Let's Turn Some Sycamore! - Wood Turning
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I really like to turn Sycamore. It's a beautiful wood with interesting grain patterns and is often spalted to enhance the overall look even more. Though hard, it turns beautifully and frequently gives a warm look to a piece. Finished with Feed & Wax.

So glad you found this piece of London Plane Sycamore to your liking, Phil. The bowl turned out great (as expected). And how fun that the grain, spalting , and character of the wood lends itself to so many different visual treats. I think the old woman might even have an eagle on her head. Hope you like the rest of the wood as well!

Phil, since I found your channel, I don't miss your videos. The reason being, you turn pieces that many people would use for fire wood. As my neighbor says, you have the eye for wood, plus I can tell that you listen to the wood as you work. I had apiece that laid on my floor for two years before it spoke to me

I just received and set up my new 18-40EVS. I have only turned 2 pieces with it so far, but I love it! Quite a bit different than my old Harbor Freight lathe. You're work inspires me to try techniques I haven't tried before. Great work as usual! Thank you.

Jon M, I rescued the sycamore logs from being sent to a chipper because they were considered “too gnarly” for splitting for firewood. What saw was beautiful burl, figure and character in the wood. All of it found its way to my place! Had to share some of it with Phil!
Another inspirational piece from Shady Acres with Phil guiding the process. Along the live edge there are the eyes of a lion watching you. Thanks again for the inspiration and the weekly chat. Take care, stay safe and keep on turning.

You are most welcome, Tuffy! This piece had Phil’s name on it as soon as I set hands on it. Glad he agreed and had fun playing with it. Wood just seems to find me, and my collection grows almost daily. Way more than I could ever turn by myself, so sharing wood is my way of supporting turners who share with others.
Spectacular Sycamore bowl! The grain and colors in this bowl are amazing. Phil, you really know how to bring out the best in your bowl blanks. By the way, I’m glad I’m not the only one that see’s faces and creatures in the wood! Thanks for sharing your work.

🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil when the title came up saying sycamore I thought it would turn out quite plain but I'm amazed at all the patterning in the grain. The volcanos looked like mount Fuji to me. As you turned the piece I could see a manta ray and on the bottom an elephant. Great piece of turning keep it up. Thanks Phil for my weekly fix at Shady Acres. 🇺🇲

Hey Phil, I had the exact same noise with my lathe a while back. Of course, I've had handles come loose too, bet that wasn't it. This noise sounded exactly like yours. The headstock was making the noise. It felt tight, but I gave the tightening lever an extra wack with a mallet and it was gone, never to come back. I chased it for a long time, even replaced the bearings. Just proves it's always the simplest thing we overlook. Great bowl man, take care, Larry

Hi Phil.....you have got to be the Clyde Beatty of wood turning! (I have been watching a ton of old movie serials from the 1930s and 40s). This is a beautiful project unique in so many ways both inside (great grain pattern) and outside (native roughness). My grandparents had a row of Sycamores surrounding their house and I will always remember their stately appearance....who knew they could be that nice under the bark! Best to you my friend.
