people fall in love with me, as a normal thing, it's fun seeing how strange it is from the outside and definitely perfect material for a horror movie.

I think midsommar does a really good job of making the audience hate Christian and condoning his murder. Despite Christian being an awful person and human, the events leading up to his death (drugging him to being assaulted and make worse decisions) are horrifying and set up to make Dani choose to kill him. It’s a very uneasy ending because we’re sort of happy for Dani finding people that want her but we the cult also got what they wanted by manipulating this vulnerable girl 😭

  • @lunacouer

After I got through the whirlwind of emotions, I sat back and thought about what happens to Dani the day after and that's when the horror really set it. She's gonna come down off all those drugs and the high of being the May Queen (the lovebombing phase), and she's gonna realize not only did they kill all those people, but she essentially killed Christian. She won't be special anymore - she'll just be a worker bee in the hive. They're gonna put her to work in the kitchen and garden, she's gonna sleep in the communal bedroom, she'll never have a committed boyfriend or husband, they're gonna choose who she sleeps with, who she gets pregnant by and when (whether she ever wanted to have kids or not)... And she has no way to leave. They'll kill her if she tries. It's one thing to grow up in a cult believing all this, but she's already been "indoctrinated" to be an individual in the real world. Her only hope for any semblance of happiness is if she's been thoroughly, completely broken and accepts all their ways. Ari Aster did a great job in manipulating us into the ways of the cult too. We all have a day after, where we realize wait, Christian is horrible, but he didn't deserve to be raped and murdered for being a bad boyfriend. But we were rooting for that. At first we're happy for Dani - until we realize what happens after. We have to wake up from the cult indoctrination too. That's some masterful storytelling.

@@lunacouerthe way this exact question kept me up weeks after watching this nightmare. It’s all “fine and dandy” until she comes down from those drugs and reality sets in that she’s alone and stuck with this psychotic cult. She’ll constantly have to be drugged up and then ultimately her life is no longer her own. I really do feel like at the end, Dani had already reached a breaking point because that smile doesn’t seem like one of sheer happiness for finding her tribe. To me, it felt like she kind of accepted the inevitable. Her life was already changing so quickly and drastically but the events that occurred in the movie just sealed the deal. It gave me shivers and still does! And your last paragraph is PERFECT! It really did feel like a rollercoaster and reality hours days later that we also fell into the trap and begin to question ourselves. I surely did!

The scary part of this movie was the most genius: it's a movie about how easy it is to be pulled into a cult. Dani is the prime candidate to be taken in by a cult. She's alone, she's emotionally and mentally vulnerable, and even the horrors she's seen seem perfectly preferable to what she's already been given. Like, we all know that Christian and his buddies are either POS or just did wrong things, but we normally wouldn't condone mutilation and murder. But by the end we're thinking how DESERVED their fates were and how happy we are for Dani until it hits you how easy it was to be pulled into it yourself.

Idk if anyone pointed it out yet, but when they first arrive to the commune, Pelle goes up to the man, hugs him, and afterwards the man greets the rest of the friends. He shakes all their hands and says welcome but when he gets to Dani he says "Welcome Home" and hugs her and shes the only one he says that to. It's very quick and there isn't any emphasis on it so definitely easy to miss. (This happens at 18:00 in the video) The theory about this is that the whole idea of Dani getting to the Commune was all orchestrated by the Hargas. also at 8:40, the painting above Dani shows a girl kissing a bear on the head. Clearly this is foreshadowing to Christian being put in the bear and Dani saying goodbye to him.

So some things that were not translated in the movie but that adds extra to the film - the banner over the road in the beginning has the slogan bevara Sverige svenskt which translates to keep Sweden Swedish, unsurprisingly a nazi dog whistle, but it speaks to some of the darker undertones of the film - idk if it’s the theatrical or extended edition but at one point Pelle and Christian are discussing Maja and Pelle says she is “byxmyndig” which I think they translate to “old enough” or “adult” (basically telling Christian she’s of age to have s*x). The thing they didn’t translate is that byxmyndig is 15, while it’s still creepy to get with this random 18 year old, she ain’t even 18. (Edit: she’s 16 if she came of age the year before)

Simon’s grotesque fate is something known as the “Blood Eagle”. It’s a legendary execution technique from the Viking era. There are writings describing it and I think even a visual depiction or two in scrollwork or tapestries. I refer to it as legendary though because I don’t believe there is much proof it was ever actually carried out and I believe that the few depictions were made later in the Viking period centuries after it was supposedly done to anyone.

Fun facts about the film: when they're carrying Dani, the trees and shrubs in the background make up the image of her sister with the tube in her mouth. Also, the paintings all have hints or directly say about what is going to happen. Spoilers for The Invisible Man: Midsommar was one of the three that I love that end on a smiling woman. The VVitch, Midsommar, and The Invisible Man. It is my opinion that they end on a smiling, single woman because there is nothing more frightening/threatening to a man than a happy single woman.

I wouldn't say Dani is HAPPY. She is broken. She has been brainwashed and driven mad. Honestly, I would say the same of Thomasin in The VVitch, too. She is a young girl, 16 years old, and is broken down by her families deaths into joining the witches by Black Phillip. She saw herself as damned and figured she may as well enjoy material luxury instead of losing her whole family for NOTHING. Black Phillip never tries to make her a deal BEFORE every member of her family is dead or gone and she has no options. Like, hell yeah, imma smile while flying until I learn that the ability to make me do so is from my dead infant brother. As for the Invisible Man, ABSOLUTELY, yes, good for her.

My theory of how dani got into the cult at the end was always that she had no one to share her pain with , she’s alone , her boyfriend and friends are emotional monsters , she needed someone , anyone , sadly that was the cult , when the elders jumped off the cliff and the guy didn’t die and they all started screaming to “share his pain “ , I feel like Dani started to get sucked in , she was vulnerable, that’s how cults gets you even in real life , they target your weakness some of them even do mandatory fasting to even weaken the person , so at the end especially when she see’s her boyfriend having s3x and all the villagers gather around to scream to “share her pain “ , that was the lock in for her

I think the drugs they gave me in the tea put him in a state where he just does whatever someone tells him to because he's confused and can't think clearly. The woman (was her name Ula?) didn't lie to him when he asked what it does- "it opens you to the influence"- he drank it anyway without asking any why it's just for him in particular. Really, I'm surprised the guy lived THIS long, as he has no survival instincts whatsoever. He's an easy mark for just about anything. Then the stuff they made him inhale "for his vitality" gave him an erection. So I'm going to say no, he doesn't want to participate in this. Maybe I think he was flattered by Maja's interest and wanting to cheat on Dani given the opportunity, but I think her being underage and the odd interest of the community hooking him up with her was weirding him out. When he comes to awareness, he's clearly freaked the fuck out. I would not call him a cheater. Unfortunately I'd call him a rape victim.

Later I realized how smart it was to leave it out. The theatrical cut makes us question ourselves on how we could be ok with him essentially being raped and murdered. He's awful, but does that mean he deserves that? Are we really going there? The director's cut gives us too much of an easy out, with how villainous he was and making it seem like it was _all_ consensual. We miss the point that once he was drugged, not once being told how this was gonna go down, it was rape. And we definitely needed to look at that. This movie really did open up the dialogue about male rape, and I'm glad it did.

@@lunacouer Nah... nothing he did in either version justified burning him alive. Anyone who felt Christian deserved it fell into an artistic trap.

You know what the scariest thing about this film is? You know damn well that somewhere out there in the world this shit is ACTUALLY happening.

your commentary is therapeutic. I was a little bit like Danny. I got divorced when I was 40 and I was ill, no friends, crying every day, and I got a boyfriend who was like Christian and I apologized all the time for my depression. I couldn't see it at the time but that's the beauty of art, it reveals things to us we couldn't see before.

55:30 the death simon had is called a blood eagle, it’s a supposed type of torture/death from the viking era, it’s also done while they’re still alive… i had to research after seeing it in this and then also in the show “vikings” where it was even more graphic, horrifying but interesting to learn about.

At 20:30 - Dani and Christian were together for four years, but as we heard, Christian was contemplating ending it for over a year and a half. He was planning on leaving Dani (But what if I want her back?) and then Dani's sister annihilated the family. Perhaps he stayed with her out of pity. I'm not letting Christian off the hook for his toxicity, but he's been on the fence on breaking up with her for awhile.
