    To be fair the "botched call" was a penalty call not a goal call. There was another "botched call" that disallowed a Sharks goal in game 2 of this series, odds are it was gonna even out. Also based on the blood, the ref was bound to react accordingly. Vegas should have done a better job on the kill. When you play the more physically aggressive way Vegas does, you can't expect not to get called on an extra thing here and there when the refs expect it. Vegas shouldn't blame the call for their loss, it was that god-awful PK unit that sank them. I should clarify, I'm an Avalanche fan who was watching this game to "scout the competition"

    I agree, if Sharks had only scored one goal it wouldn't be a big deal. "It's a home game, they are down 3-0 and their captain got badly hurt in the play so 5 min is a lot but I can see the reasoning" would have been most peoples reaction. It's on Vegas that they came undone and threw the game because of one tough call.

    Hi Shannon. Glad I finally had a chance to sit down and hear your take on this game. As a Sharks season ticket holder, I was fortunate enough to be there last night and you are absolutely right, this was the most improbable series of events I've ever seen in a hockey game. I'm still in utter disbelief about what happened last night... hands down the most insane hockey game I've ever watched and I got to see it in the flesh. Unreal. Anyways, as someone who was at the game, I thought you might appreciate my take on the Pavelski incident since you really do get a whole different perspective on the game while watching live. I understand that you have expressed resentment for the Sharks numerous times throughout the history of this channel and please know that I hold nothing against you for that, but to say that there was no reason that cross check should have resulted in a five minute major is absolutely ridiculous. Are you seriously going to argue that a play which results in the opposing captain being knocked out cold in front of his home crowd, in possibly his last game with the Sharks, while the game is looking to be a sure victory for Vegas, is not going to result in a five minute major?? Nope. BS. I've watched enough of your channel to know that you know better than this. In that context, that play will result in a misconduct 11 times out of 10. What you didn't see were the numerous instances leading up to that moment where Vegas players behind the play took whacks and jabs specifically at Pavelski. There was one moment in the second period where Pavelski and Stastny got into a brief shoving match as the play transitioned away and Stastny took a shot at Pavelski's face, clearly intending to re-aggravate his facial injury. The ref saw it happen and skated alongside Stastny as he coasted off for a line change and said some words to him and the Vegas bench. That was their warning. When it happened again once the game appeared to be out of reach, the only option the ref had was to toss somebody. May have not gotten the right guy, but it was 100% the right call and ultimately Vegas showed that they don't have the championship resolve you need in order to overcome a situation like that. Thanks again for the video. I hope I was able to help clarify why that was called the way it was.

  • @rahvin37
    @rahvin375 жыл бұрын

    There's no double-minor on a cross-checking penalty, so it's either a single-minor or a major (which includes an auto misconduct). The refs thought Eakin's hit deserved more than a minor penalty. You can blame the refs for the call, which I think is fair, but you can’t blame them for allowing 4 goals in the same power-play. VGK's PK on that major was atrocious. That's on them, and not on the refs.

    It's a simple fact that the call is to the refs discretion. Pavelski was injured SERIOUSLY. I don't think the refs could see that, real time, and not call it a major. I'm a Kings fan, so have no love for either team. But that was a nasty incident. The cross check lead to the hit by Stasny, and the refs saw that, and decided to call it a major. It probably shouldn't have been a major, but the refs decided it should have been, and I think that's fair. It's their call to make, and I don't blame them for it. The contact was severe enough, being off the faceoff, and the severity of the injury, that they called it a major. The point about the Vegas PK is also great to make. They played so great on the PK all series, but just disappeared for that 5 minute call. BUT even more than that call, and that PK, Vegas blew a 3-1 series LEAD against the Sharks! The San Jose Sharks, who have been chokers since before they were even called the Sharks! Can't blame game 5 and 6 on a 5 minute penalty. Vegas had plenty of chances to end the series, and couldn't do it. That's on them, not the penalty. They couldn't end the series in game 5 and 6. They couldn't kill the 5 minute penalty, and they couldn't score in OT when they had A LOT of chances in OT. More and better chances than the sharks.

    Even as a Sharks fan myself, I thought we would be out in Game 6. Vegas collapsed altogether and it seemed like they were still a little bitter after tossing almost 60 shots at Jones in Game 6 and losing. Vegas had all the chances in the world. Nice little reference to old shark days and also Oakland Seal days. I'll be bitter, but not violent

    I can agree with the second half of your comment, but it's Refs taking the rules into their own hands that is why fans don't like the Refs in the first place. The amount of unique biases over the hundreds of Refs in the NHL could sway any given game in so many different directions. I'm not specifically a Sharks fan, and I love watching Pavelski play but the emotion from an injury should not, in my opinion regardless of who gets injured, affect the call on the ice. If Pavelski gets injured, the refs call it the same way as if Tom Wilsom, Darcy Tucker, Sidney Crosby, Scott Stevens and anyone else you wanna name gets injured on a play like that. The entire narrative of the playoffs for these two teams as well as any and all potentual teams they could face in future rounds is altered because one Ref decided the penalty should be more severe because of an injury.

  • @Saturn_orange

    @Saturn_orange

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think that the penalty was fairly called. I am a Chicago fan. I didn't have much stake in the series no matter what outcome. In my opinion it would have been more just to call it on Stastny since he finished the check, but I do also think that the refs called the major because of the crosscheck from Eakins and the follow through from Stastny which would warrant a major penalty. The game misconduct to Eakins was to not allow retaliation which would have the game get out of hand because of the injury. I think Vegas fans can be mad about the call, sure, but there were other opportunities for you to win the series in this game and the other two before this one. If Vegas scored one more goal this game would have been dusted because we all know the most dangerous lead in Hockey is the 3-0 lead in a game

    That's the thing that's overlooked. With a 3-0 lead, Eakin has no reason to cross check off a faceoff. If you win it, back off and control possession. If he had lost, try to get it back. Cross-checking at that point is a dumb play, and it cost him.

    @Sub Zero First, you mean pseudo not pseuda. Second, apply your logic to game 2. SJ has momentum, scores in the opening minutes of period 2 to take a 4-3 lead then has that goal disallowed on a bad interference call. Vegas scores on the ensuing PP and wins the game thereafter. Refs affected the outcome of that for Vegas. This balanced the scales. There is no double minor for cross-checking, so it was either a single minor or a 5 minute major with an automatic ejection. The Ref made a split second decision that the penalty deserved more than only a minor, so the major was called. The Knights choked and allowed 4 goals in 4 minutes; they failed to clinch the series in the previous two games. Taken as a sum of all parts, the Sharks won the series fairly. Welcome to the heartbreak that is playoff hockey for all but one team every year. Good day sir.

    Die hard VGK fan just giving my two cents. Was it a penalty? Absolutely! Was it worthy of a five minute major? In my opinion no. Even though they had to kill a five minute major, there is no way we should have given up 4 goals in 4 minutes. That is ridiculous in a playoff game, let alone a game 7! It hurts more because it was against the Sharks, which quickly has become our biggest rivals in the league. The point I think no one has really touched on is even though they made it look easy, it is beyond difficult to score four goals in four minutes in any game, even if you are on a power play for the duration of it, so kudos to the Sharks for actually pulling it off! Plain and simple, and remember I’m saying this as a die hard Knights fan, if we can’t hold a three goal lead with less than ten minutes left in game 7 of a playoff series, then we don’t deserve to win the series. Plus, don’t forget we gave up a 3-1 series lead and couldn’t close out the Sharks in three straight games. Bad calls aside, we had a great season and I fully expect us to be right back in the playoffs again next season. As much as I hate to say this as a VGK fan, congrats to the Sharks on winning the series. Good luck the rest of the way.

    Well reasoned. Great video...YT served it to me and you got a new sub. I'm a VGK fan and am not even mad...still in shock and awe. When the 5 minute power play was awarded I turned to my wife and said, "They can score again and again and again"...and when the first goal went in so fast I said, "We're gonna lose." Had no idea they'd score 4 in a row of course. But you could feel the change. Your Peter Klima story was again exactly what I told my wife about when I noticed the Sharks were leaving Goodrow on the bench in OT. "Hate" is a pretty strong term ;-) I prefer to think of it as the coach/general using his players/tools correctly. Watching the power play clips in the couple days since the game, it's hard to "get" the pre-penalty vibe of the game (very low, steady energy for Vegas) and the sharp contrast with the intensity of the Sharks' as the 5 minutes started. I hope future viewers will get a clear picture of how crazy this was and what happened. I'm a student of momentum and morale in sports and business and this was an amazing example of that kind of shift. I like the effort you've put into your white board. Ha! just noticed you're a BC guy...I'm from there and so a Canucks fan but moved to the US 10 years ago.

I think Stastny had time to realize Pavelski was vulnerable, and that downward follow-through with his arms was completely unnecessary, perhaps even deliberate though I don't think he intended to injure like that, I think he intended to ensure Pavelski went down while he was falling. As a current high school hockey player in Minnesota, when Stastny skates into Pavelsky, Stastny was doingng his job as a left winger. When the puck is dropped in the d-zone on the left dot, a left winger on that side is expected by every coach in all of hockey to shoot the gap to get to that defensemen. He was skating through and Pavensky fell into him without any time to react, so he wouldn’t have gotten a call, due to a freak collision when shooting the gap on the draw, which happens so much in hockey when a centermen bumps into the winger shooting through (not to that extent but it still happens). As for Eakin, I’ve seen hits like this on the draw a lot actually, sometimes they’re called, sometimes they’re not. Pavelsky won the draw and when you pull back on your stick as a centermen on the draw you move your weight slightly to your heels so when Eakin crosschecked him (in the chest, not head area) he fell a lot easier than normal. The injury was not due to Eakin but the weird collision with Stastny which wouldn’t result in the rule where a player get a 5 minute major for a crosscheck that causes injury because the crosscheck wasn’t what caused it. As for the penaltykill. Momentum in a hockey game is weird and it is so hard to stop. Especially scoring 6 seconds into it and in that atmosphere. The only reason why I’m not boiling angry is because my cousin Nate Schmidt will be coming home earlier this year than last year and we can hangout a little bit more and I can talk to him about that call.

I was steamed when the league took that huge expansion fee from Vegas and in return gave them a wayyy favorable expansion draft allowing them better players than they would had they been given a similar draft as Columbus and Minnesota got in 2000. There is no doubt that Eakin's cross-check didn't warrant 5 and a game. But Stastny throwing Pavelski down onto the ice, the proximate cause of his apparently significant head injury...that's 5 minutes for roughing (no doubt in my mind, even given the NHL playoffs standard disregard for the normal rulebook...Stastny wasn't fighting for puck possession, the puck was 20 feet away along the boards - this was NOT a hockey play, it was an unwarranted attack that may not have been intended to injury Pavelski, but injury was a likely outcome given the nature of the foul). Mike Matheson committed an almost identical assault on Elias Pettersson this past season, throwing him to the ice while the puck was in a galaxy far, far away (which resulted in an injury that left Pettersson out of the lineup for a few weeks, and who knows what the long-term impact of that concussion will be to the young superstar?), and he got 2 games' suspension. The incidents are alike in every respect except for where they occurred (off a faceoff vs. along the boards). So even if these kinds of incidents were reviewable by the game referee, I think seeing the play re-played would only have caused Vegas more grief, because in addition to 2 minutes for cross-checking against Eakin (it was undeniably a cross-check), Stastny would incur 5 and a game; thus the Sharks would be on a 5-on-3 powerplay for 2 or less, AND SJ scoring would only make it a 5-on-4 for the remainder of the 5 minutes. Plus, Vegas would have been without Stastny instead of Eakin for the remainder of the game, and I think he's a MUCH bigger loss. Pavelski was fouled by two opponents within the span of a couple seconds. In the confusion of the event, the wrong call was made. But the right call would have been worse for Vegas. And I say all of this as an unbiased observer, a Canadian hockey fan who doesn't think the NHL belongs south of the 40th parallel at all, and all such teams (13 of them, from Washington in the east to St. Louis and Colorado in the center, to San Jose in the west) are illegitimate (it's worth noting that ALL of the Western division finalists are on that list...indeed NINE of the illegitimate teams made the playoffs...revenue sharing, coupled with low income tax rates in many of the southern US jurisdictions have created some excellent teams, which nobody really gives a crap about because they're too busy watching COLLEGE football...nevermind the NFL, people in the South of the US care more about COLLEGE SPORTS than professional hockey smh).

    Just remember, the Officials awarded a 5 Minute Power Play, not 4 PP goals. I don't think it was a 5 minute major, but that's what the call was and they had to play through it. I didn't think of the 5 minute Power Play when the 4 goals were scored, I thought of the inability of the Vegas PK Unit killing off that Power Play successfully. They completely crumbled. Not only that, but they had 3 chances in the series to close out the Sharks, and they failed to do so. We could be sitting here talking about how the Sharks couldn't score on that 5 minute major, because all night that game, they were horrible on the Power Play. 0-4 beforehand. Bottom line is Vegas crumbled when it mattered most. Sharks got an opportunity to get back in the series, and the game, and they took it.

    Islanders had a very similar game last year where they were down by 3, got a 5 minute power play, scored 4, let up a tying goal in the final minute and won in overtime
