How to build a DIY backyard ecosystem pond with bog filter, intake bay and stream

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows how I put together all the components of an ecosystem pond. These pond filters are all DIY. No expensive professional filter system needed. Adding a pond like this to your backyard garden is easier than you might think. If I can do it anyone can.
In the video I mentioned other videos, so here they are:
Designing a backyard pond- • How to design a backya...
I also mentioned the pdf file that helps you size the filters for any size pond you can find that here- ozponds.com/pond-equipment/
DIY Backyard garden pond- • DIY Backyard Garden Pond ( this is the one with the bog filter in the blue olive barrel)
Dream pond build and updates playlist- • Dream pond build ( This is my largest pond, it also has a long stream)
DIY Fish pond and stream playlist (This is the one with the bog filter built inside the long sweeping stream)
The playlist video will show more in-depth building footage and finishing off the edges. It will also give a good idea of the order of how I assembled everything.

Your ponds are so healthy. The bog filter and intake bays are definately superior to other methods. I struggled so much with maintenance on my fancy $1000 brand filters that always clogged, always sucked in fish, always broke, or failed in some way. Doing my new rebuild with all my lessons learned and your videos are going to be a template for me. Thanks!!

I love your approach and how you deal with expensive overpriced pond equipment like the Aquascape stuff...I'm sure their stuff is good, but from watching you I used a compost bin as my pump vault as it had the opening in the bottom and lid for the top and my wetland filter works a dream. Love your work buddy.

Adding mulch to cover liner edges adds the risk of increased water loss due to wicking. Especially where water is scarce, better to avoid anyabsorbent material near pond edges. Over time, the same can happen with decaying plants, roots, leaves etc. So, while looking great, there¨'s often a price to be paid for 'natural' edges :)

Good tips 👍. That’s why I like to have the edges 15cm (1/2 a foot) above the water level.

I do it the same. Supersize the bog filter, add jets and possibly a high flow filter to help with solid removal.

I don’t think it’s always necessary. If I were building a really big, wide filter I would use some kind of matrix block.

Hi Kev! Thanks a lot for your generosity sharing your knoledge!! I really apreciate that! I have a 7 x 11 meters swimming pond, that you could call "just natural" because there´s no biological active filtration more than the bacterian biofilm on the rocks and pebbles and the big quantity of plants that are stablished over 3 years now. But I want to build a bog to improve the water quakity (wich is good, by the way. Some days I can see the bottom on the 2 meters deep area. ). My question: can I use 110 mm drain pipes instead of the trench you use? (not posible to find here in Argentina!). And to make the slots with a electric saw , aprox 1/3 depp in the pipe, how many in a linear meter of the pipe you sugest to do??? (I am gon use 2 meters pipes !) Thanks in advance for your help!!! and regards from Argentina!

Hi Kev, I made a big barrel filter as you’ve instructed in your previous uploads and it’s working great , my pond is 1500 litres and I’m only getting 480 litres per hour flowing through filter because pump is also running a water fall , do I need the full 1500 litres to flo through filter per hour, thanks Mick

Does aeration play an important role on this kind of pond? I always got a feeling that aeration is not matching, visually, with the natural style pond.
