Liam Gives ABA Therapy Another Try

We are giving ABA Therapy a second chance with our autistic 2 year old toddler. There are many different autism therapies at home that can help a child with autism prosper and the answer can be different for every child. I applaud your disclaimer about ABA therapy, specifically the part of saying "ABA might not work for your child" because I think that's super important for parents to hear. As an Autistic person, I have mixed feelings about ABA but I really support parents being involved with the ABA or any therapy process really. You are amazing!

I love this, you explained it well! I was diagnosed with autism, level 1 so I never needed much support. I have heard about the horrors of ABA and this inspired me to become a Behavior Technician myself to revolutionize the field in a sense by breaking the stigma and showing how it can be beneficial with a person who knows the struggles firsthand. I think we need more autistic therapists in this field who can empathize and truly understand their clients.

We are looking forward to having placements with various disabilities and you sharing helps me learn a lot of the “real life” (vs. textbook) perspective. Though you can never truly be “ready,” you sharing helps me so much! Thank you, Stephanie. This ABA company sounds wonderful. Hopefully the more “old school” operating companies follow suit.

I watched a documentary about a little boy, he was actually a teenager at that point, that had "recovered" from his autism by being trained out of it with ABA. It was somewhere in Europe and girl it was harsh. I couldn't believe they did that. Any they recorded it. And showed it to him. And he got really quiet and asked them to shut it off. He said all he could remember of that time was being frightened. I don't have any experience with it because my son doesn't have issues like that but just from what I saw with that child I'm glad you're watching and won't let them go to far. I had no idea. I can definitely see how it could be extremely traumatic if it's not done carefully.

@Caitlin Woods They physically forced him. They overpowered him and made him do what they wanted him to do. He screamed and cried. He was absolutely hysterical. They ganged up on him because he was too upset for one person to control. It was terrible. It really was. I'd go to jail if I caught somebody doing that to a child. It need not even be my child. It made me mad.

  • @franny5295

@Caitlin Woods He was a teenage at the time of the recording and I don't remember how old it was. I think it was kind of old. I want to say Sweden, Denmark, one of Norwegian European countries is where that happened. Most of them had really blond hair and had funny accents if they spoke English. I don't know what the rules are. I wonder even now how his parents could go along with that and then I remember that there are parents now trying to bleach autism out of their kids. I know it sounds like I'm lying but I read about parents giving their kids bleach to drink to "cure" them of autism and it's like, how could anybody not know better than that? I don't know.

there are two vintage videos on autism treatment in the 1960's, one is in a Scandinavian nation and one is in the UK. Totally different and the Scandinavian was so much more "take time, don't force anything..." just such improvement also. A happier child, if nothing else. A child that could interact, and smile, and the other was "Whatever, this is what you get, we babysit them and give the parents a break."

Your approach and response to aba misconceptions or bad experiences was great. I have seen and heard from some very angry and hurt people with autism and it is very sad that their caregivers maybe weren’t as informed or didn’t feel they could advocate for them as much as they could have. Or that other services were maybe not available or affordable to them. Autism in our house is also a good thing, it makes our little people who they are and we love who they are. One video at a time and hopefully the misconceptions of autism and therapy options will change! Oh and the man bun 👍🏻😍 cute as!

As blind adult, I don’t make eye contact, I look in peoples direction because people like it. In school I looked wherever I wanted, closed my eyes, and I learned just fine. Eye contact makes other people feel heard, but it doesn’t mean you are or aren’t listening. I am employed, independent, and live a happy life without being able to see others eyes. Eye contact isn’t needed to be successful in life, it’s only needed to make people who don’t know better feel good.

Also, you don’t know what is huge for lex and what isn’t so asking for something like a sandwich could be underestimating him. Plus, If he is anything like my 4 year old he asks for a pb&j for every meal, and no you can not eat them three times a day. You need other foods. You can have that at lunch but for breakfast and dinner we are going to have something else.

Why are therapists wearing masks? Especially as those are speech therapies.. In my country people working with small kids (up to 7th grade) are not wearing masks because kids need to see a face, lips while person is speaking etc... They wanted to put masks on kindergarten / daycare teachers but all the professional people who work with kids and doctors were strongly against this so now working with kids is mask free, especially working with babies and toddlers! We wont get this time back and every moment spent educating kids is precious and crucial.
