I know what you are having problems with considering that I started skating in 1960 and slowly became aware of the unfairness, bias, and elitist attitudes present via the people governing the USFSA. Why they dropped the A I don't know, however, the pettiness has not gone away over the years from the participants and their parents. I am not saying that everyone is like that. It only takes a few to spoil the whole thing. There is now a whole adult skating thing that has taken place through the perserverance of 2 ladies in particular. Otherwise adult skaters, if they weren't in dance, were sort of shut out and ignored. The skating association itself has a very sordid past which I found out only when I became an adult although I saw it as I was growing up. If you want to skate do it for you, not these people, because they will stress you out. I don't like the way skating has turned out these days, however, the problem is many times the type of person who really gets involved with the organzation, judging, the club, etc. If skating teaches you anything, it teaches you that it isn't exactly a fair playing field and there are unfair biases. That is why I refused to be a judge. I didn't feel that I could do it fairly. They try to squeeze out certain people. They have nothing going for them at this point as far as I can see because after you get your gold medal, you don't have any lucrative contracts or ice shows to go into so mostly it is being a coach or getting another career. Disney on Ice or small ice shows on cruise ships are your only outlets and you aren't going to be making a lot of money considering what becoming really good actually costs. And there are pitfalls along the way, like injuries and mental breakdowns. This is still a very expensive sport with many coaching fees going over $100/hr. You have to have money or someone supporting you to go far. And it still has its' snobbishness. What really gives one incentive is when one has a buddy or fellow skaters who are supportive and make you want to enjoy and progress along with them and you help each other. That's the motivation. Too many people are more into themselves. That makes you feel like you can take it or leave it without any regret. The motivation goes away. You have to get your head in the right place. You have to have the right state of mind also, if you are going to take it seriously. It requires mental toughness and the ability to block out everything except your mission. Not everyone can do that and especially on queue.

Center your joy and happiness? YES! I just found your channel; YT algorithm works after a few years of watching figure skating channels - who knew? I hope you keep skating for fun while you continue to figure out what else you need for joy and happiness to be at the center of your days.

I think your idea sounds great. I'm glad you've spent so much time thinking about what would be good or bad for you. Looking forward to whatever you decide to talk about :)

First of all, I love your shirt. Also I love your ideas for your channel! Stick to doing what brings you joy :). Share if it brings you joy and don’t if it doesn’t. Your mental health is most important, remember that. A side thought: I’ve recently become very interested in the world of wild ice skating. Like skating on frozen lakes and stuff. Seems to be a fascinating and pretty diverse “genre” of skating. Because I’m right there with you on your feelings towards US figure skating, and I’m always trying to get around them haha 😅

I do admit the majority of our kids classes are predominantly white or Asian, but when it comes to the adult classes there is much more obvious diversity in ethnicity, ages, body shapes, dancing experience etc. We all get our asses kicked equally by our teacher's combinations though haha. I also supplement with the kids classes and feel very welcomed there too!

I'm still skating! Albeit not as much as I used to and with a Theatre on Ice team that just wrapped up (new video soon 😝). I'm trying to get back into my dancing roots but just recalibrating for now

I do not enjoy being in the US Figure Skating either. To me it doesn't enhance the pleasure of skating but rather adds overhead. As an adult skater, I skate for fun. Anything getting in the way of me enjoying skating, i just kick to the side. I also try to focus on skating itself and not skate for a purpose or a mission. I hope you find the love of skating again and have fun again. I subscribed your channel for figure skating content. Watching a fellow adult skater on youtube gives me a sense of community. When you started to introduce the woke discussions to the channel, I was mildly irritated and chose to not watch those videos. I stayed subscribed expecting more skating content. But it sounds like the channel is taking another direction. So i'm unsubscribing. I agree that there is not much figure skating content for non-skaters. As a community we are not doing a good job marketing our sport. There is a void to fill. I wish you and your channel lots of success making content that's authentic to your true self.
