I do a bunch to keep my bike from being stolen. Like don't leave the bike alone. However, if i do leave the bike alone I have a chain lock and a bike u-lock and I have a secret weapon, a bike cover. They know something is under the cover, but don't know what so not as tempted to steal. oh... hide the alarm under the bike cover so they don't know where it is until it goes off

I use two cable/combi locks when necessary, but I also have ebike insurance that will replace my bike, if stolen.

İ used D lock with cable (diamond rated) plus alarm. İ agree that no bike lock is 100° secure but if you secure it in a very public area no one is going to use a noisy grinder for 5 minutes plus without drawing a lot of attention to themselves. For example if you are going to big supermarket secure it in an area near the entrance, as well as heavy footfall there are normally security.camreras - do not leave it in a more remote part of a large car park assuming that it cannot be seen by a potential thief.

I put my chain lock thru the frame AND the battery handle, just in case they want to take the battery and leave me stranded with no motor power. Plus i don't leave the bike unattended for a long time.

Yeah, I generally never let the bike out of my sight. If I have to lock it up, I use a chain type lock and a Abus type. I also try not to leave the bicycle any longer than a thief could cut through the locks. My previous trike was stolen from my house. Didn't have it locked up at the house. Since I moved I have not had a problem with thieves.

It terrifies me when i leave my bike when i go shopping. That lock and chain is a Monster, chasing bike thieves with it makes them run faster than benny Hill lol, in all seriousness though, if you have an expensive bike don't use a Poundland /Dollar store lock....Russ i wish i could send you a video of my Bike security set up, aside from the flamethrower 😆

I find the best thing to do is cover your bike and have an alarm.... Of course have a lock too but that's arbitrary really. If they can't get a look at you bike they're much more inclined to go to an easier target. With the tarp over the bike they don't even know if its a bike or a moped or what. It could be a 10% kids bike or a 5000 dollar Trek or whatever.

Bike is alarmed, gps, rotor lock and Ulock, they gonna have to work for it, and like you said, it all just slows them down and gives you time to react, there is no sure fire way to secure your bike other than maybe encasing it in concrete! 😅 I never leave my bike unsupervised though, always within sight and running distance! Also, having a mid-drive bike is easier to secure than a hub-drove, and a hub-drive is far easier to take, those hubs are not cheap! No thanks on the folding locks, the links are the soft point, so bloody easy to break no matter what brand you have, literally seconds if that is all you have on your bike!

Here in Sylacauga, AL it has either been raining, or too windy to ride. If the wind calms down, I'll take my ebike out for a spin this weekend. People who go around stealing ebikes, have the tools to cut through any chain, cable, or lock. The locks are there to keep honest people honest. So, if I go to the store to pick up a few items on my ebike, it comes inside with me. If the store manager doesn't like it, he can sign a statement accepting liability for loss or damage, or face losing my business. Of course, they won't acc3ept liability for the ebike, so it is let me inside with it, or my business goes elsewhere,

Saw a video on Reddit. A crook used a manual pipe cutter, to cut the tube the bike is chained to. So much for locking to car corrals at big box stores.

Like Russ said, if a crook really wants your bike then they will do whatever it takes to steal it, but if it's locked then the 'walking by' thief will not steal it as they don't have the tools or the time. A few weeks ago I had my e-bike locked and my alarm turned on, good thing coz this girl tried to steal it and when she saw it was locked and the alarm started she got scared and ran off LOL. These are the kind of thieves we try to avoid.

Also Russ, you said the right thing for real, because Ever Since COVID-19 And When A Lot Of People Lost Their Jobs Because Of COVID-19, E-Bike Stealing has gone Up by 10,000 Percent for real.

I would say first, locks are to make the thieves deside it would be to hard or take to long or to bothersome so pass it up for an easier target or it would draw to much attention.

I use a Litelok (grinder resistant u-lock) plus a cable for the wheels and an alarm hidden under the saddle. I also have the saddle attached to the frame by a heavy cable. Again, it will only slow them down...or, maybe they will take the bike beside mine!!

If all fails, make sure you have a GPS trAcker, like an apple air tag installed

I use a heavy cable and lock. Like you said, if they want it, it's gone. Battery angle grinders go through all.😢 On another note, got my first you're cheating comment yesterday 😂 I passed 2 lycra boys going up a long grade. Keep up the good work Russ!

E bikes are heavy there not bikes that you will put over your a shoulder and run away with them. Besides the chain I also use a Winx Lock a handle bar lock that locks to your handle bar grip keeping your brake applied so if the chain is cut the bike will not roll. Winx locks designed for Motorcycles but also Works on bikes. 🌴🤙🏽💙🌴

I don’t lock my bike up much. When I do it’s just at a community pool or going inside a grocery for 10 minutes. I use a real cheap cable lock that is fast to deploy (20 seconds, max). I’m just stopping joyriders. I think worry about thefts is overblown for most people. Riding around the suburbs I don’t have any worries about it. If you’re in a downtown area, you’re better off just having a cheap regular bike, I’ve seen people riding them a long time without incident in DC or locking up all day at the train station I take to work. Same bikes for years, not getting stolen. I’m in Paris this week, which people seem to doomsday about lately. Seems fine, I’ve had no issues. Lots and lots and lots of e-bikes (and even more regular bikes) locked up pretty much how you show here. If you’re in a city you can also just do bike share bikes, then it’s not your problem. You return the bike and anything that happens going forward isn’t on your account. They have e-bikes available, if you want.

My VOLT PULSE, three levels of security as standard and one more besided 1. swipe key that enables/disables the bike electronically 2. Abus rear wheel lock fitted as standard 3. Hefty chain with bayonette plug in and a loop to go around a stationary object 4. You can remove the battery and the bike is supplied with a clip on cover to go over the contacts, by contrast my Specialized Creo road E-bike has none of the above and cost twice as much

Regarding ebike security, I ride my old escooter when I go to Target, the bar folds down and it just fits on the bottom shelf of their shopping cart, and I take it with me in the store. Their bike rack is way out by itself, no thanks. I use a back-packers carbiner to hang a plastic bag of groceries from my belt for the ride home.

This video takes me back 2016-17 or so. Co-worker was interested in standard cruiser bike. Locked up bike w/14mm(or so)x 4ft long cable. Ready to exchange $$$/bike. -> 2022...Purchased 1st E-bike(prophetic?) +Rottweiler 8026 Armored cable +Bullox U-bolt & additional 4ft MasterLock cable. Added 126db Sowuno horn/alarm. If they want to "Snatch" this bike from me, wanna make it As to Steal it, as possible. BTW...All keyed lox, None numbered/combination locks!...Stay Safe, Ride Safer...Aloha from Hawaii

The New angle grinder proof locks are great but there cutting a space out the rails you lock the bike to now as it's faster n easier and they deal with the Lock later!

The bike locks you described are probably a good idea but if I was at a store to shop I'd take the battery out as well. It can rest comfortably in the basket in the store as I wander around. Just a thought.

Yeah the saddle is a good idea too. I've been thinking about changing the collar on the post stem to one that you have to tighten with a wrench though. These quick releases seem nice but they become a quick release to steal something. My front tire doesn't have the quick release which I like as well. Makes it a lot harder if they really want that wheel. LOL

I have the same chain lock and I add another two masterlock locks through the same two links as the kryptonite lock. The chain is harder to cut so if they decide they can cut the lock itself easier, they'd have to cut through 3 locks to get the chain off. I have that alarm as well and use a cable lock through the frnt tire and frame, and also thin cable lock to lock the saddle to the chain lock at the back

Don't forget to secure your saddle with a cable that can reach your primary lock and chain (especially if you're using a quick release for the seat). As mentioned, all security measures are to slow down or dissuade opportunists. In addition to the saddle cable, and an alarm (which also doubles as my bike bell), I use the Kryptonite New York 1275 Cinch Ring Bike Chain Lock...securing it directly to the frame with the disc lock (as I don't have quick releases on either wheel).

Nice advice, cause sitting on a seat post ain't fun, some bugger nicked my seat once, and i had to use my rucksack as a make shift seat to get me home after work, as for wheels i got burnt once someone stole my back wheel and that was a long walk home. I despise thievery especially taking ones mode of transport when trying to earn an honest crust.

You didn’t mention disc brake locks. You can get small cheap versions for $4 and others with built in motion alarms for $15. I swear by them. They are such a hassle for thieves. Also use multiple alarms ie. one on the frame, one under the seat and one or 2 disc brake lock alarms. The thief will be easy to identify because he will be the one who is DEAF. Also GPS and Air Tag trackers can help you find your stolen bike.

What about in addition to all those locks... take the ebike key with you!

Good Morning Russ. Hey, I just received my New handlebar Cam so now I can start making videos again, I'm very happy about that. My e-bike doesn't even fit inside those bike racks, I lock my e-bike through my frame and then through the Big part of the bike rack with a U-lock. I also have an alarm on my e-bike so if anyone touches my bike the alarm goes off. I have my e-bike and my son's e-bike registered with Project 529. Oh, One thing I also have as an added security is a PASS-CODE in order to turn my e-bike on, you need to know my 4 digit security code that I chose and it can never be reset unless I actually reset it. The bike shop where I bought my bike told me if I ever forget my code then the bike will become completely useless as they can't reset it. can´t find that really consistent. maybe it´s not that dangerous in austria, but as you say it doesn´t make too much sense to carry around these extra heavy parts, since anybody who really plans to steal bikes will work around it. so i myself put a simple cable around the frame and the back wheel against "casual" action. still i have a risk to loose any of my small bags with the tools - so, i never leave the bike alone for long - take it with me inside if possible.

I tape Tile tracker under the seat with hard to remove gorilla tape. Also have remote bike alarm that scares me when I forget to disable it. One time bike was stolen when I had no security but was able to find that person riding my bike and held onto it until he got off and walked away.

Have noticed, some companies engrave bike number on/around crank hub. It's a hassle to find but is doable....

I carry 2 big chains on in each pannier bag no big deal and I'm still worried 😅😂

I put air tags in all my e bikes.

Cable for front and rear wheels and keyp to lock frame to what eve. Still have a decal from the good old days, Protected by Smith and Wesson, just don’t know if I want to put it on yet, ( had them on my 64 and 66 chevy impala’s).

Hey Russ: what about Air Tags? I haven't used one, but might be another good option to track your bike if it gets stolen. Lots of good options for this on Amazon. I commute to work with my bike.....and actually take the bike into my office!

Air Tage can help locate a stolen bike, but be careful about tracking it down yourself. Many law enforcement agencies will not go out looking for it with you, so be aware. It won't help keeping it from getting stolen, but it could help you find where it went.

Hey Russ, I never ever leave my bike not for a second. I do have a motion sensor if it moves the alarm goes off. I do plan on upgrading it to the one with remote featured in your accessory list. I also have an Apple Air Tag to track my ebike as well. Like you said, if they want to steal it they will.

It won’t prevent theft but it could help locate the bike after it is taken. But be careful confronting someone afterwards though.
