Let's talk about "The Hunt for Gollum" announcement...

Фильм және анимация

J.R.R. Tolkien created an amazing world in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and all of the other amazing stories in Middle-Earth. Warner Bros Discovery announced yesterday that their new movie, "The Hunt for Gollum", will come out in 2026. Let's talk about it!

I think your comment about the search being conducted by the Orcs/Sauron being the perspective for THFG is very good. It would allow for a lot of different treatments to the story development (horror story, political thriller, psychological exploration, etc) and allow for further exploration of the orcs/Sauron that Rings of Power started. I would not worry about any recasting - James Bond and Spider Man show a quality actor allows the story to continue and that is what matters most with fantasy/sci-fi stories. I think the only issue would be the chance this becomes a morality story that reflects the producers' sensibilities (or Warner's) rather than Tolkien's. I am of the view that Tolkien wrote his books on two levels - a continuation of the epic story that humans have used as a ethical/moral guidepost to life (think of how 'Apocalypse Now' and 'O Brother, where are thou?' are re-tellings of the Odyssey) and a commentary on how industrialization/modernization corrupts human nature/society. I have not seen the movie 'Tolkien' but assume it accurately captures his life experiences and they should be the lens through which to interpret the books. Yet I think THFG could be a discussion of the grey areas overlapping 'Good and Evil', which Peter Jackson kind of did with King Thranduil in the Hobbit. Or a further dive into Gollum's mind as he becomes a prisoner of these two opposing forces and effectively tortured by both. However, we could get another 'Arwen as shield maiden' treatment (that I still feel is gratuitous versus what ROP does with Galadriel; I believe Eowyn was properly spot on). Otherwise, at least they are creating new content rather than rebooting (which will happen in 20 years once they think they have a new market).

Yeah, so much is up in the air…I don’t see there being much in the way of forced love interests, especially for Gollum. As far as worrying about the producers’ sensibilities - this is the same team as The Hobbit and LotR movies, so I’m not too worried about that. But as someone who’s as much of a nerd on Middle-Earth as I am, I just want quality. Really hoping that the story is good!

according to the book Legolas is the one to inform the Council of Elrond about Gollum's escape, he must be involved in the Gollum story somehow...

It does make sense if Mirkwood is involved in the story. Seeing the fan film really opened my eyes up on some of the possibilities of what we could see, and I actually was pretty impressed with it, since it was definitely more Aragorn-focused. There is potential here, I just want it to feel…I guess necessary is the correct word.

Well, I mean - they both have rights to Lord of the Rings, Warner is theatrical. Definitely seems like a team of people with experience in Middle-Earth, so at least they’re starting well!

I think there is potential to start telling the story from a future point, depending on the perspective of course... Could be that we get an older King Elessar reminiscing and in that way Viggo could ease us into a younger version of Aragorn like Ian Holm did for Martin in the Hobbit. If they have rights to the Appendices, then we might see the aftermath of Lotr. They probably wanna connect all the new films somehow, right?

Your guess is as good as mine! The Appendices are vast, so there is a lot they could do. The Hobbit ended up feeling hollow to me, so I’m hoping there is substance in this story.

Well, while I’d say it’s not impossible, that feels outside of the scope of this story. It would be interesting to see what life is like after Sauron, for sure.

@@order42show well, if we get a frame story, one where Eldarion is retelling the story to his younger sisters would be fitting - all inconsistencies or exaggerations could be written of the "hearsay" thus allowing for some "creative liberties"... ;-)

I'm reminded of Jeff Goldblum's quote in Jurassic Park "You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, you didn't stop to think if you should". In other words nothing more than a cash grab, probably over laden with CGI like the hobbit, as opposed to LOTR that worked it's ass off to use practical effects wherever possible.

You may be right. Although a lot of the same people are involved in the production, the fact that there’s a release date before the script is even finished seems like a pretty quick turnaround. And…when it comes to studios and IP…the idea of “should” doesn’t matter to them. Especially these days, quality or “respecting the IP” isn’t the concern. The only question is if it’s profitable.

It took me a while to jive with Viggo's Aragorn when I first saw Fellowship because he's kind of slight and he has that reedy, non-kingly voice that - at that time - sounded nothing like what Aragorn had sounded like in my head. I know it's cliche at this point to fan-cast Timmy C in _EVERYTHING_ , but you simply _HAVE TO_ (you just _GOTTA_ ) admit that as a skinny, dark-haired, thin-voiced white boy with killer acting chops and a level of masculine screen charisma which transcends his boyish face and physical slightness, he seems to me like a pretty dang solid match for a younger version of Viggo's Aragron. I think he's probably also the closest thing that generation of actors has to a legit movie star now too, so I'd be flabbergasted if they didn't at least reach out to him.

Look, if they announced him, I’d be down. I just sort of feel like you need someone a bit older. But who knows? Especially since, if they’re sticking to the source, it should take place mere months prior…I find the project sort of fascinating.

Completely understandable! The first Hobbit movie felt pretty good, but it very quickly felt stretched and unnecessary. As I said though…I think there’s room for some great storytelling here, and I just hope that the story feels worthy of telling instead of it just being a cash-grab!
