LG washing machine top-rear vent leaking water. Leak from the back. Fix or preventive maintenance

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is my second LG washing machine, last one was a 2008, and this one a 2019.
Both had trouble with the top/back tub-vent leaking in certain conditions. Usually it's when the load is too big, there's too much soap (or wrong type of soap; use "he" soap).
In all cases the mushroom-valve is supposed to prevent water from exiting through this vent.
This video present both a fix and a preventive maintenance to this issue; don't wait for a leak!
Any lubricant that's fluid enough yet will resist being washed out by water will do.
If your valve is too worn, consider changing it!

I've had 3 different LG certified appliance repair guys come look at my washer in the last 3 years and not a single one of them even suggested to open up the top of the washer to investigate because the unit is stacked. I was told to use less detergent and switched to HE pods to control the amount of detergent. Thanks for the video, this explanation makes so much sense. Looks like I'll be fixing it myself.

@ Northern Handy Dad, thank you so much for this vid! I already had a case # opened from LG and I had cancelled it. I have 2-yr. old LG front load washer and after a wash cycle for only 1x king-sized blanket, water came out of the floor on the right front side (facing the washer). I opened the top cover, no trace of leaks. I opened the back panel and there is water on the floor on the left side (facing the machine from behind). There is no traces of water dripping from it's components. The accordion rubber hoses are all good. Then I came to investigate the air vent from LG's youtube vid where common leaks could come from. So I did your fix and lubed the mushroom plunger...and did the 2nd king-sized blanked and not even a trace of water beneath the floor. You're God-sent! Kudos again for helping lots of people who watched this vid. 😊😊

Thanks for the helpful video along with the mechanics of how the mushroom valve works. I paid a repair guy $69 bucks for him to tell me to "use less detergent." He had the washer taken apart and all he had to do was the simple fix that you showed here but I guess he didn't know or didn't care. Should have just come to youtube to start with. Anyway, this was a great video. Clear and to the point. Thanks again.

My brand new LG Washing Machine had this same issue with a slight leaking from the rear vent. This video was exactly what I needed, and the fix worked perfectly. The mushroom valve in mine was stuck in place, so I had to use a flat blade screw driver to gently nudge it out. Since my WM is brand new I thought maybe it just needed to be loosened up after shipment, so I tried putting it back in to see if it would move up and down easily, but it was stuck again. I used the O-Ring lube and then it was moving freely like in the video. I have checked a few times and no more leaks. Thank you for posting this video.

Just wanted to say thanks for your video - I've been fighting with this thing on and off for a couple of years. I appreciated your diagram - it made me think a bit further. This time I tried adding lubricant (like you did) and also thoroughly wiped out the inside of the rubber hose where the "mushroom" contacts it. Hoping for success at last...

I'm so glad I found your video!!! My front-loading Kenmore 796.4027 is leaking from the rear air vent. I was suspect of this being the cause of my intermittent water issue, but it was just confirmed today after I bought leak detectors which alerted me at the time of the leak during the spin cycle when I witnessed a decent amount of water coming from this vent. I only hope that when I take it apart, it is as easy as your LG model!! Thank you for your informative video!!!! 👍

Thank you for this video. Very clear indeed. I have my LG front-loading Washer apart because I have to replace the spider bracket and the bearings. Since I have it apart I'll certainly check out the tub vents and lubricate them as you did. Perhaps a helpful hint - no need to remove the cover bracket and upper screw, simply remove the lower screw and the cover will slide with brackets in place... fewer parts to keep track of.

I just followed your instructions which are great, but I discovered the real cause for my leakage at the air vent was due to excessive lint/gunk build up inside the rubber boot on the surface which the mushroom valve is supposed to shut off against. I cleaned this surface and all back together and working.

Better off using the warranty! I don't think it could gum up in only three days anyway. Problem is probably elsewhere for yours. But just to make sure: are you using the "he" soap and not using too much of it? Using wrong detergent or in too large quantities could lead to such problem.

Thanks for this. It's providing a clue to my problem perhaps. I have an LG ventless (combo washer dryer wm3998hba). During drying it puts out A LOT of humidity (along with some smell, like slight burning of lint maybe?). Repair tech came and decided to replace the heating unit-saying it was too hot. But that did not solve the problem. Can wash and dry fine. But we don't dry due to the smell, which I'm pretty sure is releasing some particulates. From other forums, I now understand that this tub vent you showed is likely where the humidity might be coming from, and IMO may be related to the smell as well. And there is indeed a dry stain of soap/water that I see. It's been recommended that we put a lot less HE Detergent, so may try that. But do you think the humidity is related to a problem with the mushroom part?

So I managed to do this repair through the rear. Could barely reach it through the big panel, but I removed the supply hoses, and the top two screws holding the supply connection plate on, pushed it into the washer, and removed one wire clip so I could get in there. If you have small arms, you'll do much better than I did. The hose clamp has plilips head, and a 7mm nut driver worked also. My mushroom was dry too. Used some dielectric pouch for spark plug boots I had lying around.

yeah, ya' gotta clean the gunk out of the whole unit, top to bottom. Use a small bottle brush on the tubes. Also, on the floor of the tray under the tube that sits over the smaller one there are little plastic nubbies that keep the syphon tube a tiny bit above the floor of the tray which is what allows the syphon to draw the water up and over and down. The fabric softener is also thicker than the water so ya' gotta' keep that clean as well.

Hi! Allow me answer this in reverse order! 2) I would recommend NOT using a thin oil like 3in1. It will be washed away pretty quickly and may even stain your clothes when dripping down. 1) I don't think this can void warranty. Mine is also still under warranty and I was never worried to do this. Since you don't have a thicker, more viscous oil, I suggest you do this as a first step: A) Open up the thing and try to clean up the valve shaft. In the process, check what may have caused it to stick; or even if it has to be replaced under warranty! B) Soap suds can gum the valve. Try doing a "Tub clean" cycle with either bleach or special purpose cleaner (I'm using this one: amzn.to/3sfx6xr). Check on KZread or Google for "Washer Tub Cleaning". This will remove suds that's located on the outside of the drum/tub, which may case stickiness on the valve. C) Make sure you're using only "HE" soap (High-efficiency), and in small quantities when it's possible. Good luck!

3-in-1 oil is oil-based. Oil eats rubber, and this may result in a very bad day. Never use it, WD40, etc on rubber parts. O-ring lube is silicone and water-based and safe on rubber.

15 year old LG WM0642HW here. Just started doing this leak about 2 months ago, but very infrequently. I have the service manual and the flowchart for this is comical. Are you using Low Suds soap? Yes. Are you using the correct amount? Yes. Use less soap. Note, there is nothing beyond that. Going to give this a go and see what happens. However, if the mushroom needs to be replaced, does anyone have a part number? I can't find it on LG's parts site nor Repair Clinic. It almost looks like they want you to buy the entire plastic outer tub assembly. Also will have to look into new shock absorbers soon...

Hi! Have you tried a tub clean? Sometimes there's lint and dried suds in between the drum and assembly. I have recommended a product for that in the description. Also someone reported me in the comments that the rubber boot the valve pushes against may be dirty or misaligned. That would make a poor seal when the tub is spinning.

I tried a tub clean after the first filter clean, (which really wasn't too dirty at all), but got another OE code before it finished the cycle. So I cleaned up the water on on the floor, pulled the filter again, this time removing the round rubber gasket and really cleaning it as well as the threads on the washer itself where it attaches. ran a test rinse and spin, and presto, not a drop of water anywhere and the next wash cycle I tried with the towels I mopped up previously worked smoothly. 13 yrs. old and currently working /washing again, so far. good vids!
