I feel like August being implied to become the crown prince was his punishment for whatever he did. In this season both of them realized the privilege of freedom and the punishment of responsibility. This whole season the one thing August wanted was Sara, it's really poetic in that way

@meganmcleod6152 yeah for most part of the show it felt like that, but in s3 there were a lot of scenes that pointed to the otherwise, like when he told Sara that they can leave together and not come back, or when Vincent and nils told him that it sucks to be crown prince because now his freedom will be curbed and he looks positively distraught.

Small detail I noticed about August!! In the scene where he's talking with Vincent and Nils and they tell him that he would have been better off not in the monarchy, there's a closeup on August's face where that realization is sinking in, and then the camera zooms in on the chess king next to the chess board in front of him. It felt to me like the show was visually saying, "checkmate, August." And then, in the end, this character who spent all three seasons trying to control the people and situations around him suddenly becomes the one who is controlled. Checkmate. Really interesting and effective storytelling/filmmaking.

I don't think this season tried to give August a redemption arc, but more to humanize him to the point where we understand that even though he got exactly what he wanted, he was punished, you know? If he were entirely bad, his ending would be satisfying for him, which it wasn't, and we know it. And that made me like the conclusion to him even more. I always thought he should've been criminally punished, and he kept coming out of it unscathed throughout the seasons, until we see him falling in love with Sara and then losing her and how that breaks him in a way he didn't expect. He always wanted to be part of the monarchy, he always wanted to be next in the line of succession, and when things finally go that way, he doesn't even know if it's something he would like anymore, despite it being something he still thinks he wants - see him going after Sara and saying that he would do military training in the summer, but he could still visit her on the weekends. In other words, even after Nils and Vincent further fueling his doubts as to whether being Crown Prince would be good, he still doesn't give up on his own ambition and ego. And we, as an audience, know how much Wille suffered from this, how he never liked it and never wanted it, despite only having the courage to leave now, so we know it's a painful path to follow. The series has always revolved around Kristina's phrase in s1 that being a royal "It's a privilege, not a punishment", and the writing does an excellent job of proving us otherwise - being royal is actually the punishment. August will now be punished with exactly what he wanted from the beginning, and it's all his fault. He charted his own ascension to that point, which ironically is also his undoing.

The one bone I have to pick with this season was how the adults in the show managed Wille and simon's now public relationship. Like what do you mean simon didn't receive any pr training whatsoever?😭 And why would they make Wille be the one to tell Simon to delete his social media accounts? I feel like so many issues could have been avoided or at least lessened if they'd had a professional just knock on Simon's door to explain what being attached to the royal family meant and show him safer ways to interact on the internet as a "public figure". Like private account? Second account for close friends and family? Never heard of her. Also give that boy some security detail wth. Why would they wait so long he was receiving threats left and right 😭

Maybe I’m remembering it wrong but in one scene Willie’s on the phone with who I’m guessing is he’s assistant and she tells him about the video Simon had posted and Willie said he’d do it himself. I feel like Willie was trying to make sure that Simon had little communication as possible with the royal family because he himself hated how he was forced to live his life

I 100% agree with you, and I personally suspect this was done on purpose. Based on the reactions of the Royal Court, specifically the older man (forgot his name), I think they were hoping for Simon to break up with Wille due to external pressure. They absolutely knew how vicious the public can be and they made no attempts to prepare Simon and his family. It would have been simple just to assign and few body guards and hand a list of dos and don'ts to his mother. If you remember in the 5th (?) episode of s3, the old man suggests that the family moves because their house has too many windows. I think he was using the situation as an excuse to physically separate the boys.

I agree and I would love for this scene to be talked about more. Sara saying that yes, she has feelings for August but that sometimes romantic feelings might not be as important as a genuine friendship and also love for yourself, is such a powerful message. It's something I have never before seen portrayed in such a way. Usually it's always romantic love that is shown as the most important kind of love and the thing we all need to be happy. But sometimes it is the love for a friend, your family or for yourself that you should prioritize. I can't say how much I love that Sara did that ❤.

Listen, August is trash, he is and should be prosecuted for what he has done because it's a crime, however I'm completely impressed with the realistic way the made him more mature, the details of him not following the crowd anymore, his sadness because the school's closing, while still remaining a detestable person at times, it's very real as a development, especially if associated to the fact that he's understanding the hard way that all the privileges and glamour he wanted come with a price, that he'll be forced to pay. Honestly, even if I'm a bit scared because we know that very few sequels are good, I'd still want to see how August becomes and deals with everything, he must be really different from Wilhelm.

One of the bording schools in Sweden did close temporarily after reports of abuse between students, penalism and hazing had gone off the rails and a student had been burned with an iron by another student and more. There are only two bording schools in Sweden like the one described in the series, so Swedes think of the former real case during that plot. If the information that appeared in the series came out, it would definitively be investigations by the authorities here and if it turned out to be true the school would close most likely, temporarily.

I also liked the show, although I have to say I was a little disappointed about August‘s storyline. I kept waiting for something dramatic to happen with regards to his ED. Like him collapsing while rowing/ training or whilst drinking because he hasn’t eaten and is therefore weak. I think maybe the show was trying to avoid typical tropes and didn’t want to go with such an obvious plotline. But I really would have loved to see him seek help or also speak about it during these „therapy sessions“ with the teacher (I would’ve loved to see more of those in general). Again I think maybe they were trying to leave things to the viewer’s imagination or to show that some problems are longlasting and it might take people time to heal from and others to notice.

The tears totally got me, as well. And I am a grumpy, middle-aged, Indigenous woman. I saw it said somewhere else that it ended as predicted, but I truly don't think that's the case. Not only did the show give us about five red herring endings, but as someone who lives in a commonwealth country, the ending we were given for real was actually incredibly daring. The show drew on a number of real global royal family stories to bring Prince Wille's world alive, and therefore the ending in that context was brave, daring, and yes - a tad "revolutionary". Plus, this cast acted the hell out of this show. They were total fire.

This was so perfect a review, I'm actually going to save it to watch it again. This show was so perfect, especially for fans who were here from July 2021. Some of us learned Swedish because we watched the show so much. We consumed all the creator Lisa Ambjörn and Rojda content about what they were trying to say with this show. How seriously they took it made us all take it seriously. Watching insta lives of the intimacy co-ordinator Sara Arrhusius explaining how the scenes were created and giving us all a masterclass on what IC work is. The soundtrack intentionally chosen from diverse artists mostly from Sweden. Plus the cast, being so generous and engaging. Everyone involved creating the show respected the fans and welcomed the fandom to spread the message they were sending. Everyone felt validated and so it built over the 3 years. For it to be finally executed so well and concisely is the final gift. The amount of creativity it inspired is awesome to see. The fan art on insta and the fanfics written with really good research into Swedish culture are so impressive. I hope the people inspired by this show creatively, go onto create some amazing media, literature, and art that also helps them feel represented and teenagers feel seen. Lisa Ambjörn said that she wrote this show for her friends that she's had since school, with all the tropes and themes they would have liked to see. I think YR has a long legacy.

He is one of the most important characters of the show - his a catalyst for so much. So it makes sense that we eventually start to appreciate the nuance given to him and the growth he goes through. Having a complex villain played by a quite vulnerable actor has helped make the show so good. This is why he's a fan favourite I think.

Yeah, like the show didn't justify his actions, but it did make me feel for him as a person. From the sexual abuse trauma, to the implied eating disorder, and his general regret about the person he's become, they really had me concerned for him. Which just makes the ending all the more bittersweet, because he gets everything he ever wanted, but he's just starting to realize that it may not actually be healthy for him.

I really, really love your thoughtful analysis. It's an incredibly intentional story. so beautifully shot, love the dynamic of class, race, power, sexuality, mental health - completely gorgeous. And the acting! My gosh! The visuals! The music! The scene at the lake really shattered me in the best way. I love watching your review because it feels like you also get it. These are the queer stories we need! These are the stories we need!! My queer adult woc ass resonating with these swedish teens! BUT that's the universality of beautifully told human stories!

August is the perfect depiction of a broken guy with power, and there are many like him even in context of privilege. A sad sad character beautifully handled! I agree with everything you said but also i loved that sara and felices happy ending is to find each other rather than a man ❤

I actually think this was my favorite season. It went into deeper dives of other characters, had a lot more happening than Wilmon's will they or won't they, and had some interesting (if too brief) ruminations about real world consequences, privilege and class, unconscious bias, social media... It was the season with the highest stakes... for a lot of the characters. I also loved how tired Omar made Simon look, letting us SEE why he felt he needed to end it. He just didn't have the bandwidth to put up with the circus.

OMG!!! Yes yes yes to all of your opinion! You hit all the important points of this show in which NOT all viewers could get and it's frustrating!!! Some people keep blaming simon called him selfish and annoying it made my blood boil! Your review is such a fresh air amidst many reaction videos that only understand the characters halfway. And, YES, PLEASE, we need spin off, I'm not ready to say goodbye yet; but also, this ending is too much powerful and beautiful, it is perfect to end it this way. so yeah, i feel you so much!! Thank you for this! Love this!! 😭😭

the beginning of this season was definitely very slow and they were trying SO HARD to make us feel sorry for August, didn't work for me either. Even tho i felt bad for what Eric did to him, he chose what he did to the others later. The scene where he was telling his friends about his line to the thrown and they were like ' urggh brother urghh' I DIED, because he's been gunning for this the whole time and he didn't even stop to think about it. That Felice x Sarah relationship was so important to me and i feel like if Sara had made contact sooner she'd have forgiven her because she was MISERABLE. Ultimately, i'm happy that F ended up staying with her instead of going to NY. For sure peeped the sapphic vibes with her friends too but that last encounter with Rosh was unnecessary imo. Overall the writing on this show is so intentional, also love that last shot with Wille, because in s1ep1 when the show was introduced he did it too, its just a nice little seal off. i feel like Wille was definitely harsh with his parents but they kinda deserved that. Simon and Sara absolutely went through it this season but they were eating everybody up lmao. The actors are the real MVPs fr. i love this how so much, can you tell? also love your videos, you be thinking what i'm thinking 💌

I think Felice was willing to forgive Sarah before, actually she did, but she didn't know if the image she had of Sarah was real or a lie. She did something so unimaginable, not just to Felice but to her own bother, so she felt like "okaay, this girl is capable of something" that fact that it was her own protective brother. If had been just August, I think she'd forgive her easier, but she was questioning, I think, whether the moments with Sarah were real or she was always sneaky. It's hard to questions if even knew someone like you thought you did ... Is not how much bad they did, but whi wre they, even? Was it all to get what dhe wanted? Is she willing to backstab again? Etc etc I feel like Sara saying herself, because she wants to, the her and Simon was more important, that meeting her was the happiest thing of her life. She felt honesty. I believe she forgave Sara before that, she just didn't trust her yet. As someone who didn't speak to my best friend for a whole year (I am an adult) after a whole kife of friendship, I get it. It's baby steps into allowing yourself to deep into the love you feel for that person again.❤ It was perfect to me

fyi, when you said that three seasons for a high school show is a bit short and that they usually are like four seasons long, that might have to do with that your high schools in the US consists of four years. In Sweden, high school is typically only three years (if you don't have special needs, switch to another program, or have to re-take a year).

We’re a micro-generation that specifically feels too old to relate to younger Gen Z, but STILL young enough to not consider ourselves to be Millennials necessarily either (although Elder Gen Z is old enough to share some early childhood memories with younger Millenials) I’m so happy I discovered your channel. I felt the season was done in a hurry, as if the characters knew they had to finish it no matter what, many plots were left up in the air: August's eating problem. Progress in Simon and Willem's relationship and a more realistic ending. It is a very unpopular opinion, but what punishment does it have for August to become king if that is what he always dreamed of? It really bothered him to be close to Willem, but what makes you think that he will suffer if he disappears from the map.

The dating director in the BTS documentary mentions how she wanted to quietly subvert stereotypes with the characters. The popular girl isn’t blue eyed and blonde, she black with curly hair. The prince has acne, he’s not some perfect figure, which is also really good insight into Wilhelm’s character. I never noticed this until it was brought up but it is such a cool thing about the show I’m noticing so much more now.
