Or in Hera's case usually trying that, failing and tilting.
I actually love paliside-gates, when I see one I know exactly where to strike.
Considering that there are giant holes where the gate is, the pierce armor ought to be more like 10, because there's nothing to hit in the first place.

Against melee units you can delete one piece of your palisade wall and build a gate behind it. That was, the enemy still can fit many units around it to hit it, but you still can move in and out without having to replace Palisades. It only works if the enemy is on melee units though.
@FacloFormerFavorite

Yeah I really love doing this. Also I think if it’s a diagonal section it automatically removes one section of wall but I’m not certain on that.
I had no idea the gate's pierce armor was so much lower! It does often feel like you can shred it with archers, but I always figured that was just that it felt satisfying hitting that big target.
It also costs resources to idle anvil to remake the palisade. And you can put a palisade gate on a one tile gap so the melee units can’t stack up on it.
If I ever have to make a gate, I make sure to put buildings (mainly houses) at the sides to funnel it to at least two tiles. But yes, the gate really should have +1/+1 armor and cost five less wood.
The gate looks cooler though..

As much as i hate the gate sometimes i just have to make it so enemy cant just rush in when im not looking. Its rare but sad to lose games like that. Also having a villager to stop working is kinda bad. My best answer is to make a GATE behind the wall and delete just one wall. or make few walls in front of the gate. That literally solves all problems. Does cost a little more but in long run its the best.
Cool video :D One thing I'd like to add - when you delete the palisade wall and rebuild it, you should also consider the time villager spends not working - walking to the walls, building, walking back to resource gathering. Villagers gather 20-25 resources per minute and it heavily depends on distance to the walls but I'd assume gate is worth it resource-wise if you take two trips or more. Main argument of gates being much easier to break remains true however.
This video was life changing! Tysm Hera

One thing that wasn't mentioned here but could be important: The gate is a cheap way to instantly block 4 tiles wide for e.g. quick walling, as opposed to having to micro the vil to start building 4 individual pieces. Edit: Duh, should've read other comments first, was mentioned already

Being able to float 5000 wood by minute 20 in game is pretty impressive
Using the villager to rebuild walks loses you out on the resources he could be gathering which will make a wall more expensive the more you build and destroy. A gate also reduces micro. Also you can build a building behind the gate leaving one space so that if it is destroyed, the enemy has only 1 tile entry still as if it was a wall. Gate longterm is much cheaper tbf
There is the trick whereby you can wall behind a palisade being attacked with a perpendicular palisade gate to avoid being ranged by archers. Otherwise you have to use the market as it needs to be a 4 tile building. Learnt this from Hera ironically 😅
You can place the gate 1 tile behind the palisade wall, costing you 36 wood instead of 30 but being less vulnerable to melee units. Just gotta watch out for archers. And yes, if you want to sneak you can still delete a palisade somewhere else

I came here to say the same thing. Learned that trick in CBA 😂
"Maybe my brain is not at that level yet" This humility proofs he does not just call himself the best player for no reason.
If you have seen Biry's arena signature crossed palisade wall in action your opinion would instantly flip by 360 degrees.
Only use case: quick wall traps
I always like to anchor my palisade gates behind two buildings or terrain etc. Or if that's not available I build it one row behind a two-space gap in palisade wall in order to minimise the melee surface area that can be attacked from outside my base. I never realised that archers with fletching can break a gate in half the time however compared to a wall section, that's kinda scary!
Glad to see destroying and rebuilding wall tiles as it was in Age of Empires 1 where no gates existed made its comeback into the meta after 25 years.

I mean, if we assume this villager didn't come from the other side of the map, you probably lost like... 5-10 ressources..? In the case you do plug the hole. And the palissade gate is still easier to destroy, so.. The walking time can be calculated, I guess, but it's pretty situational. 2 different players probably won't use the same villagers, have the same walls, or even timings.
As a building? yes. As a means to quick wall? Def good
Surprised you didn't mention their awesome utility for quick walling! They are most useful for this because they give the vil a couple tiles extra reach over a house or palisade tile at a very low cost and a nice palisade gate often fits cleanly into nooks and crannies where a market won't. #LongLivePalisadeGates
Dang... you gotta love Hera ❤️
so... gate - costs more - has less armor - larger surface area (more melee troops can hit it at once) some balancing needs to be done to make it more viable...

I think the point is that the gate should be a weak point in your wall, much like it probably was in real life. I don't see a reason to buff it.
I make my palisade and put the door behind it, then I delete only one square so that the units can use it, and this way I prevent many units from attacking it at the same time, but if I go against archers I usually put a stone door
Unlikely usage but gate could then be used as a decoy exit to launch an attack from
One thing that you didn't mention: Palisade Gates work well with stone gates as part of a second outer layer of palisades to slow down an enemy raid. It might/might not work against high level players, but it buys you a LOT of time to shoot at the enemy or find reinforcements when the enemy keeps throwing small armies at your base. Then you can just repair/replace the Palisades instead of burning precious stone trying to keep defenses intact. (This can help a LOT if you're doing the campaigns for the first time)
i suppose the best case scenario is for allies' military and trade to pass through
Performance review of Mr. Palisade gate. Brutal.
At lower levels can get away with building a gate on the back of your base since very few (I forget to too Ngl) check around the back for if there are walls so you can knight spam and allow your knights out (if you forget to build them as part of the walls)
Hera with the shade
I generally only use the gate if I preemptively wall my resources where units go in all the time. Especially the wood line which usually the gather point. And when I do I am expecting scouts so I’m not that concerned with the lacking pierce armor. The wider attack surface of melee units I usually mitigate by buildings houses or other buildings in front of the gate, leaving only one tile to enter/exit. I know it’s not optimal, but with limited attention and apm I think that is optimal for me.
best way to build palisade gates in front of tc within the range, or 1 tile behind palisade gates with only 1 tile opening of the walls.
The deference between palisade walls and gate, in a way show what difference makes having masonry and architecture in later stages of the game.
Villager walking time+build time will make the palisade wall delete replacement to move units out at least as expensive as a gate.
Also to add insult to injury it's a lot easier to click on a gate as well to attack.
Big brain move is to wall the base with palisade gates and your opponent never knows which one you used to get out of base with army.
i would love a "top 5 ways to annoy Daut" video
5k wood at min20. Hey, I took that personally.
Good points. I think pallisade gates should be cheaper (like -10, -12 or even -15 wood), or have the same (or even slightly better) armor as the pallisade walls to even consider to be used.
Make the gate and three walls behind leaving only one small tile gap!
Ah the good ol palisade gate. As a kid I always wondered why they were never in the original version. On an unrelated note, is that the Windows XP default wallpaper behind the palisade gate in the icon?

Heraaa Lord
Palisade wall is only useful as a 1 by 4 shape foundation for quick walling and trapping
I just don't have very much APM and if I need to break a palisade gate end rewall every time I go through it can delay my leaving my base by a few seconds.
Why does he sound like "Hello wonderful person" at the start of his video lol
Just wall up the gate with buildings or even walls so that you have a 1 tile gate. Costs more resources but we'll still have 4993 wood at minute 20.
Put the gate behind the pallisade and delete 1 piece

Please make that video with Daut, would be hilarious!
We used to do this in aoc
Here I am just trying to learn how to lure in a boar and manage my economy, and Hera is right down to analyzing the finest details of f'ing walls...
What I do for this is just add the palisade gate BEHIND the walls and delete only 1 wall to let units in and out. Put this doesn't help with the lack of pierce armor
I do the gate because I don't have the brain capacity to replug the holes with vills every time at 1100 elo. But I do it behind existing walls, leaving only one tile of the wall open so melee units cannot attack from 4 tiles
They're great for making custom scenario's pretty, though.
Hi guys, Spirit of the Law herrrr... Waaaaaait a minute!
YESSS DRAG IN THE LORD DAUT 11
Proceeds to quick wall in 3 enemy scouts with a pallisade gate
For all the noobs like me. I started doing somewhat in between. I start walling only with palisades, but when I either mass archers in base or start spamming scouts/knights and lets say 1 stable is inside base, then i delete 1 tile and put gate behind. Yes, additional cost, but it's usually after I mass army/when I mass army, so it's not so bad. Still more vulnerable to archers, but by being behind a wall it's still good vs melee.
@HeraAgeofEmpires2 And what is your proposed solution ?
@LucasMartinsS
4 күн бұрын
leave an opening near the town center, nobody will enter your base since you can easily garrison villagers on it to shoot invaders. (at least in early game)
maybe its worth it to build three extra paliside infront or behind the gate and leave 1 tile gap to reinforce the gate?
Build time? Very minor detail in the grander diacussion, but I'm curious!
What about Stones ones ? Should I kill gates or walls when trushing on Arena ?
FYI: Palisade Gates also take 30 secs to build. That's incredibly slow for a building with only 400 HP. Especially with the 0 Armor of Foundations it's very easy to break while in construction.
Thoughts on Stone gates?
So we need a lil palisade gate buff.
So even if you make a "gate wall" simulating a "palisade wall" turning each gate in a way the area of contact of the attackers is the same of the palisade wall tiles, the palisade wall is yet way better than the palisade gate wall
The lower pierce armor vs walls in insane, without mentioning that it being 4 tiles wide it also allows more melee units to attack it at the same time so it is weaker to both melee and ranged compared to walls Juat give it the same pierce armor and make it have 1000hp
Please can someone tell me how to rotate a gate, whilst your trying to build it
A small and unimportant sideproblem of the the palisade gate: you cant really repair them, it costs 45 wood to repair one to full which is very expensive. Although in most cases, you would just build a new one.
7:10 it burns
Did they ever remove that secret added cost of a gate replacing wall foundations?
7:14 Bruh! I suck, but I don't suck that much!
That's why if I really need gate and I can't afford spending stone, I build double gates with covered corners. Gates as is are endeed bad.
To solve the easy to break gate problem: Just build a second one behind it!
Calling it now, Hera wins the grand final of Red Bull Wololo by baiting his appointment with a 200 IQ decoy gate in the final game.
👍🏻
I wouldn't hate giving a completed palisade gate +1 PA. That feels like it would fix most of the primary issue of gates being effectively half as tough as a palisade wall vs archers. I also think there's a cast to be made for building the gate behind a one tile gap in a palisade wall or between two houses so even if they do break the gate it's still a one tile choke point. As for the secrecy/baiting point, I think that's spoken too in the video itself that a) only applicable to a very small minority of players and b) subject to increasing levels of mind games if you want to play them.

Or you can create gate and palisade infront of it without 1 tile so you can get best of both worlds like in CBA
