I've had this unit for 7 years and have been taking the lint out from the top every year or so. This time, with the help of my hero-boyfriend, I went full-on, as you showed, and cleaned the machine out from the back. A ton of lint came out and it was very satisfying. Thanks for posting!

Thank you for this video - but I want to say I only used the part one video and hand cleaned and stuck a plastic toothed drain cleaner gizmo (like you pull hair out of drains) and got out quite a LOT of old wet fluff. This was super easy so anybody that feels maybe they can't do this #2 part, you can get a lot with just the part one video and a plastic drain cleaner thing

I appreciate this video very much. Thank you for your wonderful demo and thank you for no music!!! My daughter had the LG Direct Drive Combo and it was not washing or drying properly. It was a huge dismantling to try to clean out the lint and I had had enough! Nothing should be engineered to make it impossible to clean without major surgery on the machine. That is a bad product. The fact is, that if you have a ventless dryer, or a combo machine, you will have this issue. Do not buy a combo machine or ventless dryer. They are built to break down and not fixable. Get two separate machines.

I also had the same problem. Instead of disassembling the back of the machine I used a "Turbo Snake", ( its a thick flexible wire with velcro on the end). I was able to clean it out from the top entrance of the drain air duct that way.

Where can you purchase the turbo snake ?

We just ordered a newer version of this online and I'm really glad I found this video so I know what to watch out for and stay on top of. Thanks for demonstrating this whole process so clearly!

Excellent- best part 1 and 2 videos on cleaning out the lint. I had followed others videos and cleaned all the TOP sections, not seeing much lint and putting it all back together. Your including the BOTTOM white plastic tube's clean out is the key to success. LG and other mfrs of combo w/d machines should invent a garden hose inlet washout with a lower drain port. This is the only negative of such machines- FINDING and cleaning out the lint. Thank you very much, very much.

I have a newer unit as well, and the bottom of the duct is a rubber arm that you can removed with a little screwdriver. This did the trick as there was a ton of lint was all piled up in that duct assembly. Thank you for sharing!!

How did we ever cope without Google / KZread. Although my LG washer / dryer is a different model to this one it is virtually identical internally and when it became very inefficient in its drying cycle I turned to KZread for clues. This particular video is just what I needed and I too found a truly huge amount of fluff/lint clogging up the airways. Thanks so much Leo for posting your video - I now have a full functioning machine again - fixed at zero cost!

Hi Leo, I was considering buying one but after reading and watching all the videos that are out there - all describing the lint problem, I am concerned.The unit would fit perfectly the space where I intend to keep it. I have one friend that used the unit for 6 years and she did not have this issue, but many do have it. The LG customer service told me that I need to run Tub Clean once a month. It supposed to wash all the lint. It not, it clogs the machine. This is terrible. As per the design, it also dumps all the lint in the drain, which may also not be so good for the drain. After this video, how often do you assembly/re-assembly the combo? It looks like it may take a long time. Thank you for your reply.

Basically, you would need to do this lint cleaning once every 18 months with heavy usage, and maybe once every 2-3 years with light usage. We have many kids, so we do a lot of laundry

Well i'm certainly not buying another LG unit with these ridiculous design problems built in from new. But since posting I HAVE cleaned out the lint and the dryer still only runs for fifteen minutes before this lousy unit dies with a DHe error. Whatever that means.

I can't thank you enough for these life-saving videos! I had this exact problem in the past few months with my unit (when I purchased it a year and a half ago, I had assumed they had corrected this terrible design flaw, but I was unfortunately wrong...cannot believe they made the air duct so INCREDIBLY inconvenient to access!), and NO ONE -- not even the LG authorized technicians -- would return my calls for repair/maintenance. Now I know why! I cannot be expected to spend a day of my life every single year of the life of this unit to do this disassembly. Worst purchase decision ever (and a costly one, too). This was my first LG purchase, and this makes me never want to buy an LG product ever again. I have written the company to complain, and we'll see if they reply. Now my solution is to have to buy a separate dryer and only use this as a washer. :( Whatever the case, I am SO grateful that you helped me protect our family's life as I'm afraid it could have eventually led to a fire and/or the unit completely breaking down if I hadn't discovered your video. Of course, because I'm a novice, I caused more problems than I solved. After I "fixed" the clogged condensation tank, we then had a leak, which our appliance guy fixed today, but now the clothes are sopping wet at the end of the "more dry" cycle. Seems like spin cycle draining isn't happening correctly... Ugh. I regret the day I ever bought this thing and can't believe it gets such good reviews!

@@question7841 I was extremely diligent about monthly cleanings. It is simply terribly designed as the cleanings don't clean the condensation tank where lint builds up.

Lisa, I agree with you about the design of this combo unit, horrible design. The issue is that it is ventless, which means the lint stays in - and that is the cause of the problems. Design is so bad, it is non functional. However, all LG products are not bad. You just have to know how to fix them. If you have a choice, get a separate large size washer and dryer. Those are easy to clean and fix. I've never needed a repair person. I visit KZread, and figure it out. How hard can it be? If you have birthed a kid, raised a kid, and managed a husband, you are more than qualified to fix a washer dryer! Don't be afraid to open things up, as long as they are unplugged and you remember the way it looked first - photos help. Its great to buy an electric screwdriver. Dewalt makes a nice one Model 887, called an Impact Driver. Use this to open up the machine covers. Manual screwdrivers will drive you nuts.

Yes, we ended up spending twice as much to get a Miele dryer now, which we absolutely adore, and only use the piece of trash LG as a washer. Much happier now (except for our wallet). Never want to waste a whole day having to open and clean out that thing again.

Very grateful for your excellent video! I needed to see this. My daughter's combo washer dryer does not dry anything. I opened up the back and top but did not know what else to check. i know its a lint buildup but could not find the source. Now I know, many thanks!!!!!!💖💖💖 PS- LGs have a ridiculous design.

Lass, LG has a "lint removal port" at the bottom of the unit... But for some reason, lint always goes into duct, and this "port" is always clean/empty... It is a major design flaw - i agree... However this washer / drier is a life saver for people with limited space... It doesn't even require outside venting. They just need to add lint collector that is accessible from the front or top

Thanks for the video which has just helped my fix my LG washer/dryer which is now working perfectly after removing tons of lint!. Just to let you know, my machine also shows the "CD" code - it is normal and is the "cool down" cycle once it has finished the dry stage. Hope this helps and thanks again for the video!

+Donald Kalleck no. per the manual, it stands for "cool down" and is basically the "hold" cycle that comes on after the wash dry cycle are done. It supposedly just sort of stops the clothes from getting wrinkled in the machine before you get them out. even though it doesn't do that very well if at all.

Fantastic help - thank you! I have an LG 8kg/6kg Washer Dryer Combo (Model F14A8YD, late 2015) and had been noticing a burnt smell (almost like burnt lint) and couldnt figure it out. Like other comments on here, I thought it strange that the filter at the bottom right side of the unit never seemed to need much cleaning (very little lint/gunge in there, maybe a table spoon at most). I had a feeling the smell was burning lint somewhere, so took the unit top off and removed the covers on the heating element and fan motor (similar design to in this video pretty much) and found my heating element and the fan full of almost a handful of lint, some of which had wrapped itself around the heating elements and was indeed burnt! Havent taken the entire beige/plastic heating air duct out but stuck wire down into it to try to get as much out as i could, and thoroughly cleaned the fan and heating elements (everything unplugged, cooled down and off - just reassembled the seals as they were). Will see if it works, but so far so good. Its incredibly dangerous to have lint burning on the heating element like that. If this smell is still a problem after i disassemble the air duct and clean it as best I can, I will post here. The hose that was disconnected in this video is actually the cooling water hose, on mine it comes over from the water inlet connection (there are 3 small pumps there, other two are detergent + fabric softener i suspect) and you can feel its working if its cold to the touch relative to the other two - then cold water is at least circulating. Will try to clean that corner too, it had crazy lint in it! A lint fire in my 3 unit wooden home here would have not been fun at all!

ok seems like on my model F14A8YD LG washer dryer combo the air duct is almost identical, with the exception that there is a sensor near the top (likely the eco features, perhaps a thermometer/humidity sensor), fitted through a hole with a gasket. You can just pull it through, and push it back through again with a little bit of effort and something like a pen, just dont tear/puncture it. My air duct was also full of clumps of lint. After washing it out completely, it seems fine now - more so than just clearing the fan and heater out - no smoke according to my super crazy sensitive smoke detectors, I sniffed all around it. I would advise to run a rinse cycle and make sure the seal at the bottom of the air duct is good, otherwise it will leak water into the base of the unit, onto some electronics and your floor! otherwise its easy enough. Hopefully I wont have to do this every year, just maybe take the top off and check the fan and heating elements. Hope this helps someone else! Thanks again

I have a 2021 model and I though I’d take a look. They somewhat improved the process - there’s an extra hose running from the water inlet directly down the air intake pipe, and it periodically sprays water down there during the drying process. Whether it does the job, idk. The black heater manifold and the vent top cap is glued together, so I didn’t pry it off being almost brand new. We’ll see over time if this water spraying prevent lint build up…

So CD means it's just Cooling Down, it's normal and keeps the clothes tumbling to prevent wrinkles. It's not an error notice. I wonder if stopping the machine during cool down prevented lint from being expelled with the dry air.

it is advisable to take it apart as on mine there was not only masses of lint in the plastic box, but where the mouth of the box connects to the drum, mine was also blocked there, so "fishing" for lint would not have totally fixed mine

Holy crap!!!! All that to clean lint!!!! I will never buy a combo washer dryer. I'm vacationing at a place that uses this unit and my clothes won't dry. I thought it was a simple process to remove lint but I'm not gonna do all this at all especially that it's not my unit and I don't want to mess with someone else's stuff.

I've cleaned the lint out of the top, and out of the back. I've replaced the water pump. It still leaves the clothes hot and damp. What else is there to clean out? The hose, maybe?

If you are in a bind for time try accessing this vent from the top and "fish" the lint out with a long drain tool. I dig what you did here though. That sucker is clean! Problem solved.

I tried to fish stuff out, but it did not work very well For some stupid reason - the DRAIN and debri filter is ALWAYS clean and all the f*n lint goes into air duct

I don't see how you could run a hose down the air duct and then flush the machine itself? I cleaned my WT745's lower ducts a few times this way, and as it's a Miele the rear end cannot be removed, the entire machine is one piece with a hinging front panel.

There's a rubber stopper which must be reinserted into a small hole in the back of the lint chamber. You skipped this step. We are finding it nearly impossible to pop that back in.

I already had this unit in my apartment - this was better option that throwing it away. And I had no space for a dryer

Because the machine is hot it means "cool down" period, its a safety feature that takes about 20 mins, also helps with the creases, it is not an error code

Good video! Thanks. I have the same LG unit and I cleaned without removing the white plastic box. I used flexible house (~0.5 inch) diameter attached with tape to the vacuum cleaner. It works perfectly and saves a lot of time. Thanks.

Do you know if the newer LG combo units have this disastrous lint buildup problem in the dryer section of the unit? Did they make removal/cleaning out that white 'bottle' any easier?

Hey so since there's no Lint Trap, how can you clean lint out? What can you do for maintaining less lint?? Also how do you hook it up to the under sink DRAIN? Do you do attach the drain after or before the sinks' P-Trap?

+user3251 - the best I came up with is to take top off once / year and remove the lint like I show in this video - should not take more than 1 hour. Drain hookup "was" there from previous owners. I think it's hooked up after sink p-trap ...basically the drain hose goes inside the wall - so I don't know 100%

When you took off the manifold you said that you broke the gasket. When I removed mine it had deteriorated and broke off with the mani. Tried to follow your link for parts on Amazon, can’t find the replacement. Any suggestions? I’m guessing if it doesn’t have the gasket then water will leak into the rest of the unit....

Wow good lookin out man great video ill know what to do now in this situation .

LOLOL- If I did that, my machine would be on the floor in pieces forever. My machine is working, but I can tell lint is building up on the glass. I don't want to wait for it to stop working. it's a brand new model and if it's yearly maintenance, I have a few months to figure out how to do this without taking it apart. lol :)

that's easy - they want you to have this fixed by LG certified repair shops, and eventually to buy new (LG) machine. Because there is very little choice, LG is practically the only such unit (compact all-in-one) sold by Home Depot & Lowe's, that you are almost guaranteed to buy another LG And by looking at comments to this video, this lint problem is not limited to just my model, but also to newer models as well ... so I guess they are not good at using customer feedback for product improvements ...

it is outrageous for this machine ti have a tiny lint filter at the bottom that catches nothing!

Leo, is there anything you can do to prevent this lint accumulation such as TubClean? That is what LG told me to do. Do we really have to disassemble the machine every year to remove access of lint? Holy cr... !!! I am evaluating buying a unit like this but after watching this video and some other ones on KZread about the lint problem, I am concerned. I have a limited space and a single unit would work great, but this kind of maintenance is a nightmare. By the way, you video is great.

I tried this and it all seemed to go smoothly, but when I put it back together there is steam coming out of the softener compartment in the front drawer. I am guessing I broke a seal somewhere, but I took it all apart again and put it carefully back together, but still the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

the CD stands for "cool down" it will cool the dryer down after each cycle to stop any from opening the door and getting burnt

We did this and now are washer/dryer is leaking from the bottom. Any ideas?

There is a lint clean out in the bottom left corner on the front of the washer. It's rather useless but maybe it's not properly sealed and that's where leak is coming from. See if you can open it and reseal it

i took the top off mine and found a massive bar of gold blocking mine.... cheers!

So, couldn't you reach that tough one through the access hole you have unplugged there?

CHOICE Home Warranty refuses to pay to repair the non-drying machine. They're calling it customer maintenance. LG does not list this as a user-serviceable maintenance item. The unit doesn't dry.

Home warranty is a waste of money ... I'm not sure what to tell you besides - try to fix it yourself or hire someone who can OR return if possible.

@@RemodelCalculator My Edge star unite is 4 years....I have to run the heat cycling 3 times to dry it.....when the Time reaches 1 hour 45 minutes it will immediately drop to 30 minutes.....I have never cleaned the tubes they said should be,checked once a year....

why not just remove the fan from heater and put a hose in it and run the water, any lint will come out of the button trap!

I'm not sure where bottom trap is :) ... I agree there is no need to take out white plastic piece ... just next time i think instead of water you can remove fan and use a wire with hook to pull the lint up ...

That much lint will plug the drain hoses and drain pump if you tried hose it out. You just push the problem “downstream”.

Why in the world would any one buy this machine!!!! To get the lint out you almost have to take the whole thing apart!!!
