LGR - Fixing & Installing a Parallel Port CD-ROM
Ғылым және технология
Setting up an external CD drive on a Compaq Presario 425! Since this PC only has two already-filled ISA slots and nowhere for an internal optical drive, Backpack setups were great. Now to repair it...

I could not agree more, Menstrual Machine and Brap Hampton. 8-bit Guy is alright and really smart with this stuff too but he doesn't have the beautiful, soothing voice of Clint.

Strange how KZread does that to a person. I watch bigclivedotcom even though I haven't a clue about what the hell he's talking about. And I watch Simone Giertz even though I don't have much interest in robots (though, in her case, I know it's because I've got a crush on her!)

Feel free to hate me, but I really liked that song. If you're into progressive rock, that's probably your cup of tea, if you're not... probably sounds like garbage. Anyway, I made a tiny bit of research and found it's Todd Duane's work. Listen to other stuff from him... really cool. Mine used a parallel port, which Power Macintosh models could have a card inserted to use, but most did not by default. There was a SCSI version of the drive if memory serves though!
This was an entertaining video as usual, LGR! Love watching you mess with these things, and glad you could get a different disc drive working in there! With the age of these things, it's honestly no surprise when something just stops working.
There's something about these old all in one computers that I've always loved. I've actually owned two of the later case designs of this Compaq but sadly had to sell them awhile back. I miss both of them. Such great aesthetics and love that you can just plop them anywhere, hook up a keyboard and mouse, and you're ready to go. My dream all in one is the Packard Bell Spectria, yes, an all in one Packard Bell. Too bad they're ridiculously hard to find, even harder to find than the corner design.

Understandable, after watching 8-Bit Guy tear down and rebuild two early Macs.
One of my favourite times of the week is Friday (also Monday), because it means I get to watch a new LGR video. What a great way to start/end the week!
I've not seen you repair anything before, being a review channel and all. I was thoroughly entertained. My wife and my daughter both think that I am nuts for keeping my old computer stuff and storing it in my closet in the computer room, but I really enjoy seeing you review some of the very same things that I have in there. Love this channel!
That music gave me a few good chuckles and claps thank you.
it's great to wake up, make a cup of coffee, and sit down to another great LGR video about old tech.
I really enjoyed that, something about the combination of Clint's voice, jazz, and computer repair sends me to a happy place 😊
your channel has reinvigorated such a spark in me. I too worked in my high school as a pc tech while attending, and was employed by them after graduating for a while too - which lead me to various pc tech roles at the apple factory, bestbuy/geeksquad, and circuit city's firedog as a trainer and supervisor of techs; until i decided to change careers and go into graphic design - i've since become 'a mac person' but still remember every DOS command, every virus fix (xp's sasser worm anybody?) etc. and just spent the day troubleshooting my friends' PC rebuilding projects; we built a home theater PC to be a PLEX and Steam client; a gaming rig with all fresh parts, and the leftovers into an extra PC; doing the old gambit of windows updates, driver installs, browser installs, and classic utilities everyone needs; sigh - macs have spoiled me. lol. felt good to get back into it. watching this was the icing on the cake today. Thanks so much!!!! #respect
I always truly enjoy your retro videos! No matter what they contain. :) You make me see the thingamobobs "live", that I was drooling over in the magazines during childhood. Keep it up pal!
Another classic LGR video. Really happy seeing that creative music player in Windows. Many memories flooded back. Thank you so much for making this video.

I think this is my favorite of your videos. Very entertaining
I'm not even into vintage hard/software, but you make it very interesting! Good stuff buddy!
I enjoy your videos quite a bit. Please keep it up!
Back in highschool I had a backpack drive for a 2nd hand laptop just like the 2nd one you showed. Ahh the memories. Thanks!
It's so beautiful. Brings a tear to my eye.
EPP, ECP ... woah, more flashbacks. :D Keep up the awesome work :)
I kinda want one of those... Not sure why Great video! Brings back so many memories
i love the way that computer looks it is a cool all in one great video man 👌👍
Thanks for that flashback. I worked for Micro Solutions from 97ish to when they closed as technical support. It was a great company and I remember the old cdrom drive you had in its prime. They also had tape drives, hard drives, PD drives (that tech didn't last long), cdrw drives, and at the end also did a NAS box and fingerprint locked hard drive. It was a great company to work for where the tech, sales, owners, engineers all knew each other and were a tight group. Good to see a few products still exist. LoL
Wow, holy shit, windows 3.1. Brings back so many memories. I didn't think these computers still work anymore. Keep up the great retro work!

I love the idea of you playing videogames in your old Highschool computer. Its just so cool.
I've got one of the later models of these. Great video!
I love LGR hardware videos. (That's not to say I don't like the other video's, they're all good!)
Oh my gosh I've also used to have those PC Speakers as well! Makes me so happy seeing them ahh!!
This video is entertaining as F@€}. Keep up the good work with all the old stuff!
Good lord, I had an early Backback setup! Same case design and all, this was back in the late 90s. Reliable as heck, back when it took a couple hours to write a CD. Have fun with it!
Good guy clint. Love your stuff dude.
You Are my favorite KZreadr i enjoy watching you!
I have the same external drive to use on my Compaq. It was the only parallel port CD ROM drive I could find on Ebay that wasn't at a crazy price! Mine was NOS and so far is working really well so no need for repair work thankfully :D. Its definitely a big beast and takes up a good amount of space on the desk.
i fixed tons of those drives yrs ago..... this is a great & funny vid as always!
OH MY GOD. a parallel cd-rom! holly eff. wow. this brings back memories. man everyone loved the parallel port - flat bed scanners, zip drives, the SNAPPY lol
Its always nice to discover that old hardwares are using standard parts so its easy to repair.
@LGR

It is indeed. If anything I hope this video shows that these things aren't a lost cause and can often easily be fixed :)
A very interesting video on installing hardware.
excellent video, I used to use those external drives for Norton Ghost images when I worked at an old computer store.
The first computer I personally owned was a later revision of this model. It came with a cd-rom and Windows 95. I loved it. It was a great computer back in early '95.
Yep. The first CD-ROM drive I used (in around '93 I think) was a single-speed parallel-port interface. Horribly slow, but back then it was amazing! You could get shareware CD's at the time (before everyone had the internet), and that provided hours of fun looking through all the software. Also, in college I had that exact ZIP drive, parallel port.. Sooo sloooowww, but I loved it!
Whohooo This PC remainds me on old days :-) We used this as a Door Control PC :-) Good Job
That's a pretty formidable tripod for such a diminutive camera! Good Gawd, OVERKILL!

I believe the yellowing is caused by a type or bromide in the blastic, which is a flame retardant. Also just came across your channel a month ago and have enjoyed everything I have watched since. Especially the thrift videos. :)
That Paintbrawl music... Totally made this video worth watching.
I have the Presario 433 still working. You just made my nerd teenage dream come true.
I love these types of videos!
I love the Blues Brothers reference there. Smooth thinking Clint. Haha.
this felt like a druaga1 video, hehe. cool video! :)
Ohh man those speakers are awesome haha. I have exactly the same set up at the cottage. Tho mine are considerably more yellow. Gotta love that sweet 90's off white color!!
from what I can see from the reflection off the computer, you have a nice kitchen.

AHHH! A Compaq Presario 425, that was my first computer. I miss you little buddy!
That Compaq drive is so beautiful
On my Presario 425 I had as a kid I installed a soundblaster and spliced the power to the hdd. That got routed through the second isa (pci?? I can't remember) slot along with the ide cable from the soundblaster. In other words, I had an internal 4x cd-rom next to the computer. Worked great for years. 👍🏻
That music is next level. If you have a tremendous amount of dexterity and fine motor skills, but only had paddles for hands with no fingers, this is the music model for you.
I looked up the Extreme Paintbrawl OST, and you're the top commenter on there....from 11 years ago lol
Excellent Video. Glad to know i'm not the only person who tucks their T-Shirts into their trousers as well.

Never thought I'd ever see one of those backpack CD-Rom drives again. But should have known if any channel would show one it would be yours. LOL. I had one of those given to me, but never used it. The AC adapter was the most interesting part aside from the sound card upgrade port.
Some what random but i had a set of those labtec speakers when i was younger, i was obsessed with them since they had bass control knob!
Oh my god this brings back memories!!!
11:33 always cracks me up. One of the most infectious laughs I've heard!
Man, I love your Chaos shirt
I know this is a random question, but when you are restoring old PCs like this where do you get the OS from? Just stuff you acquired over time, or is there an online resource that has a lot of these things?
@LGR
7 жыл бұрын
I've got quite a collection kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2yLuM6dk5e7j5s.html :) But yeah, there are also sites like WinWorld that are useful for finding an old OS download in a pinch.
The first home computer we had was an Compaq Presario, a newer type than this, with speakers too, they were under the corners of the screen, and Windows 3.11. Too bad it has been thrown away, it was super expensive when new too... I miss using DOS and trying to get games working with too little RAM and Hard Drive space, I played DOOM, Hexen and WarCraft 2 into the 2000`s on that one. A time when you finally got the game running, you actually deserved to play it, and that was an achivement in itself.
The drive that you used to repair the newer Backpack is the one that Compaq used for their 1999 models. (Used to own one and tinkered with it all the time.) That makes it still somewhat appropriate to use with your Presario ;-)
I love those old cd rom install screens
you mentioned scsi, that would be so awesome to have on such a Compaq system. Easy to add zip as well!
You know what I subcribe because your channel is very very interesting
You just reminded me I have a set of those speakers laying about
those compaqs were in my computer class in school in 95 I love those things, memories of wolfenstein and a multiplayer tank game I can't recall
Nice speakers! i just loved them with the computer also that power supply port on the case is just weird i didnt ever had seen one like this one. it looks like a ps/2 port but with a missing connector hole.
LGR, I'm glad you're not lazy, focus only on gaming and only do reviews.
Once upon a time, this was top of the line technology. How did I get so old?
I remember back in 1991 or 1992 we would borrow a parralel CD-Rom drive (1x or 2x) from my Dads work and have great fun going through the few demo discs we had especially a Sierra Sampler CD
I'm getting to be an old fart, and I've always been one to toss the old when the next new thing came out. Thank you for these walks down memory lane. Keep up the good work!
I used almost that exact model of backpack drive when I was in high school... I went to a computer camp during the summer, and we had one of those that we'd take around to all of the computers to use in turn... Mostly to burn CDs of PowerPoint choose your own adventures we made (this was right after hyperlink support was included in PowerPoint haha)
