"Have you had any formal art training?" "No." I totally believe that.

still more successful than all of us... believing in yourself is more important than talent.
I remember loving this commercial and happy to finally see a face of a comic book artist.

Young Rob is a pretty handsome dude.
This commercial actually makes me more sympathetic to Rob Liefeld. He's just this kid who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground but figured out to how to draw superheroes in a way that most kids would envy (despite creative weaknesses and anatomical failure). He rode that success as far as it would go and now is reviled when his limitations became obvious (and he tried to overcome them with tracing).

He's a guy who loves drawing superheroes and draws them as well as he can! Even if he fails at anatomy and symmetry, he tries his best. And that's all that we can ask from an artist.

Ragitsu More than that, Frank Miller's style ate itself somewhere in the early parts of Sin City. He can barely draw or write now.
Proof that Rob Liefeld created the first Go Pro!
Around the time this commercial aired, Rob was a guest on Home Shopping Network. I was working in the studio at the time and while he was sitting on set by himself waiting, I got on the set overhead speakers and said, "Fly buttoned?" 😆
never mind jeans he'd know more about bras judging by the size of Captain Americas knocker.
It's not so much I'm gobsmacked Rob got an endorsement deal for jeans, it's that a comic artist got an endorsement deal for Levis jeans.

Liefeld was huge at the time. He appeared on talk shows and got interviewed in magazines regularly. This was after comics like Action #1 has sold for millions at auction and suddenly comics were taken seriously by the mainstream. So people like Liefeld who were young, good looking, and successful in the industry were seen as rockstars

There’s a clip where Stan Lee asks him about it. He saw this ad from Levi’s that they were looking for people with cool jobs so he called them and they invited him to the set.

Comics were definitely huge at this time. This ad even appeared on a break during the MTV VMAs in 1991, so millions of people probably saw it.

Spike Lee was doing a lot of Levis ads around this time, (There's one where he accompanies a bunch of cave explorers into the depths, and another where he goes to Spain for the running of the bulls.) and further, comics were pretty huge at this time, sometimes millions of issues were sold. This ad appeared on a break during the 1991 MTV VMAs, so millions of people must have seen it.
Jim Lee, George Perez, Art Adams, Jim Aparo and so many others have not had training either, but they still worked harder and better to understand the figure, anatomy, perspective and other elements to become great artists. He gave alot of other artists their big breaks, some, such as Todd Nauck, I admire, so he gets some cred for that.
Exactly. Liefeld's art has improved vastly, and heck, as much as he couldn't draw eyes, Youngblood was fun.
i don't understand why does no one like this guy

Exactly. People say he created Deadpool also, but he only helped co-create new costume design lol
I liked his early artwork.
I remember this commerical. Ive been looking for it for years!
I had to make sure this really existed and prove that it's not just a Mandela Effect thing.
Ladies and Gentlemen, This ad says everything.
"What Did your parents think?" "They hated it" Wow Rob, wow.
See? Even his parents hated him drawing comic books!
That was sort of my point. I don't make a living off my drawing for a reason, I can draw reasonably well but I'm not great (I wouldn't even say my sculpting and jewelry design is great even though I do make a living from it, not compared to my heroes like the Shiflett Bros). People who become famous comic book artists should be great, with creativity, originality, and a good grasp of anatomy.
Rob Liefeld: Levis needs more pouches!!!
But, he drew Spike Lee, covered in spikes with a fucking camera on his head. 0:19 Truly, he is a visionary.
I don't think anyone ever slapped him on the wrist and said 'NO!'
He's gotta be like 25 here but he looks 14.
I collect comics. I have a shitload of stuff from the early 90s, but it's all Vertigo. I don't have a single Liefeld comic in my collection. I may, however, get a copy of Youngblood #1 strictly for laughs. This is your legacy, Rob. Enjoy.
If Liefeld can make it big; anyone can make it big despite their talent. I'm not just talking about comic books either.
Guys come on! Rob was apart of the new, hot, young talent at Marvel in the late 80's! Sure his anatomy wasn't perfect, BUT it was COOL for it's time! Just like Jae Lee's early Namor work a few years later and others at that time! It was fun, exaggerated, and exciting which is what your going for as a comic artist in the 90’s! He brought something NEW! RESPECT!!!

+Mario Blue You do not know the first thing about art or producing comic books. You think Liefeld...the kid who EVERY ACTUAL ARTIST HATED BECAUSE HE COULD NOT DRAW, brought *respect* to comics?! GTFOH. He was a laughing stock who attracted a whole generation of Pokemon playing kids while actual artists looked at his stuff and marveled that the 'Big Two' publishers had allowed their standards to get so lax.
@marioblue9823

+DoctorSkepticus LOL Pokemon playing kids! Actually I am an artist and I wouldn't buy a comic if the art wasn't hot or "interesting" in a good way! Liefeld definitely had that something! Hey every artist is not a Jim Lee with that perfect style or a Norman Rockwell! Maybe your a Van Gough (who wasn't respected @ first because it went against the grain)! Now appreciated by the whole world!
I would credit Chris Claremont for most of the X-Men more than anyone. But that's a whole different can of worms.
It is my opinion that this commercial led almost directly to the formation of Image Comics. Rob said he created X-Force, Marvel Comics Inc. disagreed, a bit of discussion of creators rights and Rob, Todd, Jim, etc hit the road.

Going independent was on the tip of every writer and artist's tongue long before Image. A big motivator was the breakout hit of Ninja Turtles by a completely indie two-man studio, which started a chain reaction of indie comics sold directly to local stores (with varying success). The indie craze, weighed against the long-standing issue of creator ownership against the Marvel/DC giants, convinced the superstar artists of the late-80s/early 90s to leave the big studios and make Image. This commercial may have been the last straw, but compared to the other motivators, it couldn't have been a significant event
I like how the camera pans in on his crotch, uh, I mean, the buttons. Yeah, the buttons!
Collider Heroes brought me here
This commercial is so 90's.
no wonder his anatomies are all over the places, the floors, the walls, the curtains....
So was Vanilla Ice. There are alot of things that were big, yet nobody wants to revisit them. I don't see people remembering leg warmers from the 80's so warmly.
he was one of if not THE biggest name in the 90s and its fact
uncle Ed loves this commercial!
And he added lots of pouches.
At least this ad didn't feature Troll from "Youngblood" in the shower.
Gotta tell ya, it's good 2 see a chanel that does not have an axe 2 grind w / ROB! No one deserves 2 be trashed the way he's been. A lot of folks that hate on him, ironically...are probably fans of DeadPool, Cable and others, that he's created or co-created. Just imagine had he not come with these characters, nobody would be talkin' about them 2day!! knight0ut
Why can't anyone find the teen show he was on where he gave a tour of Image?
Happy birthday ROB!
I don't hate him.....but I would like to give him a book on how to do backgrounds.
I got a FEVAH! And my preescription says I need more pouches!
A lot of illustrators don't have formal art training. His style is a little off but people loved it back then and today Illustrators have taken his style but fixed what he was bad at. There is no wrong way with art, there is only their style. This is his style. Sometimes formal can come out looking to stiff, boring, and that wouldn't have sold millions back then. And their are some people who just aim towards his art but that wasn't all that he was about, he also had creativity in characters. Creating iconic characters is a tough thing to do. Trust me Marvel wasn't stupid back then, they seen something in this guy. Rob had the drive and passion to create comics.
No formal art training? Wow, I'm shocked!
"Just a lot of imagination" when it comes to the proportions of the human body. Gotta thank him for Deadpool tho.

spike lee directed the commercial
I don't want to get into a heated discussion but I really do think it was Fabian Nicieza who would get the credit. He wrote almost every Deadpool story the first few years. Yes he's evolved but what you are saying is similar to something like Jim Lee created the X-Men, because that is how we know them today.
A Spike Lee Joint.
Imagination=more pouches.
in highschool I really liked this guy and his art.along with Jim Lee and Todd Mcfarlaine. his style may not be for everyone. I was interested an checked out his current hawk and dove book for dc and its not too good. he didn't improve in 20 years. lots of empty backgrounds and panels that take up a whole page. I think the art shown in this commercial is pretty good though, it was before computer coloring.
Linkara should do a commentary with 90s kid.
Yes, I have seen Gladiator, and one of it's main problems is it is very historically inaccurate. Maximus was a warrior. But he was a Spartan. Spartan's were bisexual and nothing was thought of it at the time. It was as normal to them as it was to the Greeks. Nobody cared. If there had been any mention of his sexual preference before this, then Rob could have complained, but Shatterstar has never mentioned whether he was straight, gay or bisexual.
He went on a Twitter rant against Scott Snyder and the new Deadpool creative team, that's called being classless. Liefeld created Deadpool as a Deathstroke rip-off (not as wacky), but it was Joe Kelly who wrote the character into the 'Pool we know today (and is considered the true creator of him).
He's now hired to do the new 52 series for DC.

This commercial came out 6 months late.
Thanks for Deadpool, the look, not the personality. You can vanish forever now Liefeld.
@Cellmate412162 Rob Liefeld is to comic books what Ygnwie Malmsteen is to heavy metal. Also, pouches are to Rob Liefeld like explosions are to Michael Bay.
@ZACKWELDERS Joe Kelly did most of Deadpools personality... and had the best run on the character.
@himansku That's a spot-on comparison.
yeah Liefeld gets trashed on a lot in the industry, but like him or not he was a big name in the 90's and he is a really nice guy I've met him.
If only he knew how to draw cable,a gigantic beast without the tiny robin feet. Too bad he cant
Say what you will about Liefeld, but Button Fly Jeans = Hell. Yeah.
Yo, not for nothing, but I'm pretty sure Liefield only wrote Savage Hawkman. The art duties were someone else, aside from covers.
Just a lot of Imagination... i think.... Waow....
LIEFELD RULES!
28 people had their feet cut off.
he is funny i like his art
Spikeman does not have enough pouches.
I'm going out to buy a pair of fucking jeans, yeeha giddy up
Lol, "no formal training..." we can definitely see that.

"A lot of imagination" More like a lot of comics to swipe from.
wtf!? i remember this!!
@ 21 sec mark; Interviewer: "Rob, have you had any formal art training?" Rob: "No." Had the interviewer done some research before hand, he would not have needed to ask that question. I have one request of Mr. Liefeld. Can you draw for me a person but keep the feet proportional to the person's body size while keeping the feet in scale to the perspective of the drawing?
And to think DC put this guy in charge of not one, not two, but three, THREE BOOKS! I guess if DC can have four amazing books in Wonder Woman, Batman, Swamp Thing and Animal Man, they are legally obligated to have at the very least three abominations.
True visionaries make media products that features a gun that shoots a land-swimming shark that bites people from the balls, and treats it like it's a normal thing.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I Love the Image founders. The 90's comic book artist were Awesome too. They're the reason I Love Comics. You Can't hate on the guy too much, he gave the world DEADPOOL!!! 🤘🤠🤘
I have to agree with you about Liefeld... Katalyzt
Well, ONE of those statements is true.
