CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Riggs (Mel Gibson) busts some drug dealers at a Christmas tree lot.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
L.A. cop Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), whose wife has recently died, is a loose cannon with a seeming death wish. This makes him indispensable in collaring dangerous criminals, but a liability to any potential partners. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), a conservative family man who wants to stay alive for his upcoming 50th birthday, is partnered with Riggs. As Riggs gets to know Murtaugh and his family, he begins to mellow, though his insistence on using guerilla tactics to catch criminals is still (put mildly) above and beyond the call of duty. The main villain is The General (Mitchell Ryan), a drug dealer responsible for the death of the daughter of one of Murtaugh's oldest friends. The General is also in charge of a deadly, militia-like gang of smugglers. Adding fuel to the fire is The General's chief henchman, played with all stops out by Gary Busey. Moviegoers familiar only with the relatively tongue-in-cheek Lethal Weapon sequels may be amazed to find out how dangerous and unpredictable Riggs is in the first Lethal Weapon -- and how likely it seems that Murtaugh might not survive until fade-out time.

Who people are on the big screen isn't who they are in real life. Don't ever confuse the two. 4.) It's not illegal to be racist, not that he is....he's not. 5.) First day on the job, and, after a wild shootout, where the bad guy is fatally wounded, he falls into the Swimming Pool, and gets caught up in the Pool Cover. Riggs and Murtaugh dive in after the guy...but discover that he's already dead. Afterwards, as they swim to the edge of the Swimming Pool, and rest there, catching their breath, before they climb out of the Pool, Murtaugh looks at Riggs, and asks him:"Is there anybody you've ever met, that you didn't kill"? Riggs looks at Murtaugh, and says:"Well, I haven't killed you yet"! I love that verbiage between these two! Later, Murtaugh ended up "eating crow", when he thinks about how Riggs had saved his life.....and thanks Riggs for doing that for him.....only for Riggs to look at him, and tell him:"I'll bet that hurt to say that", to which Murtaugh replies:"More than you'll ever know". And THAT is the start of a great friendship! One that's still going strong to this day!

Many reasons... Movies at the time were made for the American/Western World markets in mind. Scripts were solid and engaging. But nowadays, big productions target the international markets: India, Russia, and China... So they look pretty and flashy, but the content is shallow: A sugary dessert without nutritional value. Soderbergh and Scorsese have talked about this. Our only hope would be some indie folks...

One little side note for anybody who cares. I saw this movie recently - definitely one of the few, flawless movies. It doesn't matter it's just a genre, cop film. It has a great, but not overdone story - simple, to the point, but not stupid. It has amazing characters, dialogue and character work - not just by Gibson and Glover, but by Busey and everyone else in the cast. Everyone fits their part to a t. Gibson and Glover are on another level - just exceptional chemistry that probably never was bested in any similar film. The cinematography is great too. The desert scenes, the final fight near the hydrant, the chase through the night city, the close-ups of Riggs fuming at the beginning selling the intensity. It's so well shot and executed. The whole movie has the right, perfect balanse of seriousness and humor. It doesn't feel like a comedy although there are a lot of laughs. The first sequel is still a great film, it retains a lot of the first's attributes, but it turns Riggs and Murtaugh slightly into comic-book/sitcom versions of their characters and the whole movie plays a lot like a comedy. It's not too much, no. 2 is still a great film, but you can feel a certain difference. The movie started a whole genre - the buddy cop movie. It was preceded by 48 hours with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy kinda doing the "buddy" thing well too, but Lethal Weapon really put it over the top. It's still the ultimate blueprint for the genre. And in today's culture, the movie is refreshingly rough - the language, jokes, violence, etc. It's not a bloodbath or an overflow of cheap insults, but it's nicely unafraid to just be what it is instead of trying to be politically correct. It still feels fresh, current and entertaining. It stood the test of time at over 30 years old. Basically, this is IMO a cinema classic on the level of It's a wonderful life, Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, etc. It just so happens it's a genre film, but it's a classic nonethless.

Riggs's Beretta 92F is a beautiful gun. 9mm 15+1 round capacity, dual/ambi safeties/decocking levers, loaded chamber indicator , drop safety and firing pin block, all aluminum, open breach design to ensure stabilities of rounds cycling up the feed ramp and no jamming/misfires. Works every time. Riggs and John McClane made the Beretta the badass gun of the best 80's action flicks. Die Hard and Lethal weapon are two of my favorite movies and two of the greatest action flims ever made. They just don't make movies this awesome anymore. Even Cobra with Stallone and the lovely Brigitte Nielsen for as cheesy as it was is an awesome action film, the modeling shots of Brigitte and the robots juxtaposed with Stallone and his partner hitting the streets and busting heads is brilliant. Not to mention one of the best one liners ever, "I'm gonna blow this place to kingdom come!" "Go ahead, I don't shop here!" Also, "We are the way of the new world man!" "No you're just a disease and I'm the cure!" So badass.

That’s Anthony Keides’ dad in that scene (lead singer of the RHCP’s). Never noticed that before. Blackie Dammett.
