Let's Talk Spacers!
Ойын-сауық
Both the comfort and the confusion with weaving lies in the fact that there are SO many ways to do it! And today's topic is no exception.
I'm talking about spacers. At the start of the project, the warp yarns are all bunched together and we want them to be evenly spaced apart.
So in episode 114, I'm giving you some ideas on how to achieve this result and get you weaving! 'Cause that is the good stuff, isn't it?
Not only will I give you ideas on how to spread out your warp yarns, I'll show you how I tackle it. Then, it's just up to you to decide how you want to approach your next project! You've got this. Happy Weaving!

I use cotton blend clothesline. It's about the size of a pencil in diameter.

Oooh, clever!! That's great, Jessica!
What a great idea
I use whatever yarn is left over from a previous project that is still on a bobbin. I hate throwing it away but also hate trying to unwind it onto some spare cone to reuse that little bit.

Hi! I used to use one inch wide stiff card strips, but now use the one ince=h wide plastic slats from an old set of blinds that no longer worked! Quick and can be used an infinite number of times! Love your videos--very informative, and love your presentation stye too!

Just to be clear, I do this on my floor loom--an 8 shaft, 32" Gilmore. Tapestry is all together different. I follow Rebecca Mezoff's method.

This is what I do. I’ve not been brave enough to start my project weave right after that though, I do a few rows of oddball same thickness yarn after as waste too. Then go on to my good stuff.

There are lots of options, my friend!
I love how you alternate as you put in your TP as though you are weaving, even though it's just unconnected strips and you could go left to right each time. you can't fight nature! 🤣

Ha! Isn't that funny? I don't even think about it. But when I press the treadle on the left for plain weave, then the shuttle starts on the left, and visa versa! Ah, the beauty of a habit...

I find that if I don't follow the pattern at the start, I make mistakes shortly after. Consistency builds the habit for my brain.
This is interesting and creative!👍

My hubby calls the cheap TP John Wayne Tp because "It Doesn't take (Censored) off of anyone" After seeing someone online using long cardboard strips I did a variant. I had an old mini blind we were replacing. I took it apart and use the slats from it.

Haha the many uses of tp! I do have to use that brand, especially if you have a septic/aeration system..thanks for the idea, you're soo good sharing the info. Thanks as always 😊

Ah, yes!! My sister used to use the thinnest kind out there for exactly that reason!
Have a large skein of high vision orange aran weight polyester for this. Made knit hats for hunting and still had plenty left. Use it for my warp ties too. Thought I'd get rid of it that way, but it's stubbornly reusable. No one's lost the hunting caps either. Might try the tp next time.

Will do in the new year. Very busy with festive season guests.... So in my quiet time definitely.
I love the idea of using tp. Cheap, easy to use and compostable too. I do have some chunky yarn that I’m slowly using up and off cut warps that I use on smaller projects

It's a great way to use old/unwanted yarn, for sure!!
Hello good morning from the netherlands. I once bought a big ball of chunky yarn, its about as thick as your toiletpaper, and i just keep using this. But i do smaller bundels so i only need to do 3 rows max. It is easy to pull out at the end. When i do tapestry weaving on my tapestry loom i need to do it different because first it needs tension rods, then i use cardboard strips. My tapestryframe needs more stiff spacers so soft strips of any material would not work well enough. It a whole different thing😁. Btw i love your vids, i have learned so much from you being a newbie Weaver (7 months). So thanks a keep going pkease

I've been using toilet paper for years and don't even remember where I got the idea, but it's my favorite too. I use whatever brand is in the house and it usually only takes three rows of the good stuff. Those who try it will find it has some other advantages too.

Nice!!!
I use what I call "slicky cords," i.e., nylon cord which matches the weft weight fairly closely. It's very easy to withdraw, and can be used over and over. I generally weave an inch or two at the proper spacing following an inch or so of slicky-cord throws, then hemstitch and then I pull the slicky cords before continuing to weave.

Ha!! Nice!
I have used a variety of things. For awhile I was using t-shirt yarn, which is a chunky cotton. I’ve done it with stash yarn that is about the same thickness as the weaving yarn or perhaps a bit thicker. I’ve done it with the actual weaving yarn I am going to use. I often hemstitch at the start of a project so I like to use something that will behave well up as it is up against the hemstitching process, and provide a nice contrast. I am definitely going to try the toilet paper technique! ( I happen to have a couple of rolls of off-brand tp languishing in my closet that I ordered somewhere at the start of the pandemic when it was almost impossible to find a place to buy or order it.) like the idea that the perforations will make it easy to remove.

The funny thing: You alternated left & right each pick.

Ha! You're exactly right! I tend to mimic where my feet are. So if I'm depressing the treadle on the far right, I toss the shuttle from that direction. Somehow, in my head, it helps me stay on track. Good catch!!
I use a thick yarn, but I noticed that I need to use more so the warp closes tightly

@@ActonCreative i cut the sides and open it up to make a long piece, then strips cut into one half, one quarter and two eighths of the bag width and procede weaving with the large first, narrow two last. Also, if i have enough length, I tie them together at the sides to keep them steady when I take it off the loom.
