LGR - Theme Hospital - DOS PC Game Review

Ойын-сауық

Bullfrog's Theme Hospital is like no other management sim you have ever played. Well, except for maybe its predecessor Theme Park. Still, nothing like a little bloaty head and slack tongue to start the day off right!

I forgot to add that the last official patch for the game added multiplayer capability. Serial and modem connections allow for two players to compete in building the best hospital while competing against two computer-controlled hospitals, while the IPX/SPX option allows up to four players to compete against each other on a network for the best hospital.

    Totally agree with you about the staff management in this game. They will always demand pay rises and will not stick with their designated room which is a serious problem when a patient needs to see a specialist. Ever since I started playing this as part of a Let's Play I'm doing, I've found that the staff seem to be programmed to hate their jobs- regardless of their skill level and how well paid they are. I decided to a test on this by creating a staff room that much more closely resembled an Arcade. The doctors I had onboard quickly ignored their duties, leaving many patients in the reception either vomiting or dying from negligence.

  • @SusCalvin

    @SusCalvin

    2 жыл бұрын

    There was an option in a menu to make staff assignments stick, where they would stay in their assigned rooms. Otherwise the staff AI will try to man rooms in demand by drawing on idle doctors or doctors from less busy rooms. You can adjust a slider for how much tiredness staff accumulate before heading to the nearest staff room. I found that overstaffing works. Exactly one staff per room means little when a third of the goobers are on break, a few surplus reserve doctors help if you can afford it. Staff always have a little job satisfaction drop over time. You could go through the staff menu and bump it up with a one-time cash bonus to prevent the demand for a wage increase. It can be a bit tedious, but even several pages of staff is easy to judge. Startopia had the same deal where you had to scroll through the staff menu and check off which ones needed a cash incentive. Working in cramped little offices without a potted plant or heating, or having tiredness build up, drops it faster. The more overworked staff are, the longer time they spend in the staff room getting their tiredness down. And the longer they have to walk to get there, the longer their total time off work becomes. Sometimes it's more efficient to set up a couple new staff rooms in a huge, sprawling hospital than to have one huge, central arcade. This is a game about managing flow and how much time people waste walking from one end to the other.

    The best staff room is as small as possible with only sofas so the staff stay sat down resting quicker than if they are wandering between pool tables and arcades in a large room.

    I love this game, I've still got my original box. The more annoying problem for me are the earthquakes, once it destroys one of your rooms, you are left with rubble that can't be cleaned up, eventually half of your hospital is in rubble and you cant do anything about it.

    I'd play this game again if it weren't for the constant earthquakes on the later levels. It was so ridiculous. The earthquakes occurred so frequently that I wasn't able to maintain my machines fast enough and they would explode. The game does not allow me to clear the debris so the room I built for the machine is rendered useless. I was spamming my hospital with maintenance staff, too. I wouldn't have minded the earthquakes so much if I at least had the option to clear the debris!

  • @HaBBiSiFy

    @HaBBiSiFy

    ninja plz Replace hardware of the machines every so often, it brings them back on full strenght - otherwise the strenght will lower down to 1 over time. Earthquakes do 1-6 damage, so that's why your machines blow up. Also the earthquakes come in pairs - the first one being warning, not dealing damage. When you get the first earthquake, quick save (alt+s). If some of your machines get wrecked, quick load (alt+l) and stop that from happening again.

    That's the challenge tho, you can't remove the destroyed rooms so you won't easily win the game. Just put an army of maintenance and you're set. Also a tip for earthquake, usually there will be 2 earthquake in one instance. The first one will be smaller, following with the bigger one that usually would destroy the machinery. When the first one starts to happen, reduce the game speed to slowest, and then save the game. Then start replacing every damaged machines so they won't blow up on the 2nd earthquake. In case there's still a machine you can't save, re-load the game and quickly replace that machine so you can prevent its demise. Slowest speed will be your best buddy on the later levels.

    Interesting. Your copy of Theme hospital doesn't come with the restart game option in the file menu. Also I would like to point out that for anyone new to the game it does have a pause and slow down function. It's 1,2,3, and P just like in the Sims. If you suffer from a rat problem you should slow down the game and kill it real time. Apparently if you kill enough rats or know a secret code you can unlock a minigame at least that's what I've read. There are cheat codes for both versions of the game so feel free to use that when the game starts getting odd on you.

    Holy smokes! Thank you very very much! I just tried this game, and I found it borderline unplayable even on the easiest setting. The hospital got flooded with people when I just have finished the second room and the staff quits like 2 minutes after they're hired.. I hired a blazing fast janitor once, and he wanted a raise, like everyone and their mother, but he was so fast I couldn't click on him! I will give it another try on lower speed. The micromanagement will still be insane though. All the maintenance stuff is tedious and deviates from the core game. Radiators, fire extinguishers, plants, benches, trash cans and freaking soda machines shouldn't be part of the game, there's enough to do already.

    There's actually 5 speed settings: slowest, slow, medium, fast, and fastest. They can be activated from the menu or using numbers 1-5 although fastest only works in the original DOS version. In the windows version, 4 and 5 (fast and fastest) run at exactly the same speed. No idea why.

    This was the only computer game at an after school club I went to for those children whose parents didn't love the enough to pick them up at home time, I was about 7, none of us really understood this game, we borrowed loads of money, built massive staff rooms with tvs and just generally ruined the game because for us it was an acheivement to get to the second level, I bought it a little while ago, and started to play it on our ancient computer, 4 words I LOVE THIS GAME :)

    I'm gonna say it.....this is one of the best games ever made. Yeah I said it. The best way to beat this game on the later levels is to take out the maximum loan, build everything possible. Once you build the research facility, set diagnosis research to 100%. Keep building the newly researched rooms. Gradually pay back the loan and watch the money and rep roll in.

    I love this game!! For anyone looking to play this game for the first time, I have so tips on how to reduce the staff complaints problem. -It is important to note that a lot of pay raise demands usually mean something is making your staff unhappy, raising pay is only a temporary fix. I find that having a large staff room with several sofas, a couple TVs and a pool table helps to avoid this situation. -With a big hospital, your staff may not be able to get to the staff room in time to rest before they reach the point where they start to complain, or are needed again at their work-post, so having a small staff room in unconnected buildings is a must. (Not to mention it helps to keep the rare and elusive surgeons close to the operating theater.) -Having extra items in every room also helps to keep staff happy. I don't recommend plants, since they require care. I usually give each room a heater, a fire extinguisher (which helps to keep your equipment in better shape and may reduce the risk of explosions) and a trash can. -The staff also hates being too hot or too cold, so keeping your hospital properly heated helps reduce complaints. I find a heater in every room usually does the trick. Place them on opposite walls to avoid over-heating. -Hiring an extra nurse or doctor may help to keep things running smoothly while one of them needs a rest. Note: The secretary never needs to rest, so you only need one per reception desk. Hope it helps! :D

    Does the receptionist's skill level actually do anything? I generally just go for the cheapest one as she seemingly constantly has minimum tiredness and maximum happiness.
