Marty is actually the best fit for his assigned role. According to the tarot , the "Fool" isn't dumb , per se. He is more of a trickster archetype , and his silliness and funny remarks often mask a remarkable perception , hidden wisdom , and/or unusual luck.

Jules is pre med and very intelligent. but she has the horror movie "whore" look. hence why they made her the whore. Marty is not hinted at being a virgin anywhere in the movie, but he is hinted at being a very intelligent engineer (he easily rewires their stuff and can do overrides of their system to get into the elevator) who likes to smoke pot. they tried lacing the pot to make him dumb , aka the fool, but it didnt work. the whole point is that they are all "real" people with many sides that cant be bogged down to one short simple description. but that is what they needed them to be. they needed to pin them down into these simple one sided stereotypes to please the "gods" ( the american movie viewers who doesnt want multifaceted characters. they want it simple and gory.) so they played into one aspect of their personality and made it their entire personality.

One of the reasons I love this film is that its all about hubris. The controllers have done this so many times that they no longer are as careful or precise about the sacrifices as they might have once been. They're supposed to gather up and sacrifice a bunch of young people who fit certain archetypes (the Virgin, the Whore, the Athlete, the Scholar, and the Fool). The problem is, they get the archetypes wrong. They've assigned the roles to Dana (Virgin), Jules (Whore), Curt (Athlete), Holden (Scholar), and Marty (Fool), when none of them actually fit those roles. Dana might seem virginal, but early in the movie she confesses to an affair with her professor. Jules is sexy and dresses skimpy, but she's also flighty and overly concerned with non-important things in her life; also she is in a clearly loving and utterly monogamous relationship with Curt, which hardly fits the whore archetype. Curt might seem like a jock, but his athletic skills are mediocre at best, and he's seen lugging around high-level textbooks dealing with subjects like the Psychology of the Soviet System. Holden is smart, sure, but at the same time he's clearly more athletic than Curt is, and while he has the raw intelligence, he's clearly lazy about it. And Marty... well, Marty might be a stoner but he also admits he's never had sex in his life. So... Had the controllers done the research, they would have realized that the archetypes should have been assigned with Dana being the Whore, Jules being the Fool, Curt being the Scholar, Holden being the Athlete, and Marty being the Virgin/Final Girl.

Did Jules even act like that prior to being drugged by the controllers? Does one affair make someone a whore? (Technically, whores have sex for money.) It's all pretty questionable, regardless. One of the boys has probably slept around more if that is the definition they are going with. Don't get me wrong, though, very good observations!

It's such a great metaphor for how horror audiences (the Ancient Ones) hold so much power over the genre, any time a trope gets changed or subverted people lose their minds so creators have to stick to a strict "formula" to keep them placated & coming back for more. But, when the characters were forced away from their natural dispositions and their actions too obviously manipulated the "experiment" failed anyway because it was just so poorly executed. A cautionary tale about forcing a story rather than innovating, evolving, and pushing boundaries while still staying within expectations.

I'll point out one reference. In a movie called "Hellraiser," there is a Chinese puzzle box. When used, it can open a portal to another dimension, and release "Cenobytes," mostly humanoid beings that have been warped in various painful ways. The leader of this group is known as "Pinhead," as he has dozens of pins laid out in a grid across his entire bald head. That is what the puzzle sphere, and the man with sawblades in his head is referencing.

It’s interesting that you gravitated to Marty and said you wanted him as the final girl/“Virgin”, since the 5 of them already sort of fit the preordained “tropes” before the interference (like Dana starts off as “The Whore” because she’s sleeping with her professor, Holden is “The Athlete” while both Jules and Curt could be “The Scholar”), because of that breakup story, Marty can be considered the true “Virgin”.

They all talk and we get humor and characterization Dana watches Holden Dana covers the mirror Dana sees the creepy painting. Then the cool transition from her room to the monitor of her room. This way we can get the levity and character but still begin and end on a creepy tone while also underscoring voyeurism and scopophilia as a major theme.

The Facility choose people who were much different than what they needed for their roles. Most of the characters we meet were tampered with well before their trip. All the decisions leading to the basement were not their decisions or not decisions they would have made unless being chemically altered. I know the technician said that the sacrifices have to make their decisions but he really meant that they couldn't be physically forced to. The Facility has been around for centuries and found loopholes to ensure 100% success. I like to think that they became too complacent and their reliance on technology instead of fake sacrifices is was caused them to falter. Awesome reaction as always :)

It is very surprising that Chris Hemsworth was in a horror film like this but this is kind of before he became known for playing Thor in the MCU. And... "He's got a husband buldge" still gets me 😂 This is one of my faaavorite movies! The story is so well written & the comedy hits every time lol I grew up on Buffy & Angel so I can't be too surprised 😅 Though I'm not a big fan of everything getting a sequel these days, I feel like this could have a great prequel limited series! Same horror comedy tone, but told from the perspective of the corporation. Each episode could take place during a different year. A peek behind the curtain while exploring the other monsters 😬 Thank you for reading my Ted talk lol

You should really watch Tucker & Dale Vs Evil. It's a similar tone of horror comedy that functions as "what if the hillbilly inbred killers were actually the good guys and the teen gang of slasher victims were the bad guys" It's pretty funny and has a great performance by the lead that makes you really root for the guy. Also The Final Girls is about the daughter of a famous scream queen getting magically sucked into her mothers movie and having to learn to survive till the end with the character her mother played when she was younger. It has one of the most funniest/heartfelt climax scenes I've ever seen.

I'm so glad you were able to "get" most of the references to other horror movies! This is honestly one of my favorites, because it has that other layer to it. It is just a story about sacrificing to elder gods to prevent the apocalypse. But it's also about how much of our own innate violence we farm out to media these days.

I was planning to go to bed before sunrise, but then this popped up at the last moment before I was about to abandon KZread for the night. How can I skip a Queen's reaction to "Cabin in the Woods"? This movie and "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil" are two of my favorite horror-comedy quasi-spoof movies. I never, ever get tired of watching them or reactions to them. The first time I saw this, when it was over, I had to go back and replay the bit where Marty and Dana were trapped in the cube and it was showing all the different horrors in the cubes around them, and then I had to go back further, to see the whiteboard and see what monsters they had written on it. It was just such a neat idea that they had a collection of supernatural horrors that they could unleash at will. But my one big question is... how do they get them back in the cages when the sacrifice is over? Stupidity gas? 😁 Or are the monsters just like, "Geez, that was fun! Thanks for the exercise. See you next year!" and they shuffle back into the elevator. I personally can't blame Dana for almost shooting Marty. If you believe Sigourney, we're talking about doing something horrible, but to save billions of people. Which I can see some people being willing to do in a desperate moment. Personally, there aren't many people I truly, deeply love, but the friends and family I do love, I truly ride or die for. I would have shot Sigourney the second I got my hands on that pistol, and the world can try to survive from there. Not my problem anymore! 😈I'm with Marty though. I would have at least wanted to see the giant evil gods stomping around before I died.

The film was originally made for MGM, and had been ready for release in 2009, but at that time, MGM was having financial troubles and didn't have the money to put it out. Then when new management came in 2011, they sold it off to Lionsgate, who in turn took another year to get it in theatres in 2012, but to their credit, they knew how to market it and make it a hit. It did kinda gall me when, after it was successful, Lionsgate started taking credit for it like they'd been there at the beginning when the truth was they just got lucky buying it off someone else.

I love that this movie explains away every dumb decision made by slasher characters and essentially makes them all canon in this universe. The American "failure" from '98 that the scientists mentioned is assumed by many online to be 'The Faculty' given the survival of that movie's archetype characters.

This movie feels like a long lost Buffy episode. Joss Whedon had been working on the this concept since Buffy season 1. If you remember season 1 episode 10 titled Nightmares, Xander says he's afraid of Nazis, and then almost wanders down a hallway into Nazi territory. At the last second he sees a candy bar and follows candy down a different hallway where he runs into this exact same clown.

Don’t know if you noticed but I assume you’re a Whedon fan (or at least a fan of his work lol) because you recognized Amy Acker. But we’ve also got the always underrated Fran Kranz as Marty (Topher from Dollhouse) and the great Tom Lenk (Andrew from Buffy) too! Whedon and Drew Goddard wrote the script with Goddard directing. And Goddard, who has written some pretty big movies like Cloverfield and The Martian, got his start on Season 7 of Buffy! He wrote some of the best eps in the last season IMO. Anyway, love this movie and a great reaction!

Watched this film for the first time to prep for your reaction, and wow, it DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! Holy shit!! I loved this movie and this reaction, tysm for finally giving me the push to watch it, girl!! 🎉 I think Marty is the easy favorite (I’m so glad Alanda grew fond of him too! He’s just super endearing on top of the whole, uh, devil’s lettuce-indulgence-causing-immunity thing lol, but it’s cool that he’s kind of supposed to be the favorite, because of that? He’s the one we see the most “real” personality out of, given that he notes just HOW out of character literally everyone else is acting, especially Kurt and poor Jules and her impromptu awkward ass friend-group stripteases lmao. (The hard cut to Holden and Dana just sitting there like 😟as she’s gyrating near about killed me) I paused on the shot of the dry-erase board with all the Monsters those rotted office workers were waging bets on, and I’m so glad I did-references ABOUND. Also love the bits and pieces of foreshadowing that the office dudes didn’t do their studying good enough, shown briefly through things like Marty confirming that he’s a virgin during Jules and her strange lil gyration session, Dana being labeled the modest virgin whilst sleeping with her professor, ect ect. It’s SO good, I eat subtle shit like that up. Also just…yes, to Marty being a “final girl” in a sense. King deserves it, he was fantastic. 10/10 film for me, had a blast! (I’ll stop the rambling now, but I also have to say that Alanda saying “Why does that sound like Sigourney Weaver?” to the lady on the intercom, only to find out like five minutes later that it WAS Sigourney Weaver cracked me up lol 🤣Our girl never misses!! 💪)

Not everyone did but I saw it in the theaters back in the day (2000s) and the audience was either laughing or screaming pretty much the whole time. Fun experience. The director (Eli Roth) did a remake in 2016 but I still prefer the original just for its randomness and shock value lol

It would have cost a ton, but they should have made a version for each item/monster that they all held. Also, the two writers (one being Joss Whedon) "locked" themselves in their home for the weekend, refusing to leave until they finished the script. They got it done in a 2 or 3-day span.
