Hey Mate! I'm the repair tech from Yellowknife that took a stab at that iPad Mini 4. It is sad to see that they didn't include the reason why that iPad was not repairable. I can tell you that it was an un-identified board level issue. I tried two different refurbished LCD assemblies and neither display would work. (issue was not the battery). The housing of the device was considerably dented and bent. So I suspect physical damage to the motherboard. I lack the equipment to diagnose or fix board level issues as it's not cost effective for me to pursue in my location. By the way, I appreciate your commentary on the video. I agree with alot of your points. Wish I had a voice about how they went about this story because it is quite misleading in some areas.

I'm right there with you. This was absolutely a blue ball inducing show. PS that guy with the Samsung S 20 with a cracked screen totally dropped it. There were clear signs of impact on the outside which would never happen even if it was possible to get so hot the glass cracks.

@@lateral1385 I'm not gonna rewatch the video, it's been two months, but iirc that situation happened in a car. *ALL* cars have a compartiment at the passenger side where you could fit 50 phones. If the idea is to keep the phone out of the sun AND out of the heat, wrapping it in a towel must be the worst idea ever to travel one's brain in this situation.

I can honestly say the newer stuff is Absolutely not built stronger or better... everything is zazor thin and lightweight. I regularly open laptops at work (IT) and it's so bad that literally a small dust buildup will dead stop CPU fans. Also, most manufacturers have no upgrade path and EVERYTHING is soldered to the motherboard. If that CPU fan goes bad, the motherboard, ram and ssd all have to be replaced. Absolutely ridiculous nonsense.

You know, failure rates are given in function of time. For example: phone X has a failure rate of 0.5% in the first 2 months, and 1% in the first year. Phone Y has a failure rate of 0.4% in the first 2 months, we don't have data for 1 year period because the product is still new

True story i had a tablet and an army of gremlins came charging in my home stopped, looked me in the eyes and says "For Louis." and then began to crack my screen. Crazy thing is, i never owned a tablet.

"Tell them the truth" - I can personally attest to this! My dad had fried his MC battery on his old Harley, didn't realize that the boot was worn out at the top of the starter, cable shorted and boiled over a brand new battery when he installed the new one. When we went to the store, I was fully honest about what happened, expecting that we'd pay full price but the manager was so impressed that someone told the truth they offered a free replacement in exchange for the core. Fixed the starter cable isolation boot and reinstalled the battery, no more battery issues as long as he owned that bike. Be honest, they might just appreciate that enough to help you for cheaper/free.

Customers like that guy who are CLEARLY lying are the worst part of any customer service job, even worse than the angry unhinged people, though the former usually morphs into the latter

This is why my uncle had them sign waivers that he wasn't responsible for any damages that occurred after he worked on it. He's a garbage person but at least he was a pretty good repair man. I worked for him for a few weeks before moving out of state.

They made three major mistakes: - pulling out single examples instead of looking at cases at scale - making it a competition between vendors (Samsug vs Apple etc) - not consulting 3rd party knowledge (like Louis') for evaluation Or as media and marketing people say: They "bent" the story. Or as Louis says: "blueballed"

Well, as someone who works in creating a product with Li-ion batteries. He's not right about it all being a problem with the battery technology. You could also do a LOT to make the batteries last longer. For example, charging a Li-ion to 100% wears it out. So, don't charge above 90% unless absolutely necessary and the battery will last many years. Of course, phones could do this automatically and never charge above 90-95, but there is no incentive for the companies to do that. Selling a new device every 1.5-2 years is more profitable. Also, all this "supercharging" wears out the battery faster. "80% charge in 10 minutes" or whatever, will also make your battery life much shorter. Because heat=wear and charging fast = a lot of heat. But fast charging is now something that they compete with, so that's not going to go away any time soon.

I dunno Louis kinda forgot to ask if the batteries were inflated. I have seen the back glass break from an expanding battery especially if it had a scratch. I look at the crack. Look for an impact spot.

So he’s a roofer and you’re telling me the screen cracked from heat.. rather than him just dropping it.. because he’s answering his phone.. on the roof..

Not to mention that most glass doesn't have a significant chance of spontaneously cracking until it exceeds ~300F. if the back of your phone is at a temperature above 300F, it's probably on fire.

I love when stories go along the "We asked viewers about X" angle, cause you just know that it is the extreme ends of people who answer that kind of thing and not the everyday person who didn't have a problem, or at least know the problem is their own fault, by dropping phones etc.

That first story about the screen getting too hot and just cracking on it's own is similar to my old Galaxy S4. What happened is that one time I was having a heated argument with someone on the phone, and then when they hung up on me I slammed my phone down on the desk and my screen just cracked. See, same thing - heat.

The cheapest new phone at my local Argos store is $15. It has a camera, bluetooth, headphone jack etc etc. If I had $1300 I think I would buy an Apple M1 mini, a 55 inch Tv, and a bucket of KFC.

This part right here gets me the most. In my country you got 3 or 4 major providers and all of them will offer s phones with no upfront cost, as long as you sign a deal of paying them a monthly fee, that gives you certain amount of minutes, messages, data. My current one is like 19 dollars, and I can almost never ever spend all the free messages, phone call time and data. With it I got Y9 2019 phone, with which I am still super happy today. I got silicone protection of the back and foil over the screen and even though I don't take special care of it, it's almost as new after 3 years.. The thing is, the selection of phones that you can pick up for such pay plans, if you go crazy and decide you want to pay more then 15, 20 bucks and pay for 3 years and not 2 is crazy.. It goes with obviously some pre pay all the way to the newest models.. Now I used to be super interested in tech, computers and smart phones ones they came out, new every spec and possibility, but that was 10 years age. Now I just go every 2 years and get a new phone and renew my contract. I was so satisfied with Huawei, and last generation of this phone, that I would sometimes either sell the new one, or gift my old one to a friend. I get bored by looking at all the specs, since all new smart phones are good enough for work and a lot of media, some games, that I might consume. So while I often don't even have a short list with which ones I would want, I tend to stand with the brand I had last, just so I wouldn't have to relearn how to optimize and setup the phone the way I like it.. Even then, I can usually pick a new one in 15-20 min.. Usually only thing I look at nowdays is procesing power, memory both rem and ram and it's still a short affair. Now I undestand there is a huge difference in living standards between my country and US, medium income here being about 10-15 thousand dollars (for a single household, maybe a bit lower) with which you can live comfortably if you aren't being idiot financially.. But even then, just think about this..For the product and service of 24 months, I will pay with less then my monthly salary. You wiill get a year worth of garranty which they will upheld, because even if you are wrong about something, all you need to say, maybe I'll see what you competition thinks. Sorry for walls, getting to the point. So with average 10k to be realistic income level, for 500 you have almost infinite choice and not have to think about a cell phone for the next two years. Some of there phones can be a bit more expencive if bought without a plan, but you get my drift. IF over all states of america, average income could be from 3 to 5 times bigger, so let's say a medium of 50k. This woman still went out and with 0 prior knowledge, research and now acts like even the price alone was ludicrous.. It is, no mater the standard, giving money, 1300 in fact if you might use your phone for basic stuff, not work and maybe sometime web serfing is nuts.. It just really nicely depicts the wackiness of US whole consumer culture. Cell phones and lap tops used to be a status symbol in my country almost 10-15 years ago. People would save for 6m to a year only to buy a phone that costs half as their 15 year old car. Luckily seems like a nation, we have outgrown it, but I never ever noticed in the US that level of poor people trying to showoff wealth by having nice tech on them or snickers.. Like it was in my country 15 years ago.. So lady, the price is ludacris, maybe, but what is sure without a shadow of a doubt completely bonkers is that you might want to approach life and future financial decisions with little more then just braindead consumer, the pricier the better philosophy.. The cult of the things at all is one of modern diseases, which we all really need to work on collectively and admit it's a problem.. The things you own end up owning you.. The more things you own, less free you are. In a state of emergency or some future Apocalypse which will inevitebly come sooner or later, just remember that only things you can call your own are things you can actually defend from others. I don't care if she is making 200k a year, giving 1300 bucks, without any pre investigation of products, when it's seems probable that it isn't work phone.. You are a human being capable of making own decisions and choosing life paths first, then a mindless, overworked dron, with happiness being falsely connected to owning the next new thing - second. Try and be first thing most of the time.. We are destroying habitats ability to nurture ourselves, but as much as planned obsolescence and many other environmentally wrong practices, all stemming from sick neoliberal capitalism model are too blame, with externalities being taken out of the context, like they don't mater, or simple fact that infinite growth in finite system is impossible, so is each and every one of us who hoards stuff, chasing that next buy! buy! buy! dopamine hit. We can and must do better, or you know.. we could.. maybe.. why should I think of my grandkids and if they will have a civilization to be born into, if I'm not even sure my kids if I had them had any chance to live at least as good as I?

I owned a $500 computer for 10 years and broke. Omg. How terrible of it.

Still have a 2011 Macbook. Had to remove a RAM stick, now it's got 2GB. And the original spinning hard drive was replaced. Surprisingly the original battery is still holding up even though almost I never use it with charger connected.

My first television set (Philips 20" crt) is still working, bought back in 1997. The portable Toshiba 486 looking like a sew-machine while not really viable today still WORKS in spite being lugged around the country for years. This is the longevity that *should* not only be *expected* , but actually demanded.

@@johanmetreus1268 It's very easy to design a huge chunk of plastic and metal that sits in one place in your house and does one purpose. It probably wasn't even designed to be durable, it has such an easy job that durability is inherent in the materials used. It's very hard to design a device with the processing power of a 1990s super computer with a high-res digital camera and video recorder that also sends and receives phone calls, connects to Wifi networks, tracks your location with GPS, is fully battery-powered, has security features that prevent unauthorized users but which don't interfere with your own routine, and by the way fits in your pocket, to also be as durable as a piece of furniture. It can be improved probably but that will cost you, and these things are already pushing the limit of what consumers can afford.

I expect people buy them on plans and don't realise the upfront cost of the phone. The point of the expensive plan is to hide the cost. All my phones have been cheapies. Current phone is a Lenovo S5 - cost me $135AU, 4gb RAM, 64 GB internal memory , Octacore CPU. From a Chinese website about a year ago. If it breaks I won't be pulling my hair out and haven't wasted money on insurance.

Very informative all around. I gots a short story about user denial. I wrote software (fortran!) for a minicomputer in the 70's. I also ended up being a software/hardware troubleshooter for the science group, because I could usually figure things out. One of the most frequent things was the user denying they had changed anything and “now it doesn’t work anymore. I didn’t change a thing.” Of course they did. One guy had changed a formula so it would end up eventually dividing by zero. Mini's in those days didn't like that very much..lol.

As an ex-handset repair tech for Verizon (back when they actually opened them up and repaired them), I never encountered a customer who dropped it in their toilet/ocean or sidewalk. It always happened on its own without customer action (sure buddy). That's why electronics manufacturers put little water indicators inside their devices -- they turn pink or red when they come into contact with a liquid. Virtually every single customer who promised me they never got their phone wet all head tripped indicators.

@@zidbits1528 You ought to watch some of Louis' videos about how, at least part of the time, those things turn red from humidity...without having been wet. You can't expect accuracy from indicators 100% of the time...and that goes for some other types of damage indicators, too. Think about how someone, who actually never abused their gear, feels when they're told that they did, by idiots who place too much trust in such things. Does the word infuriating come to mind? For that matter, even devices packed--supposedly--properly, can be damaged within boxes that have no apparent damage on the outside. Some years ago, I bought a new laptop at Best Buy. When I opened the box (which showed no obvious damage), I found that the screen was badly damaged. When I took it back the next day (by the time I'd unpacked it, the store had closed for the day) , I was accused of having deliberately breaking the screen...very rudely, too. I was able to get it replaced, fortunately...I would have stopped shopping there permanently, if they hadn't. Never take these things for granted.

@@rars0n I only sympathize because I used to have an old android that would swell and pop the back off. if the back were more solid and made of glass I'm sure it would do this. My apple watch also had a recall for the sapphire screen for a similar issue. Apple replaced it twice and said the battery swells and cracks the screen. In my case it only popped it off.

To the roofer: get an old school flip phone, there is a lot more area around the screen to protect it. I dropped my old Motorola off the roof and it survived with a few gouges.

To be fair, during the 4 years I used my previous phone I dropped it multiple times, threw it across the room onto my couch and opened bottles with it and the screen is still fine. I only replaced it because it wasn't able to run todays updated apps anymore, otherwise i'd still be using it.

Absolutely my favourite episode of yours thus far, and I’ve listened to probably 50 or 60 of yours. Having worked in customer service, not repair, this feeling you have a bad customer is lying to you rather than being honest really hits Home. I also saw the CBC episode that you, recap was appalled at the time of seeing it also. As a Canadian I have a lot of respect for CBC and the integrity reporting, however this particular episode is some of the poorest reporting I’ve seen from CBC in my lifetime. I wish we lifted a world where people more readily excepted responsibility for their mistakes and decisions rather than making up stories of convenience and lying. It would be so much easier and feel so much better to help others who admit to having done something and being upset by it and needing help for it rather than, lying to get an outcome

The main reason why I hate these kinds of "public survey" spiels because you inherently attract people with devices that are not worth fixing or not realistically expected to be fixed.

It doesn't help that over 50% of people who take things in for repair lie about how they got the problem in the first place, then add that people are more likely to lie while being recorded for the news. It's a recipe for disaster.

Phone gets so hot that it cracks the screen. Proceeds to wrap it in a towel. Also, didn't look like it had a case. 😂

The crack was caused by a drop, as evidenced by the guy's own picture that he took of it. At 3:21 you can clearly see the side of the phone is damaged exactly where the crack starts.

If a phone gets so hot that the glass cracks, then... well then the battery should have "exploded". Lithium ion batteries cant get very hot. I'm assuming that the glass can handle more heat the the battery. Edit, the cpu should also thermal throttle, or the phone should turn off automatically to prevent anything from going wrong, like battery "exploding"

@@harrythompson5634 - his kid, in these comments said that he's left it in the truck on hot days (35c). Inside the car can get to over 65c or 150f). I suspect that the heat warped the case and caused the crack or primed it to crack at the next bump. Also, the chip in the picture looks an awful lot like MY phone that I cracked trying to open it before realizing that it didn't have a removable battery or a case designed to be opened at all.

I didn't even notice it until he showed the back of his new phone, and I was like "Wait, I thought he said the screen cracked?" Sure enough, looking back he was showing the back of his phone. Not only that, but the picture he took of his cracked "screen" clearly shows the impact damage that caused the crack. At 3:21 you can see the frame damage on the right side right where the crack started, classic example of drop damage.

Yeah, it contains blotware (or whatever) and it's not private, but still, you can upgrade. I know the tpm or whatever problem, but that's a 2016-2018 (i don't remember) feature in a lot of cpus that you can activate in the bios. Also, it's for increasing security, so they can reduce ramsomware atacks... Sorry for my trashy english. it's my third language and I don't have my usual autocorrector. (Google's one is in my native language somehow, and I can't change it)

​@@---jj9lf I've worked on a fair number of computers. I ran across 4 cases where Windows 10 significantly impaired the PC's operation. This is just going to increase with W11 because they're flat out saying the TPM is required, and if you don't have one, it's going to emulate the TPM with software. The expected performance hit of the latter is between 20-30%, which, if you didn't know, is ABSURD. Even the Spectre/Meltdown CPU bugs didn't do that.

What i don't understand... the internal CPU gets up to 95c tops... putting out about 5w of heat. That's apparently enough to crack the screen... but a heatgun that gets hot enough to melt glue will take ages to get the screen hot enough to crack it... And the excuse of "It was the battery expanding" Yeah? You know once they expand, they dont deflate, they stay expanded. Does your phone rock like a boat on a flat surface? No? Its not the battery.

@@askmyteapot The only device I'm aware of that the manufactur doesn't acknowledge a problem and that has a common battery inflation problem is the iPod nanos. Dankpods, an iPod KZread channel has a lot of nanos that do this as they age. They make a mark on the screen and become a potential fire hazard.

@@WAncouvOR and iPhone 5c’s. I have four of them with expanded battery’s. I buy them because they don’t count hotspot data usage. I live in the woods and pop my SIM card into the 5c for unlimited data. I use almost a terabyte a month through hot spot. It’s actually very fast. 50 up and like 7 down.

Here's what apple was like in 2007, I bought the iPhone when it came out, about a month later they lowered the price by $100, so then they sent me and everyone who bought one $100 apple gift card, that is pretty crazy to think, then about a year later my speaker was blown out because I played music so much, I contacted apple to tell them my speaker blew and they immediately mailed me a box with prepaid shipping so that I could send them the phone, I mailed the phone and they sent me a brand new phone back. Keep in mind I didn't have any extra warranty or insurance , just the standard manufacture warranty

The $100 gift card seems like a planned move knowing these companies. And if it wasn't planned, it was pretty genius. It's actually pretty genius either way. You get the illusion of getting your "money back" and you give it right back to them by spending their gift card...on their store. They lose out on the maybe 10% of people who don't use the gift card, but they get their money back, and fucking awesome PR.

I was a car mechanic for many years. Getting details from customers can be frustrating. Especially when you do a repair, and they bring it back 1 month later with another completely unrelated issue and say, " It didn't start doing this till after i brought it here." Im like ,hey, I replaced your timing belt, and now your breaks are squeeking because they're worn out. They'll swear it's still my problem even though they refused the full inspection at the time to save money.

I do maintenance for rentals and when they start telling me what the didn't do before I even look at the problem, they're lying. I do appreciate you telling that story we all have to face regularly in a time when it's like beyond rude to suggest someone is lying when they are lying. And I don't care if someone lies in general, that's their business, but if you want to help get your thing fixed quickly and cheaply don't give me bad data. But then again, their denial usually tells me exactly what they did.

Customer: My phone screen cracked on it's own Louis: "[Ninety nine point] NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN"

I had 3 smartphones that lasted 5 years each. The only reason I upgraded to a new one was that the new apps needed a new version of android and the old phone could not update to a version that was new and worked. My girlfriend changes her phone once a year because she treats it like the phone is a pet rock.

Those easily noticeable scuffs and dents on the side of the S20, surely had to be cause from overheating and not being dropped. I don’t understand why people who buy a phone that exceeds $1,000 won’t drop $10 for a case.

Yeah,the S20 did not have a case. Plus using it on a roof/hot day would definitely cause the phone to over-heat. Why not use a hands free Bluetooth earbuds/or a smartwatch.

As a Canadian tax payer i would like to inform you that this is what government funded media looks like. Disgraceful.

He is roofer (working high up there...) He has other visible cracks (probably the phone felt many times already) He does construction (hummers, screws, metal etc always around him, his cloths, his pockets....)

What I noticed with my own phone, which I bought used and precracked...You can can get a hairline crack on your phone and not notice, and then through heating and cooling the crack can expand, spread and become more apparent. It is not that the heat is cracking the phone, it is you cracking the phone, but heat can make a small hairline crack go from not noticeable to large and hard to miss.

"So what were you doing when it stopped working?" "I DINT DO NUFFING!!!" "No, I mean, how were you using it before it started acting up?" "I DINT BRAKE IT!!!" "GotDammit..."

In terms of the battery not holding a charge and the screen cracking "on its own", I've had that happen to me BUT I'm not talking about a brand new phone. My screen cracking had to do with the battery inside expanding a few years. I've had many cellphones and digital camera batteries expand. Honest and real story. My cellphone was charging and attached to an air vent mount while I was driving and I was charging the phone at the same time while using Google Maps as a GPS on the phone. The phone was not new and while driving, the battery expanded inside to such a degree that I heard a "pop" or "bang" noise and part of the screen popped off the phone itself. Due to the glue keeping the screen stuck to the phone for the most part, only one of the corners of the screen popped off the phone but the screen was still attached to the phone itself. However, in another case, the glue that was keeping the screen stuck to the phone was so good that it didn't "give" when the battery expanded and when the battery expanded to such a degree, the screen and the middle part underneath the screen started to expand to such a degree that the screen cracked on its own without it falling on the floor or hitting an object since the adhesive glue which was keeping the screen stuck to the phone, kept all the corners/sides of the screen attached while the battery underneath the screen expanded. HOWEVER as I mentioned, these didn't happen with new phones and happened to my old phones.

@@breakcoregirlxd Seen the laptop and decided to say the same. I have seen tons of those Hp laptops with nvidia graphics where the chip lifted from the board. They could be temp fixed with heat and shimming the chip. There was a big stink over the failure rate of these laptops and they attempted to fix it in later models by gluing the chip to the board.

TV race sure are built different. Seeing traditional TV content with 0 depth side by side with Louis's in-depth and insightful content really makes me wonder how people could put up with watching TV.

"Hey, check out my new pho....whoops. cracked it." "You just got it. Tell them it did it on its own"

​@@iddan1205 < The primary cause of "my screen cracked on it's own" is likely a pressure crack when it's leaned against while in the pocket or purse. Now, whether the customer wants to admit it or not, screens do not crack on their own just like the windows on your home don't crack spontaneously without some external forces (pressure or a rock).

The way this show is edited and produced is incredibly annoying.

@@noleftturnunstoned I'm not trying to say that American TV is good, but you underestimate how global these industries are. Very few things theses days can be considered the product of a single country and its culture. A better way to look at it may be that the demand for this kind of presentation was first taken advantage of in America and perhaps the demand is larger. As this style is adopted by Canandian firms it is simply an indication that they have realized that the market exists in Canada too. Personally I think this trend is a dying one but based on the timeline so far it will die out in America first and persist in the countries that adopted it later for longer. The point I am trying to make is that the people who make this kind of stuff are not "Americans". The LG overheating to the point where It cracks, I've seen it happen in real time, but it wasn't the front screen, it was the glass over the camera. I was standing there talking to a coworker. His phone was laying flat on it's face charging, and he was telling me about his new phone. I was looking at it when I actually SAW the glass on the camera crack.

LG really seems to have had "a few" cracking problems. I've had it on an G3 several years ago. Display cracked under moderate thermal stress (about -5°C) - probably because of of some prior built up mechanical stress - but remained usable until replacement could be fitted. Thankfully it had been quite easy to source a new display unit. Can't say that about every manufacturer and model.

Imagine if someone who he did the roof for calls him again about a hole in the roof. "I was just living under my roof like always but my house was getting colder and all of a sudden a hole appeared in my roof." Would he stand behind his work there and repair it for free?

​@@akamemurasame4527 I've been in the phone repair business for over 20 years, and there's nothing more irking than when a customer claims that the screen cracked on it's own, which is usually caused by a pressure when it's leaned against it in a pocket or purse. I just tell them, ok, well the windows on your home don't just cracks on their own now do they?! I have no problems replacing it if it turns out to be a manufacturing defect, but will not do it on blatant lies.

​@@killertruth186 < In over 20 years of running a phone repair shop, I've never seen a single phone screen breaking by itself while sittin on my work desk, or for that matter any windows in my home unless there's some external force (rock, pressure, extreme heat/cold, etc). It just doesn't happen, there's no reason for it to happen. Moreover phone screens have multiple laminated layers (lcd+digitizer+backing layer) which reinforced it even more than a simple pane of glass, making it even stronger. If anyone says otherwise, they are either lying or are simply ignorant and don't realize that the phone got crushed in their pocket or purse (aka pressure crack).

Now we know why Louis does KZread videos, he's secretly breaking our devices so that we need to get them repaired! ;)

Glass phones drive me nuts. I currently have an S8 active, and I love that is has a leather type material on the back instead of glass.

In laptops, you can still replace them but you have to open the bottom panel and disconnect it... little more work but very easy. I wish smartphones used more durable hybrid plastic magnesium bodies instead of metal and glass.

It is refreshing to see someone (Louis) just call it how they see it. This is great insight into a weak episode of CBC marketplace. People need to grow up. Stop dropping phones and crying foul.

I bought a used Acer from CL. I was in too much of a hurry to get a 17" Laptop. It's a cheap Laptop, and I saw this as soon as I booted it in the Store I bought it from. I bought it anyway - because I said I would (I'm like that). I researched the Product (V31) and found a CPU on CL that seemed like it would fit. I'd never done this before, with a Laptop. I got it done; I went from a DuoCore to an 8-Core i7. It pretty much Rocks now, I'm very pleased with the overall Price, but no HD Video on this Board. Oh Well.

This news piece just seems badly made. They just half-assed through the entire process.

Ricardo didn't have the benefit of hindsight and seeing this video. His issue was genuine. Apple "replaced" it so they too his old phone and they swear in their recycling so there is that (bullshit but not his fault).

25:50 "Here's your computer working" (on an external monitor)... Louis, you really know your shit. It's awesome to see a tech actually cite chips and their specific circuit functions rather than pablum blather smoke screen. It's awesome to see someone that cares about what they are doing!

Based on my experience with Samsung phones, if it fell from a roof it would have been a lot worse. I set one down a little too hard (face down) without a case and it broke the LCD/LED behind the glass. Same thing for one that fell 3-4 feet out of my bag in a parking lot. The glass appeared fine (maybe some hairline cracks) but the screens were completely dead and the repair would have been at least $200.

@@lq7777 yeh. basically this. anyone that thinks it "fell" off a roof when we were working clearly doesnt realize how high up it is. at minimum my dad is 6ft so the pockets are ~4 feet above the ground. then if hes standing on a 15ft high roof.... thats 19 feet. how is a phone falling from 19feet only going to get hairline cracks

My dad said his phone screen cracked on its own, I then watched him using its flashlight underneath his tractor to repair it and resting wrenches on it!

@@Clay3613 I agree with you on the phone, but not on the tools. Cheap tools snap when used heavily and can't be relied on, and the good tools earn their keep. I've got a Bahco adjustable wrench that is about 60 years old and has never let me down!

Can't understand why a roofer would carry a $1200 phone on a jobsite. I am an electrician and use a $75 Dollar Store Motorola phone that I use on the job, had it for 3 months now and it still looks new. Whatever he doing to that phone should be a clue that he has the wrong phone for the job, needs a protective case for it, or is a clutz.

Dude is a roofer who says he brings his phone with him while roofing. 100% he dropped it while roofing. Dude needs to get a second line for his business and get one of the many industrial phones that can be dropped from a plane and be fine.

I used to have some sort of variation of this laptop a long time ago and tried playing Minecraft on it... that thing got so hot it nearly burned my hand lmao (especially because of the metal chassis on the top)

if you pause at 3:21 you can see the point where his phone hit something hard enough to crack the back. The pressure mark is right above his thumb. or at 3:22 where they show it right in the middle of the right-hand side zoomed-in LOL.

The same thing happened at a motorcycle dealer I worked at. Young kids would buy brand new tiny single cylinder 300cc fuel injected bikes, put straight pipes on them with 0 restriction and wouldn't tune them (would end up running lean) or break in the engine properly. We warned them it would blow up and void the warranty, but sure enough they would put it on anyways, ride the piss out of the rev limiter, drop the clutch and pin it on the freeway with a passenger then come back 300 miles later on a tow truck with metal shavings in the oil and no compression and say, "I was just riding to the grocery store and the engine blew up, OUT OF NOWHERE!"

A guy who works at heights, a roofer, bought an 1800 dollar phone and didn't think a 50 dollar hard case was a good idea.

He probably got the $0 bell phone deal and would be offered an Otterbox Defender in the Bell store at time of purchase and its over $90 with tax. We're talkin' normies here not informed consumers because that's what the show is based on.

I work in cell phone sales myself, we had someone come in saying the phone we sold them had chips taken out of the glass, meanwhile during the sale the customer told the rep he worked with concrete and was hard on phones. Manager offered to take a look at it but obviously refused to replace the device. Dude flips out and starts recording her, threatening to post on social media. I've sold phones for about 9 years, and ive seen a screen break on its own once, and in this particular case it was a swollen battery that pushed the screen out of its housing. If you break your phone within weeks or a couple months of having it, be honest, and you're more likely to get a favorable resolution.

I had a phone back in the day, that gave itself water damage sitting on a dry room on a table over night. Hadn't even been raining, no moisture at all.. woke up didn't work, went to store and they said "water damage". Either way, I did get a refund for another phone, at a place that didn't normally do so... there is always expectations.

3:45 My iPhone 3G screen cracked by itself back in early '09. Was a cold day and I sat it in the passenger seat when I hopped in the car, put the heater on, and after a 5min drive I heard a faint popping sound... thermal shock. The Telco didn't give me much of a hassle as it was a known issue at the time.
