  • @sienaoverland

    @sienaoverland

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Rick and no, none of us on this trip have an e-diff. As the terrain response has advanced it has improved and improved to the extent that you can do an amazing amount without an e-diff. However there are low-traction situations where the e-diff really shines and an e-diff equipped vehicle is smoother (I do have one friend with one on his). I'm talking very difficult steep, rocky, loose situations. So if you can get your hands on one with e-diff absolutely go for it, all other things being equal. If I'd known back in 2014 I would have specified one but I wouldn't change vehicles to get one.

    It didn't raise to extended. I don't think it was wedged very hard and may have raised if he'd persevered. However that's the beauty of the Llams module, we simply turn the dial to High and it raises to equivalent of extended height, you clear the obstacle and then lower down to whatever height the rest of the track requires.

    Llams is an aftermarket controller that allows the driver to control the suspension height without the factory restrictions. So the available height range is unchanged, it's just that you can access it more easily. So for extended height if you have it on factory offroad height and know you'll need more for a particular obstacle, use the Llams dial to add an offset & you have the same height as extended. Hope that makes sense, very intuitive in practice.

    The reason why LR don't provide this as a driver option is pretty clear after watching this video. It might have its uses for the experienced off roader, but these drivers would have done well to use a standard level option to ensure all wheels remained, as much as possible, in contact with the ground. It just looks dangerous in some of these situations where there is ground contact with only 2 wheels.

  • @sienaoverland

    @sienaoverland

    5 жыл бұрын

    While I agree that it requires experience to use Llams effectively and it is preferred to use the lowest practical suspension height in any given situation, I disagree that standard height works for some of the obstacles shown in this video. In fact, the use of Llams to add height allowed us to clear some sections and standard offroad height left us "beached". You can see this at 3:25 .... the extra height is required (see 3:50) and then further up the same hill I return to standard offroad height. You certainly want to minimise the use of an extended height because the suspension is much stiffer and traction harder to achieve as a result.

    I’m in the tyre/rim market for a second set of agressive muds. Was there and advantages to the 285 over the 265? Was the rubbing of the 285 not worth the hassle? Cheers Owen

  • @sienaoverland

    @sienaoverland

    5 жыл бұрын

    IMO not much advantage but some people always prefer to have the largest diameter. I have not found any difficulty with 265/60 when wheeling with others running 285/60 or 265/65. I don't want the hassle of a difficult to fit, fully deflated spare that hangs down pretty low (285). The rubbing itself doesn't seem to be a big issue but I think the 285 is getting a bit close to things on full lock. That's my take anyway.

    The video frame rate picks up the LED pulsing that you can’t see by eye. Most LED driving lights have their output moderated like this but the D4 seems to show it on camera very strongly. I’m going to try 24fps in future.

    @@sienaoverland I'm considering them just in case in my long trip the bags blow or the compressor dies! Happened to me in the city, ride is very harsh and bouncy and very low and rubbing etc... Ever had any similar experience? Thanks,

  • @sienaoverland

    @sienaoverland

    5 жыл бұрын

    I have not had any suspension issues but my Discovery is only 5 years old. I consider the risk of air bag failure to be very low. Compressor failure happens but only if it's in poor condition before the trip. If I was going on a long remote trip with a compressor of 7 or more years old, I would either service it or replace it. Most compressor problems give some warning and this is where a diagnostic tool is very useful; get the air bags up to normal height and disable the system so you don't lose air. Not a permanent fix but keeps you going if travelling remote. To me it's the same as maintaining coil or leaf suspension components before a big trip, just different components to consider.

  • @chaquisa1

    @@sienaoverland yeah i know what you are saying .Normally the standard rise is in 2.5 inch segments ,but the rods lift from standard ..2.5 inches so at entry height you would be at drive height which i reckon i can live with that.If i want to go higher on the trail i would set them at drive height therefore giving me rock height also for sand driving at a faster pace, drive height won't lower the suspension. Also 32's can be on there permanent .They actually give 14" clearance on extended mode.then you have super extended mode to get you out of a tight spot.

    Just food for thought, having your suspension raised up so much kills all of the suspension articulation and causes all that bouncing, wheel lift and wheel spin you're getting. Lower them down, keep on the high spots and use a higher gear, let the wheels travel and you'll idle over that stuff. Then those tracks will be the roads you use to get to the 4wd stuff.
