Out here in australia the area in which i lived once was a very large vegetable growing area and i can assure you the paddocks were covered with nothing but leylands and david browns they were very well liked for their ploughing ability

A guy on the then Leyland Tractors stand at the English " Royal Show " ( now shut down for a railway ! ) once told me that they used a de-tuned lorry engine for these " Heavyweights " , being 85 or 100 H.P. then , the same engine was used , although tuned up a bit & turbo,d where neccessary , in the last of the big Gainsborough built Marshalls , 100 & 125 , I was once offered a slightly famous 125 - 4wd , I wish I,d bought it , it had been James Nickerson,s on his Lincolnshire farm . As a footnote , a lifelong mate told me the Leyland straight 6,s could have been got built as 4W.D. , by the Bathgate factory loading the ordered consignment up , & transporting them to County Commercial Cars , Fleet , Aldershot , Hants , who then converted them to work with their style of transmission being driven constantly from each back 1/2 shaft , unstoppable ploughing , but terrible transmission wind - up on the road , but , what an engine ! & the guy below,s right , tremendous pulling power from uniquely balanced hydraulics . Happy Spanners !

At Charnley,s , the excellent storeman , Mike , who is now dead , once told me they had developed a much tougher clutch assembly to replace the original fitment clutch in the middleweights with , due to blokes like me ripping the middle straight out of the original ones doing hard work , ( the engine , gearbox & hydraulics stood it all , for 41 years ! , but I trashed many a clutch , big baling ). I have never seen one , but anybody needing to replace a Leyland or perhaps early Marshall clutch should talk to the new storeman or one of the engineers at Charnley,s , for me , this is the weak point on a Leyland ....... R.I.P. Mike , I never met him face to face , but a most knowledgeable chap & always polite , on the phone .

Hi there rob, I have bought a 285 last week and it needs a few things doing to it. It needs a new slave cylinder for the brakes, any idea where to find one? Also the steering is vague and wanders all over the road. I also need some more cab glass for the back, where should I look for that? Lastly I wanted to know if the transmission wineing was common as my one is deafening in top gear even at slow speeds. Would be great if u could point me in the right direction I'm 16 and want a tidy tractor for road runs so just need to fix my one up,Cheers Miles

@@MASSYMADMAN The Ford 7000 was overrated really. A chap I know had both a 7000 and a Zetor Crystal 8011 (!) and he said the Zetor was the better puller
