    I like minimalistic designs and stay away from all the gamer stuff. Especially since all of it is plastic and thus, inevitably, looks cheap. Some plastics can look pretty good, true, but I'd really like aluminium more. Simple shapes endure, too. Like designs from Apple, starting from early 2010s. They do not look like they're from early 2010s, they still look good even now. Gamer stuff? That will eventually grow outdated, just like all-glass cases already have.

At this moment it is still too early to play competitive games in 4K and LG has unveiled an all in one solution that could solve the problem of those who, like me, find themselves in the middle ground, torn between the choice of image quality of 4K and the fluidity of Full HD at a high refresh rate. I tend to agree, but I'm also used to playing competitive games on a 27" 1440p monitor. I don't love the idea of dropping resolution and PPI even though I really want an OLED monitor with high refresh rate. DLSS is good enough that I'd rather use that to get 4K resolution than this solution, but bandwidth starts becoming an issue at high refresh rates

  • @3rd.world.eliteAJ

    @@thedofflin Honestly the issue for me is that the refresh rates are just too high. Barely any game is going to push 240 frames at 4k even with a 4090, and having tried the 540Hz PG248QP at my friends house, I couldn't tell the difference between it and my 360Hz monitor.. Hopefully LG or someone releases a middle ground 120Hz 4k & 360Hz 1080p, not being able to utilize the full refresh rate on a monitor would just be too frustrating for me and considering the hardware to run at those frames won't be out for another year at least, it just seems like a novelty feature that you can point your finger at saying that you've got it.

    Those OLED monitors are becoming more and more attractive. The only issues for me would be: - For WOLED monitors: No glossy finish or similar like gorilla glass, colors are less vibrant than QD-OLED. - For QD-OLED monitors: Magenta tint when there is light in front of the monitor, text clarity isn't as good as WOLED with a 1440p resolution. - For both technologies: We still need better brightness especially for 10% and 100% windows but we are slowly getting there.

    Subpixel layout has been the #1 reason for me to not go OLED, as staring at text while web browsing etc is something i spend much larger % of my time than i do gaming. If you mostly use it in SDR mode during desktop use I think you'll be fine for many years. This monitor tops out at 1300nits during HDR I think, so in comparison the ~260 nits max in SDR means the heat dissipation and individual pixels aren't pushed even near their limit and thus have a huge headroom before any burn-in might happen.

  • @TheCabIe

    @TheCabIe

    No monitor will last 5 years without some sort of degradation at those type of hours, especiallly not OLED. Personally the only reason I'd go OLED would be because of good burn-in warranty because otherwise their long-term price may easily be 2x, if not more, their initial price because burn-in is a "when" not "if". Like, the new gen OLEDs are in ~1k$ price range and that sounds great compared to higher end IPSs, but if you can't get a guaranteed burn-in coverage and may have to get a new one after potentially 2 years, it would mean their ACTUAL price is 2k$ compared to 1k$ LCD that would last you 4 years. If you have the money OLED is almost strictly superior to LCDs, but you really have to take the burn-in calculation into account for your budget.

Though its usage comes in bursts, like when a new game comes out. Dragon dogma 2 is easily gonna get me to use it. :D OLED makes older games pop and look good, so I find it very satisfying for gaming and I enjoy it for movies too.

  • @fotografalexandernikolis

    @fotografalexandernikolis

    @@TheCabIe Yes I've even seen IPS panels get yellowing and bad uniformity after extremely heavy use (not by myself though lol). The argument could also be made that while these OLEDs potentially have a shorter lifespan, you're guaranteed to have superior image quality for all the time before that. It's quite interesting when you think about it, people are so afraid of the slim potential of OLED burn-in that they're buying IPS monitors that already have 'degraded' visual quality to start with (darkness glow, backlight bleed, uniformity issues etc). Instead of buying an OLED that literally has perfect image quality with the potential risk of issues after many years. An OLED with a tiny bit of burn-in will still have better image quality during gaming than any IPS, if the burn-in is limited to the edges where the UI is.

We know it can do brighter white but less saturated colors, so how does that pan out in real-world scenarios? Also how is the panel coating? Does its graininess detract from the 4K fidelity? @Who-Uhm-Cares can't argue with that...i'm also interest in that panel...till Monitor Unboxing said it lacking behind 4k 240hz panel. Plus, i never expect to go over 300fps in tripple A titles (which i played) the max i can get from my pc is 200fps on fhd. So 240fps vs 360hz means not too much as a deal breaker. So does 1440p vs 4k. But as an owner of 360hz fhd aw2521h, i'm guarantees you that sooner or later you will find out that resolution will be quickly out date by gpu generation and upgrade path. I'm not a fan of huge monitor either vs my pc is quite in a stage of bottleneck (not that bad but have no plan to upgrade it for couple of years) so yeah...i will spend a bit more for 4k 240hz.

    Might get this. Seems pretty solid at what it's trying to do. Not sure I'm patient enough to be waiting for the 39 or 45 inch 5K2K 21:9 version, that might even not have dual-mode. I like playing immersive single player or more on the relaxing coop games too and then 21:9 is ideal so long as I can set a 16:9 mode for competitive games. Ideally by now ultra & superwide screens would have Picture By Picture with no downsides so one could play 16:9 with a long sidescreen for whatever when desired, but they still halve the refresh rates in PBP mode for some reason. I really thought we'd be further along now. I remember a dual-mode 4K-1080p monitor was implemented and sold as kits as far back as 2017 by the engineer Zisworks as a hobby project. The industry is very slow at adding conveniences that are already well figured out how to do.

    I really hope this feature becomes standard across more of LG's 4K monitors. Even if it's just a bump from 4K 60 up to 1080p 240 that would still be awesome. I'm not a resolution snob in games but I prefer 4K for the desktop experience so I can use scaling for super sharp text and video. I would love to be able to switch over to 1080 mode for gaming and get the higher refresh rate and higher frame rate by dropping the resolution. It's just such a great idea and totally makes sense to do on a 4K panel with the way the pixels naturally scale.
