All a bit moot now, with an ESP32, a string of leds and 30 seconds to flash the code you have a FAR superior led controller. I used to love building stuff like this as a kid and i do indeed lament the passing of kits like this but times have moved on.

I understand your point about the power of the ESP32, but don't you think that for this kind of project, it's a bit like using a cannon to kill mosquitoes? It's great to have powerful tools, but sometimes, for simple tasks, wouldn't it be a bit excessive? Using such an advanced microcontroller like the ESP32 might be a quick solution, but it's also a missed opportunity to learn with a more basic approach. Moreover, considering costs and efficiency, for simple projects like this, opting for a more modest option might be more suitable. Let's not underestimate the beauty of understanding how things work with simple components, don't you think? Sometimes, the basics lead us to a better understanding of the fundamentals. im sure there are also people that might suggest a Raspberry for that...

But that's the issue. Every single device these days is micro controlled. One of the very first things i built as a kid was a 2 transistor flip flop to light two alternating leds. Now, you would write a pice of code to do that. Maplins has gone, Tandy's has gone. now almost everything is SMD. The old style hobbyist is long gone. There are no "electronic" classes in schools but there are coding classes. Most kids will never know the joy of tasting a 9v battery or wiring a 555 timer to make a funky noise. But they can write you a program to do it!!! Have you picked up a copy of Elektor or Everyday Pratical Electronics??? ALL repeat ALL microcontroller based projects. It's a shame.@@oskimac
