Let's Unpack & Organize My Makeup Collection *chill & chatty*

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Unpacking my makeup (finally!) after moving across the country! I got a new desk/vanity so I finally felt ready to start figuring out my makeup storage. I don't have a set of drawers for makeup yet (really trying to take it slow with furnishing the apartment!) so I got some dollar tree bins to use temporarily. I think this is going to make a great makeshift makeup storage situation for the time being!

It literally took us YEARS to fully furnish our house. We were young and broke and made do with hand me downs or without until we figured out our style and collected pieces we liked. I think this age of technology and consumerism has made people believe they can have everything immediately. I purposely build delayed gratification into my life to combat that.

We still don't have a bed (mattress and foundation are on the floor) after 10 years because every time we think we can afford one we like (not buying one just to get one), some financial emergency comes up!

That makes me feel a lot better! I’m going from a one bedroom apartment to buying a 3-4 bedroom house within the year and I’ve been panicking about furnishing it. I’m fairly young so my stuff is all secondhand. This really spoke to me so thank you!

@@portiapans537 be proud of yourself for buying a house! It takes time to figure out how you want to use the space and also what your decorating style might be (we found ours became inspired by the house itself). You will get there!

We are in our second (and forever) home, and we still have several hand me downs that we are making use of until we find something we love. I also love going to places like the Habitat for Humanity Restore, St. Vincent de Paul, Goodwill, and garage sales to find the furniture for my home. Another thing I can recommend is if your furniture is a nice shape and sturdy but you don't like the color or fabric, look for an upholsterer in your area, because they can recover your furniture in a different fabric and bring it back to life! Your house doesn't need to look like an interior designer lives there, but if that is a priority for you, there are all sorts of eco-friendly and low cost alternatives to buying things brand new. And the other benefit of buying used furniture, besides saving it from a landfill, is that you have to wait until you find the right thing, you can't just go to a store and custom order the thing you are looking for. That's one of the ways I build delayed gratification into my life.

My Kosas foundation had a similar smell straight out of the box, so did the brow gel. It’s something I’ve noticed in a lot of their products, I think it might have something to do with the lack of preservatives or other fragrances to mask it. I haven’t had any skin issues despite using the products for a while now.

Idk if I would risk using that foundation... I mean using makeup isn't just for the final product, a lot of the value comes from the usage of the item and how it makes you feel. I wouldn't want to put something fishy on my skin.

Most common iron oxides smell metally or rusty. I don't know of a reason why it should change smell over time... Something about kosas response smells fishy tbh... But you can try patch test and see if it changed consistency.

About the foundation, I'd probably do a patch test on my arm before trying it on my face 🙂 I would recommend a shelf for the rest of your makeup rather than drawers 😊 It's so much easier to see everything you have instead of a product ends in the back of a drawer and you forget about it 🙂 I love my setup (I know it wouldn't work ad well for you with all your filming gear in front of your vanity), it's a desk with a top shelf where I have 108 eyeshadow palettes and then on the desk I have 5 small acrylic drawers (2 drawers in each) that contains lipsticks, lipliners, liquid eyeshadows, brow products, eyeliners and the jewellery that I use the most. Then on top of those I have 4 lipstick organisers and one organiser for foundation, concealers, sprays, powders, primers and mascara. Then next to my desk I have a large acrylic organiser that is open in the top with all my blushes, highlighters, bronzers and contour products. The others drawers are filled with Super Shock Shadows and smaller palettes that can't fit in the shelf 😀 My point is that I can see 98% of my entire collection, it makes me happy and I'll never forget about any of it 😊😁

Yeah…instinct tells me that iron oxide doesn’t suddenly start smelling like fish. I would bet that the cleaner formula didn’t hold up in the heat during summer transport and went off. Maybe they can guarantee a 12 month shelf life in a temp controlled environment, but they should be far more careful about guaranteed longevity of their products if they are this sensitive. I’d discontinue use and spend some time with your other favorites. 😊

That foundation has gone bad. Iron oxide doesn’t smell fishy! They use less robust preservatives and I would toss it. Trying to be tactful about the “clean” makeup companies like Kosas. It’s great that they try but the reality is these companies use less effective preservatives. And their lab staff that told the phone support person that are making excuses at best. Rust (iron oxide) has a distinct smell and it isn’t a fishy odour. Fish smells come from the breakdown of some fatty acids and rancid oils are not healthy.

I bought a nail polish organizing case for my nail polishes. I know it seems silly to buy something so specific but 1) you could definitely store other small items in there if you wanted to and 2) it encourages me to keep my collection in check. Mine has 48 slots but im sure you could find smaller. (I know I have a lot of nail polish.)

What I’ve learned as I’ve come into adulthood in terms of shopping for long term items like clothing, furniture, even makeup is to *never* settle, *never* compromise (at least with yourself, with someone you live with a little compromise is healthy lol) and only purchase things you are genuinely excited about, even if that means spending a little more to get the perfect thing. Congrats on the move! If I remember right as I’m typing this you’ve moved to Seattle, so the thrifting scene is probably insane there. You should keep your eye out on things like facebook marketplace and thrift stores for really unique or special furniture pieces. And I wouldn’t even shoot for three months to be fully furnished, that will probably fly by before you know it! I’d say even 6 months to a year depending on the items. Also wanted to suggest looking into DIY bed frames/headboards! You could really save money there or just get something that’s one of a kind and perfectly fits both of your tastes ☺️

Congratulations on the move ❤ I can’t wait to see the next videos in your new place, especially the organisation part - by the way, if you think that you have enough room on the desk, I truly recommend the Moppe drawers from Ikea - when I got bored of the colour, I actually painted it with my least favourite makeup products and sealed everything with top coat for nails (I had roughly 10 full bottles received as promotion with an order). By the way, I am keeping my foundations in the same position and it is very hard to track the amount left, especially because I want to start my first project pan in January - do you have any tips? Thank you! Oh, and Merry Christmas 🎄 as I’m watching this video on December 24th 😸

The tiny pineapple cat bed is super adorable. 🥺 It must be a relief that your makeup made the move ok. I admire your approach to buying furniture. I am lucky I was able to borrow a bunch of stuff from family whilst I saved up to buy what I wanted for some things. However i do have some items which I rushed to purchase without thinking about my long term needs/wants and which I regret, but it feels super wasteful to get rid of it. And the money is already spent which also feels bad 😅 That kopari sunscreen is the sort of ultra shiny I love. 😶
