Let's Talk: Should People At The Top Make Decisions For Our Dance Scene - Dance With Rasa

Ойын-сауық

Today's subject is an interesting one if you are interested to hear more about the dance scene and teachers and what happens behind the scenes. I was recently talking to another teacher about who makes the rules for our dance scene, and if people who are at "the top", should have the right to make the decisions for our dance scene in terms of what we teach, how we teach it and what our scene should look like.

I think all teachers should teach etiquette, origins of dance, basic steps, good frame, technique. I've probably left out something else important. After that, it should be up to the individual teachers. They know their students best and everyone has a different learning style, good teachers adapt to the students in the class. I'm with you Rasa. Thank you for the topic. As you say, people vote with their feet.

i think one thing I've noticed is that in some cases there are some teachers who are so very well-connected it seems they know they don't have to provide a quality class because they know they have a ticket back in next week. Blows my mind, people go back to these classes

Organisers of festivals say dancing is about 'family' for them but their behaviour shows otherwise... I believe we shouldn't be hardnosed and look at leaving money on the table. It should be about promoting accessibilty. Often if people want to only attend the socials and miss the rest. Have to pay expensive prices for stand-alone take-out tickets. I believe the approach of offering greatly reduced entry for social passes, would draw a bigger pool of numbers for the social dancing. It would benefit women the most ironically, because of the gender gap! Performers too, should have a free pass for the weekend, not pay to perform.I believe this would run counter to the typical business model but it would work.

Performers don't pay to perform, only those who were not invited but ask to perform to make a name for themselves. But I do believe that teachers and performers should be paid more in bigger congresses 😉.

Yes, that is true. The show-booked professional performers don't pay. But team members from dance school( who pay for costumes classes, choreography) paid on top.The weekend pass at one particular annual festival held here in NZ. I agree that professional performers are modern day workhorses, the bigger events should pay more.
