LGBT in Poland: I still can't be myself - BBC News

Large parts of Poland were labelled "LGBT-free zones", where regional governments, as well as smaller councils, declared they were against LGBT ideology or ideologies that “undermine” the family.
Now, provinces have started to backtrack after the EU said it would freeze funds.
But has anything really changed for LGBT people in those areas?

@@ABanRocks I mean, you're okay with your decision, but you can't possibly speak for an entire nation. I've seen people express regret after they realised what Brexit actually meant and the actual repercussions of the decision. COVID is covering up the actual fallout and compounding it as well. When the dust clears, people will have a better sense of the true impact. As for the propaganda, yeah that was a real thing. People with certain agendas pumped up Brexit for their own gains and people bought into it, not fully realising that the promises made were for the most part kinda hollow since exiting the EU doesn't actually mean you fully stop payment and immediately get control of your borders, and immediately iron out stuff with fishing and trade etc.

@@Ceeeeee451 this is 1% of the marginal society. How can you go out with a poster to stop the war against fascism? The United States and NATO countries staged a real fascist regime from Ukraine (as in Germany under Hitler). And under the full approval of the hypocritical West, they staged a real genocide against Russians in Ukraine. Ukraine is a native Russian land, with separatist actions in the 90s they created their own state. And after the armed coup in 2014, the entire government became pro-American puppets. In Ukraine, all media outlets that could provide information different from the government's point of view were immediately turned off. Mass repressions of all those who disagree with the American occupation began. Nazi battalions did things that the state could not officially do, such as torture, murder, etc. All these 8 years, the NATO gang has been actively arming Ukraine, hundreds of tons of weapons have been delivered... NATO instructors, etc. This is a NATO war against Russia by the hands of Ukrainians. Ukraine has a 0% chance of winning, but for NATO, Ukrainians are meat for solving geopolitical interests and weakening Russia. So those who are coming out now with posters saying "no to war" are accomplices of fascism. In the EU, 99% of people simply do not know what Ukraine is and the essence of the conflict (they were misinformed in the media), and those who come out with posters in Russia - they know everything, but in most cases they make such speeches for money. The United States spends from 2 to 5 billion dollars a year on propaganda in Russia... (sponsoring the media, bloggers, activists, shooting incorrect historical films, etc.). 90% of citizens are in favor of these people with posters not just being fined, but given long prison terms.

Just my two cents, I lived for 5 years in small town Poland as a gay man (from the UK) and maybe I'm completely oblivious but I never actually encountered or saw any open homophobia aside from a few comments here and there. I knew loads of gay Polish people and they seemed happy enough and when they moved to bigger cities they lived quite normally. I mean yeah, it isn't a good idea to hold hands in public or run around with a rainbow flag, but 30 years ago in Spain you would have got your head kicked in for that, now it's one of the most LGBT tolerant countries in the world. I was fairly open about my sexuality, I didn't go announcing it to everyone I met but I didn't hide it either if anyone asked me, and nobody was bothered. I actually found the Poles generally very curious and surprisingly open minded considering the negative reputation they get in the West (especially after a drink) ANYWHO I still miss Poland and the Poles every day, a beautiful country with fantastic people ❤

Teaching in school might be useful for lgbt kids, not for converting straight kids. How to protect yourself, are there psychologist available for your situation. There are kids absolutely confused and mutilate themselves or end up in dangerous situations because they get thrown out of homes or don't know how to handle themselves. These are realistic problems. These things could be taught for example like a simple sex education lesson that is not obligatory and just informative for ones who need it. (thats the most i can think about the school involvement) You should know that in many countries LGBT people can't marry, adopt each other children and are facing physical and mental violence. I have no clue what is going on in US or Canada, since a white male now is automatically an oppressor. Everything has a line, Thing is that most countries don't have even basics.

The anti "phobia" laws criminalize being "afraid" of someone. This does not promote tolerance but empowers snitching which goes against Polish tradition of free society where each person can express their views respectfully without harming others and without fear of personal prosecution for her/his/their views. May I what you mean, specifically, by 'woke'? 'Woke' is inherently apolitical. It refers to having an unusually large amout of factual knowledge as to how large systems, entities, bureaucracies, businesses, intstitutions, etc. function, who benefits from them and who does not. With that is implied an awareness that these systems are large and impersonal and that both unearned advantage and discrimination frequently are NOT the result of individual people sitting behind a desk plotting and planning. So..... yeah, 99% of the time the word is used incorrectly in the media. Actually the most popular definition of 'woke' now seems to be 'whatever I don't like at this particular moment in time'. That's why I asked😊.

@@peacefulnatural I didn't say PHYSICALLY forcing them. You added that part on to make my argument seem weaker. By forcing in this context I meant requiring an LGBTQ+ person to hide their identity in general. For example, a young LGBTQ+ person might need to stay closeted because they know that their parents will kick them out if they come out as LGBTQ+. Another example is LGBTQ+ people needing to hide that aspect of themselves at work, as coming out could get them fired, due to a lack of protection from discrimination. Neither of these examples are physical, but the LGBTQ+ person would put their livelihood or safety at risk by coming out. I also noticed how the original comment frames LGBTQ+ relationships as exclusively sexual. While I'd agree that you shouldn't talk about your sexual lives around people who are not comfortable with it, LGBTQ+ people are usually not doing that. A man talking about his boyfriend is not any inherently more sexual or imposing of his beliefs than a man talking about his girlfriend.

Poland joined the EU. Areas in Poland said lgbtq people aren't allowed to settle there. This is against the EU right. You can't deny a EU citizen to live or work somewhere inside of the EU unless he is a covicted terrorist or criminal. It's that simple and Poland knew the rules when it entered. The EU did so much for Poland, it's infrastructure and it's economy. They can't just take that money but deny people to live freely and not obey by the rules...
