Levelling a DIY pond and setting water level
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Just a quick video where I talk about how I go about excavating/digging my ponds and setting the water level. In the video I talked a little about overflows, here's a more in-depth video on overflows- • Pond drainage and over...

It's so funny now, but at the time it was very annoying, it took me about three days to find out that my spirit level was defective. I only have a container pond, but I wanted the ground pretty level underneath. I kept adding sand, removing sand, showing I was level, then not level, etc. 😂

Oh that sucks! I must admit my patio pond is slightly uneven and it annoys the heck out of me.

I made the mistake to make the tiny stream in my pond system too small. When plants started to grow it started to block the water too much, and water would overflow. And another mistake that I made is that I made a barrel that is connected to the stream in which I grow yellow iris, but a single frog can block the outlet from the barrel just enough to make the water overflow the barrel. It were things that I did not keep in mind when I created my pond system. At some point in time I did lose a lot of water and it took me a while to figure out what was happening because initially I could not detect an obvious culprit for the loss of water. It drove me crazy. Until one day I saw the frog jumping away from me, and it was only then that I realized what was happening. 👍

Dams and low edges, it’s almost always where the leaks are.
🔥🔥🔥
What do you place on the ground around the pond to keep grass and weeds from growing right near the pond?

Could you do a video on rec pond pumps, more on keeping electrical cords out of the water for safety

Have you ever tried to build a pond on a slope? Not a slight slope either but one that's steep enough there are considerations you wouldn't otherwise have with your usual ponds.

I’d love to build a pond on the side of a hill. Awesome negative edge waterfall, unfortunately my yard is pretty flat.
It'll be great when the 'authorities' change the rules and make everyone get a pool fence around their water features. For our safety of course I have 5 acres and will doing some landscaping and possibly a big pond. I also have a small dam that used to be faulty clear with reeds growing around it. Now it's more brown. I am thinking of playing around with a natural filter system for it to try it out.

Thank you for your hard work to make a gorgeous video like this! I have a question for you: could you please share how you can place a pump and how to connect that pump to your bog filter? through soft pipes or something? Also, how you can make a pump without paying too much? thx for your suggestion!!!

Hello Kev, just finished my pond after two years of work where I've been looking for the leakage for one year. Finally all is done, now finishing the edges and the stream. Problem I have is that in very hot days temperature of my pond is 28 deg. C. I think that above 26 deg. C the bacteria start dying, how do you keep your water cool in australia, how is your temperature in australia, could you maybe make video about temperature, info about what is happening with bacteria and possibly what to do during and after hot days whan your water temperature increase? I can send you pictures of my pond which is inspired by your dream pond.

I’ve done one about cold temps. One about hot temps. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that bacteria dies at 26C. I tested my ponds recently and did a vid, I can’t remember what the temps were, that was early summer, I think.
This video was really useful and addresses the primary question I have right now. Our property came with a pre-dug pond area. It was primarily designed to hold water runoff, since we are on a slope. There is a channel about 10ft wide that very gradually declines in elevation until it widens into the pond area, which is about 40ft wide. And at this point of widening, there's no hard edge on the floor -- it's a gradual decline until the center of the pond. From the center of the pond to other end is a normal 5ft wall, basically a semi-circle, where can build a couple levels of of 2ft high ledges. How do you feel about only having walls on the back half of the pond area, while the other half (entry point) is a very wide, gradual slope? Eventually I know the water will self level upstream. My goal/hope is to convert the channel into a flowing stream, like yours, going into the recreation pond area. But I'm just not sure if I absolutely need hard edges all the way around.

From what you’ve told me I’m more concerned about the runoff and your intent on using it as a rec pond. Ponds in low areas, filled with runoff collect all kinds of nutrients, very hard to keep clean and clear.
Kev, maybe a silly question - what do you do with all of the excess soil? I plan to do a 50sft pond next spring and have no idea what to do with all the excess soil. It seems crazy to toss it in a dumpster or something but I have nowhere to put it...?

I spread it, even create a few mounds or contours to create interest in the garden.
Hi Kev, I have a question for you. I have a pretty big bog filter for my pond, and I must say it works great. I do have a sponge filter connected to my pump in the pond, is this necessary? I find myself cleaning this sponge more often than I would like appreciate any feedback, cheers!

I’d just give it a go. You can always put it back, if it creates problems.
Hey Kev, do you get aquatic blackfly and their larvae over in Oz? I'm finding them on my new-ish pond in the UK clinging onto my waterfall, they look like mosquito larvae and apparently the adults suck human blood. How do you handle these? I've been knocking them off into the pond and the fish eat them, but I can't get them all. Thanks!

I get some kind of fly larvae on the waterfall. I leave them, part of the ecosystem. A fly hasn’t killed me yet 😉
Which is why this realm is flat, not a spinning ball in vacuum.
