"Let the Thunder of Victory Rumble!" (Гром победы, раздавайся!) was an unofficial Russian national anthem during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The piece is a polonaise composed by Osip Kozlovsky (1759-1831), a composer of Polish origin who became famous in Russia for his patriotic polonaises. Kozlovsky wrote most of his music for the Russian Imperial Court.
The lyrics to the anthem were written by Gavrila Derzhavin (1743-1816), a Russian statesman who was one of the country's most celebrated poets before Alexander Pushkin. The song commemorates the capture of the Ottoman fortress Izmail by the Russian general Alexander Suvorov, an event that effectively ended the Seventh Russo-Turkish War. The song's chorus praises Catherine the Great. A variation of the piece is quoted in Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades" (Pique Dame).
The image in the video is a painting by Mikhail Matveevich Ivanov of the Russian imperial fleet in the Bosphorus Strait.
Lyrics, translation, and transliteration below:
Lyrics:
Translation:
Triumph's thunder louder, higher!
Russian pride is running high!
Russia's glory sparkles brighter!
We have humbled Muslim might.
Refrain:
Hail to you for this, oh Catherine!
Gentle mother to us all!
Brilliant Empress, gaze at visions,
And behold, a woman great:
In your thoughts and your decisions
As one soul we all partake.
Transliteration:
Grom pobedy, razdavaysya!
Veselisya, khrabry Ross!

Slav'sya sim, Yekaterina!
Slav'sya, nezhnaya k nam mat'!
