Let's Upgrade an Original Xbox! - TSOP Flash & Clock Capacitor Removal - Part 1

Ойындар

I decided to take a crack at this original Xbox console I had sitting here and get it up to speed! What we have here is 1.2 revision of the Xbox that has already been softmodded prior to me turning on the camera. Softmods are great and convenient but... With just a bit more effort we can do so much more! What I did in this video was take the console apart, clean it up, enable write access to the TSOP/BIOS, remove the leaky clock capacitor, and flash a custom BIOS to the motherboard.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Well... Later. My plans for this console aren't finalized yet because of a snag with the upgraded parts I ordered, but fear not - there will be a part 2! I split this up as there was a bit of a wait between the recording sessions, and this might be a good way to chronicle the upgrade journey.
Check out Slot1Gamer's AWESOME TSOP flashing tutorial here:

MrMario, you probably know this by now. So i will mention this for the viewers. The 1.6 has the clock cap as well. It is located by the IDE port. They moved it and replaced it with one that doesnt fail as much as the old ones. "DO NOT REMOVE THOSE CAPS" You will kill your 1.6 box. Great videos man keep it up.

4 years later but I just wanted to let you know why the flux made it harder to bridge those points, it’s because flux helps join solder to the copper pads and it basically sucks it away from the board to the individual copper pad.

Please make sure you put electrical tape or something to keep the solder points from touching your hdd and shorting out the ide to sata adapter or it will fry your hdd and converter and please please do that cuz its free insurance against frying your stuff cuz some of the adapters have insulation where it goes into the hdd. Thanks and really enjoying your vids!! :)

You're welcome! I knew they were different but thought it was a recommendation to upgrade the cable, not a requirement. The original is fine for IDE drives, SATA needs that extra power from an 80 wire cable.

I just did a TSOP flash for a co-worker. I couldn't find my iron. I used a conductive pen instead. I bridged the points on a 1.0, let dry for 10 minutes. Booted up and raincoat allowed me to dump and flash the bios.

A bit of a quick tip for anyone trying to do this for the first time. There is also another method of bridging the two points together without the use of solder. You can actually use some conductive paint to bridge the two solder points together and I found it to be way easier. It's also safer to do as it won't damage your Xbox if you mess up and end up breaking the solder pads on the motherboard. You can easily just wipe it off with some isopropyl alcohol and just reapply it. This second method is perfect for people who are not good at soldering such as me. I was able to flash the EvoX bios to an Xbox with this method and it was awesome. Great video man!

If your HDD dies in an unmodded xbox, you can recover. Read the EEPROM by connectng a Raspberry PI to the I2C pins of the LPC header (any version of motherboard) copy the eeprom.bin to your PC, use XboxHdM32-USB to make an lock the new drive (This will take hours). Install the new drive and you are good to go :).

Good job getting one with a Sammy drive, as they're the best drive with this console. The scene for the OG Xbox was THE best scene of all consoles. Homebrew and hardware mods released for it was insane. I still have my 1.0 somewhere in storage, with the capacitor removed of course.

I need to get back my original 1.0 and remove the clock capacitor! I would agree with it being one of the best, I didn't get to really get my hands dirty with hardware mods until 2016 and I love the freedom of information the scene has. Lots of good sources for Xbox info, and people all on board for sharing. Also still seeing active interest and development on 16 year old hardware is awesome.

Just fyi ide cables don't carry power just data the 40 vs 80 is just doubling wire to eliminate crosstalk between the wires so in 40 wire 1 wire per pin in 80 2 wires per pin in the xbox sata hdd's send data too fast even with a ide to sata converter so to fix that you upgrade to a 80 wire cable for fast communication between the hdd and the motherboard and with that speed come crosstalk which again is why we double to wires

So... regarding that bloody IDE cable... I did not know a 40 pin cable might not be efficient for some hard drives. I guess I KINDA lucked out by accidentally breaking the old cable. One of the plastic clips snapped right off when I tried to unplug the cable from the PATA/SATA adaptor. So brittle. Anywho, currently I'm using a thin 80 pin cable which I had to twist around to make it fit. Any idea if there are any people that sell custom 80-pin IDE cables which are exactly like the original Xbox ones?

  • @meetoo594

Pretty much what you said, the drive and motherboard have a unique matching key that `unlocks` the drive at boot if the keys match. If the keys dont match it throws a `your xbox needs servicing` message up and wont do anything else. The modchip in mine just bypasses the check so you can use any drive you like.

If I understand correctly, ISO reading from HDD is one advantage (no dealing with long file names). What else? Does anyone have suggestions for 80-wire cables that are better "Xbox" configured than the standard computer ones? It seems you have to fold the cables various times due to the spacing between connectors, On an Xbox, does it matter which end goes to the motherboard? Thanks!

In short you get the benefits of a modchip without actually obtaining and installing a chip itself. You cannot read ISO files on an Xbox. I linked in the description the 80-wire IDE cable I used that works in part 2, folding it is inevitable.

At 14:16 it should be noted when you said you lifted one of the MB pads and had to put that wire there. Since you lifted that pad on the MB if you tried to turn the Xbox on it would have FRAGED (Flashing Red and Green Light) as one of my first attempts at soldering the two points on an Xbox I ended up ripping one of the pads off the MB and when I tried to turn on the system it FRAGed. But once I wired the alternative points it was saved. Just figured I should point that out.

Hi! Great video. I'm just thinking about getting an original Xbox to mod, and I'd like to have your opinion on a few things since your advice has helped me in the past. Which revision of the Xbox should I try to look for? Can I replace the clock capacitor with a new one from a good brand like Nichikon to retain original functionality? Or is it possible to replace the capacitor with a non-electrolytic type of capacitor? And lastly, which mod chip do you think I should get for hardmodding the console? I saw your video on the X3 being very expensive, so what would be a better option? Thanks a bunch.

1.0-1.5 revision. You can replace the clock capacitor, but no real need to. If you go with a 1.0-1.5 revision, you can enable write access to the TSOP flash and flash a custom BIOS directly to the console. No need for a chip at that point.
