@@baker1352 That was Bottas's first year at Mercedes man, and they had agreed to let Lewis past to see if he could catch Vettel because they were fighting for the championship, when Hamilton couldn't catch him he let Bottas back into his place, Bottas hadn't spent years being slaved around in Mercedes because he wasn't there

@@baker1352oh zip it I’d say 90% of the time Mercedes calls were justified since Hamilton either needed the points for the championship or was approaching at seconds quicker a lap than Bottas. And in this case Hamilton needed the points even more since he was behind Vettel in the Championship + he gave up on a podium Whereas verstappen had already won, it was no podium and no other driver pushing from behind and Perez needing the points for P2…

I remember this race very well. It was the team spirit that really shone that day and I’m still so proud of this team for that. Love it!

Even Niki didn’t approve of Lewis giving back the position to Bottas, because he said he was afraid that Lewis could need those points at the end of the championship. Well Lewis was raised by parents who has honor and dignity.

Lewis understands that giving the spot back reflects great on him too. If there is something lewis is very aware of while driving its the publics reception.. he could be more aware of other cars in racing situations though. 😂 Max is a racer not a social media guru.. and apparent from that checo situation max made it clear to the team that he will never give up a position. (either still mad at checo for his monaco dirty play or principally)

@@dco1019 Whether it's for publicity or not is beside the point. He's simply demonstrating the qualities of a respectful individual. This action reflects his respect for Bottas as well. He informed the team that he would relinquish the position if he couldn't pass Raikkonen, and he followed through on his commitment. It's a testament to his integrity and reliability. Max is childish, he is only aware of himself. And that's all there is to it really 😂.

@@WarayF1 ok, but 1, there also wasnt any discussion like this prior to max taking the position. if they really wanted those points to be checo's then GP made a bit of an oopsie not conveying this to max...and 2) max held a grudge vs checo for robbing him of the win in monaco. lewis doesnt have a grudge vs bottas why would he? thats his right hand man wouldnt even dare to challenge him. Perez is a much more combative and ambitious driver.

Hard to compare raw talent across generations when debating the goat, but 4 major things stand in lewis’s favour for claim to that title. 1 - statistics, they dont lie. 2 - the duration of his time at the top, matched only by schumacher, 3 - the calibre of his opponents, matched only by prost, 4 - his sense of honour and stature as a good role model

I’m a Verstappen fan, but this is the Lewis I want to see and hear again! Peak performance, driven and motivated to the core! Given a decent car this would bring back some epic action!

Here we have a driver who was fighting every point for the world championship returning the position back to his teammate while there is another driver in recent times refusing to let his teammate past despite already secured his world championship while his teammate was fighting for second

For added context, Hamilton was locked in a tight championship battle with Vettel, I believe they were tied on points entering this round of the championship. The fact that he gave back the position to Valteri showed everything there was to show about how Mercedes allowed both their drivers to be on equal footing while both had a realistic shot at the championship. In sharp contrast to Red Bull (and previously Ferrari) treats its drivers.

I've always felt that if Valterri's racecraft was as good as his qualifying pace (never missed Q3 in five years at Merc) he would be world class. It's just such a key part he's lacking.

It was team orders. Originally Bottas agreed to let Hamilton pass to try to catch Vettel but he didn't and the agreement was that Lewis would give the position back to Bottas since it was originally his.

But that was the same with verstappen and Perez last year in Brazil. Verstappen was o try and take points away from leclerc and failure to do so would mean letting Perez back through, which he didn’t do even though he had already won the championship. In contrast, Lewis was in a championship battle with seb and would’ve benefited from 3rd that race yet he still gave valterri the position back after not being able to beat the Ferraris.

@@dougalzombi That's great but team orders are still team orders, a driver is not "a nice guy" because they follow team orders. If they fail to follow the orders then there are penalties within the team structure. Prior to Abu Dhabi 2016 Hamilton was instructed not to slow down for any reason so as to keep both Mercedes ahead of the pursuing grid regardless if Rosberg was pushing to fight for the title. The penalty was that if either driver slowed intentionally the team would penalize them in the pits by purpksely making a slower pit stop. After his final pit Hamilton slowed down in an attempt to back Roseberg into the grid behind. He failed to follow team orders and was given a very stern warning from the team after the race was over. He had no choice in 2017 but to follow those orders because he put himself on thin ice for his actions at the close of 2016.

@@sFde46 In 2016 there were reports of Mercedes contemplating not renewing Hamilton's contract. However, the penalty could be financial if a driver signs a team contract that stimpulates financial penalties if orders are violated. They could also elect to put the reserve driver in Hamilton's car if they chose to, forcing him to sit out of the races. Penalties all depend onbthe team. Ferrari forbids their drivers from doing any outside activities from F1 racing while they are part of the team. Alonso stated how he was not allowed to go skydiving while he raced for Ferrari and explained they restricted (via contract) any activities outside of F1.
