My impression of Valteri is that he is that rarest of characters in F1 - Mr Nice Guy. He always appears modest, but quietly competent, and definitely under-rated in the eyes of most fans. I wish him all the best in his new role. I would not be surprised if he suddenly started to shine - it will depend what sort of backing he gets from his new team.

Correct me if I'm wrong. It was a bit before my time but... didn't he absolutely slay in the williams? Like he was the No1 in that team by a few solid places often pushing Mark Webber out of the podium spots or 4th place. I may be completely wrong but I was always told he was a bit of an Alonso by pushing his car beyond its place.

Lewis Hamilton genuine talent? Being consistent? Lewis Hamilton has lost all 4 championships that has an equal pace title winning car, to Raikkonen, Button, Rosberg and Verstappen. And his win in 2008 was a default win, after Raikkonen dominated the first 5 races and then had massive amount of problems with the car, leaving Massa to chase, that’s like, Verstappen winning while Hamilton was out and only Bottas to chase him and Verstappen only won by 1 point. Lewis Hamilton genuine talent is a disgrace in motorsport, completely and fully dependent on a title winning car and just be consistent, 7 time world champion WITHOUT an opponent, let’s be honest here, last year, winning under a yellow flag? Just admit that Perez was in worse condition with a more worn out tyre but managed to hold back Hamilton how many laps? And he can’t do one? Genuine talent right there. What Bottas said is beating him in the same car, but Rosberg did it, and Bottas replaced him, and seeing him getting that sort of treatment all those years, I’m pretty much consider the rest championships not worth mentioning because they are defaults wins not pressured by anyone.

@@ajstyles5704 like Hamilton or not, he is one of the most consistent and hard to beat teammates in F1. Rosberg retired early because he was afraid he wouldn't be able to continue to fight for the championship with Lewis. Lewis beat Rosberg the two years prior to Rosberg's win, in which Hamilton had more race wins and poles and only lost by 5 points even after reliability issues early that season. 2007 was Lewis' rookie year in which he still nearly won, and then became champion the next year. And Verstappen had the better car last year and still only won in the end because of a safety car. Car matters hugely, but that championship winning mentality is an asset that needs to be hand in hand. All of your arguments come from a place of resentment and painting in a bad light, not objectiveness. Context and wording do matter.

It appears to me that Lewis is Toto's 'golden boy' specifically because of his performance. Toto did say earlier that Lewis and George start off on equal grounds, and I lean towards believing him. It simply makes sense to see which driver delivers better in the beginning, and put more support behind him. If George can outdrive Lewis, I don't see Toto saying "no no no it has to be Lewis in front". Especially because unlike Valtteri, George is not there as a wingman. He is there as the replacement, the new generation.

I think anyone looking at objectively can understand why Merc treated their drivers as number 1 and number 2 - Bottas just wasn't on the same level. Same thing with Red Bull and Perez. Look at last season. Verstappen and Hamilton were far ahead of their teammates, underlining why their teams give them preferential treatment. As for Bottas and Merc - they gave him millions and a car that could win races. It's really all any driver could ask for; summed up by Bottas stating that he would have remained at Merc if they'd offered him a 2 year deal. They couldn't due to Russell so he left and looks to have landed a good car at Alfa. Wish the guy the best, but some of the narratives around him are driven by folks who have obvious issues with Merc/Hamilton.

It feels like the team isn't behind them - something that Bottas himself has spoken about fairly openly too. Glad to see Bottas driving for Alpha Romeo this year, my only concern was whether or not they’d give him a car to compete in the points after the last couple of season’s. From what I saw they have. Now it’s up him… hopefully zhou can help him out and they’ll do well. It doesn’t appear that mcclaren or Aston Martin are going to be pushing at anyones tail too hard. Maybe they’ll battle with Haas. That’d be a nice a nice change for both teams.

Valtteri is a talented driver but lacks consistency, too may times he wouldn't convert his qualifying into results and as of last week and the season's opening race that hasn't changed qualifying 5th and ending up 12th after the first lap. He was given a massive opportunity when he joined Mercedes and was only ever considered a second driver because he couldn't match Hamilton. Even as a defacto number two he did little to help Hamilton, even going as far as ignoring team orders in a couple of races when he had very little to lose and Hamilton had everything to gain. In the last season Hamilton invested in bigging Valtteri up, and Lewis was always gracious in the post-race interviews when Valtteri came out on front and would never complain when Bottas was told to not hold Hamilton up but did anyway. The only person to blame for Russel replacing Valtteri is Valtteri himself, he was often so far behind Hamilton that he didn't take points of Max Verstappen even when Max had 20 second penalties. The reason he was considered by onlookers to be the number two driver was because in the races it was always Hamilton and Verstappen way way out in front and Bottas stuck in the midfield. Up until the 2021 season Valtteri achieved the minimum as to what was asked of him, unable to match Hamilton he was runner up. But his last season he was of no help to Hamilton and his results almost cost Mercedes a manufacturers world championship so Mercedes switching to Russell proved to be the right call. When he left, Mercedes gave Valtteri a warm sending off which I don't think he earned. He was handed a world championship car and he failed, not because of Mercedes treating him as a number two but because he was too inconsistent. Nice guy but he can often match Alonso for blaming others for any lack of success.

I believe the Mercedes team starts each of the earlier 5 years giving equal opportunity to both drivers. However, it always became obvious quite early in each year, that Bottas will always be less abled than Hamilton, and thus to secure the driver's championship each year, they have to prioritise one driver, unless they want to lose that championship like what happened with Hamilton's and Alonso's year together at Mclaren. Bottas says so himself, that Hamilton is at another level. Hamilton is certainly better than Bottas for all the 5 years. If Bottas could not engineer a special year like what Rosberg did, when he had beaten Hamilton, then Bottas is also poorer than Rosberg. What's more is there to say?

Uncalled for. If you are consistently beaten by your team-mate, you either have to accept that they are the better driver and concentrate on your role as wing-man, or you can resort to blaming the team. He couldn't even come up with concrete examples of bias - he had to claim it was "unconscious". As for the Russian GP, you're being paid £££ millions to support the team. He's not the first driver to be asked to give way for the good of the campaign. He really should get over it... He's a very good driver - he's just not an all-time great. Seems that he can't live with that and is looking for someone to scapegoat.

How many times did that end with Hamilton crossing the finish line 20 seconds or more ahead of Bottas? If Bottas was faster and the position swap was made purely to cater to Hamilton, then Bottas should have been on Hamilton’s gearbox at the end of the race every time. That was simply not the case. I like Bottas, but he didn’t show the performance necessary to be treated as an equal, and so he wasn’t.
