Let's talk about the AMARETTO SOUR

In today’s video, we’re making an Amaretto Sour! This recipe is different from others. Back in the 70s the Amaretto Sour was simply amaretto and sour mix, but since, it’s received a number of revisions - most notably, that of Jeffrey Morgenthaler. In his recipe, a stronger spirit’s added, boosting the drink’s firepower. Inspired by Morgenthaler, we’ll add apple brandy to our Amaretto Sour to compliment the almond flavor and add an orchard fruit element to the drink. Perfect for fall. Cheers!

More like late 90s/early 2000s, but yes. I still love an Amaretto Sour, but I'm definitely making it with high quality ingredients and fresh juice when I make them nowadays! I'd say I make one at least once a month.

Such a guilty pleasure cocktail. No one doesn’t like it, but few will order it around their friends! 😂

as a bartender, i couldn’t agree more with this!!!
Hi, I am an italian bartender based in Berlin. I love your videos. Anyway, nobody in Italy knows that Amaretto you used, I don't know if is cheap or super expensive - I won't google it because I don't care. The Amaretto liquor is Disaronno ;)
Morganthler's Amaretto sour was one of the first drinks I discovered on the internet and made at home and thought. 'This is fun, I'm going to keep making drinks at my house!' so it has a special place in my heart.

I'll never forget that, either. I'd been watching Small Screen Network, and somebody mentioned Jeffrey Morgenthaler. I Googled him, and two things stand out to me to this day: his crack at the Amaretto Sour(which was my (now ex-) wife's favourite drink), and his home-brewed ginger beer with Kaffir lime leaves. His tequila-sherry egg nog recipe is worth a visit at this time of year as well.
This is the best amaretto sour I’ve ever tasted my normal recipe is 45ml amaretto, 15ml bourbon, 30ml fresh lemon, 20ml 1:1 syrup after watching a couples months ago I’m proud to say that I’ve managed to put your cocktail on the menu at the restaurant I work at, it’s a real hit (I’m also using 3years calvados it’s the cheapest “apple brandy” we have) the owner and managers weren’t too happy but after seeing how popular it was he had nothing to complain about, I’ve been following you for almost 2 years as I would have never come as far as I have now thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and spreading the word, you do so much more for people than you’d think, I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart
This is fantastic! If you swap the apple brandy for rye whiskey, it cuts the sweetness a little and gives it more body.

Agreed, I've been using a cask strength 4 grain whisky when I don't have bourbon and feel like using something a little too expensive (it's less than an ounce so I don't feel too bad) and it's reeeeally good. I usually use simple instead of demerara syrup, but Anders' video got me wondering if orgeat might work well with this, particularly with the spicy rye. I'll try that the next time I make it.
@lollygee172

Great idea! I like orgeat - now I’m thinking of other combos- orgeat instead of amaretto plus bitters, and trading rye and brandy….or a bit of both.
@j.c.withers

This is the way. The spice of the rye offsets the sweetness this drink can have with bourbon. It's just fantastic.

From an other barman and cocktail enthusiast, lovely content! Fun fact, I'm from Italy and for the Amaretto Sour we use "Disaronno" amaretto liquor, wich is the most common amaretto liquor here: also, it's called "Disaronno" because it was born and still produced in the city of Saronno (in the north of Italy, about 1/2 an hour from Milan) and in italian Disaronno means "From Saronno". I work in a small city wich is pretty close to Saronno, so we have the priviledge to have it produced "around the corner"

Disaronno is common in the US as well, I have a bottle on my shelf!
Hey Anders! The Amaretto Sour was 100% my drink of choice as a new drinker in my early 20s (this was in the late 2000s). I liked it because I was a kid who didn't like how alcohol tasted, and these tasted like candy. They were easy to order because everyone just poured the Amaretto/Sour Mix version, took two seconds for the bartender to make, and a similar amount of time for me to finish. While I still like them, I don't even have a bottle of Amaretto in my house anymore, but you're video is making me rethink that. I even have the Laird's already, and do like Whiskey Sour-style cocktails as that was something I moved on to early. I'll probably be making one of these in the near future.
Amaretto Sour enjoyer here! Going to love trying this version, but my go to that I really enjoy is: 2oz Amaretto 1oz lemon super juice .25oz simple syrup(rich) .25oz maraschino I think the maraschino gives just enough extra flavor and bitterness to take this drink to a different dimension while keeping it low proof.
@rubo1964

if you added maraschino then no need for simple syrup.Amaretto is sweet and Maraschino is sweet why add more sugar?

That's just the way I like it. I typically drink pretty dry cocktails, but when I am in the mood for an amaretto sour I am looking for more of a dessert. So if you want less sweet simply leave out the simple😉, also depending on the amaretto you are using it can be more or less sweet.
@Tomlong65

Some of my frequent favorites is something I call "lime in the coconut" which I am sure has an existing analog but it is just: 2oz rum(over proof, typically) 1oz lime juice 1oz unsweetened coconut water And bitters if I am feeling it. And what I like to make as a Gin Oldfashioned: 2oz gin .25oz lavender syrup 1-2 barspoons Fernet Branca for bitters 1-2 drops Orange blossom water And express and garnish with lemon peel.

Amaretto Sour is one of the first cocktails I learned to make! I've loved them ever since.
I make these all the time since my girlfriend loves them. I use Morgenthaler’s recipe except that I prefer Rye to the cask-proof Bourbon. The bar I used to work at also had a version on the menu that was very popular. In my opinion, you have to serve it up and make some hearts with bitters in the foam alongside the cherries.
We have been making the amaretto sour you shared 4 years ago any time the mood hits us for something sweet. It's my mother's favorite, and we are required to make a batch of them every Christmas. I have a nephew who turned 21 in the last year and it got back to me that his drink of choice is amaretto sour... so just two days ago I went searching your old videos to send him the link. I can only hope he goes down the rabbit hole and binge watches your channel. He will be the best educated bar tender at college. Thank you for the endless inspiration.
Yes, our family serves amaretto sours at every major family event. Thanks for elevating our experience!
I am a Amaretto Sour drinker, I have done it with brandy and calvados. They are both really good.
Proud amaretto sour drinker! Love the idea of subbing applejack (which I actually have) - can’t wait to try.
Yo! So i made this but instead of Apple Brandy, I used Cognac and no egg white and it is still amazingly tasty! I gotta say, I think Morgenthaler's Amaretto Sour is definitely in my top 10 favorite drinks!
Always a great day when Anders drops a banger 🔥💪
This is my wife's favorite drink. I usually make her the Morgenthaler version, but I have Laird's in the cupboard as well so I'll give it a shot!
Amaretto sours are a tradition in my family around the holidays! Most of my family arent big drinkers, so an easy, sweet amaretto sour is just the ticket!
I started my drinking life on amarettos. Toasted Almonds and Sours. Nice to see the Sour have an upgrade!

I love amaretto sours. Thanks for sharing this recipe
man I was waiting for this cocktail for 2 years. I can't wait to try your version ! kisses from Switzerland
Have got to try this one!
This was my drink of choice when I first started drinking/clubbing. I haven't had an amaretto sour in ages, but now I have to add your version back into my rotation. Thanks for always elevating the staples!
Fantastic. Can’t wait to try this. Have a bottle of Amaretto that I haven’t touched in years. Same with the apple Brandy. So many bottles I need to find new drinks for. Yeah!!!!
Found your channel a few weeks ago, I’m not really a drinker but I will try this. Sounds like something up my alley
Love this recipe Anders. Never would have thought of it myself and personally consider it a definite improvement over morganthaler's from the perspective of it being an Amaretto drink first and foremost. And perfect for fall. Thanks!
Loved the new condensed intro and the goofy energy in this one! I love Morgenthaler's recipe and I just picked up a bottle of Laird's bonded. Making this tonight!

Love the cocktail. Love the glass as well. Very cool looking
I sure do love Amaretto sour. And normally I do the Morgenthaler version. And now you gave me a new one to try. Thank you!
Amaretto sours were the first cocktails I started making at home about a year ago. Im excited to give this recipe a try!
Never heard of it. Never had one. But now I will, for sure. Love Amaretto.
One of the only cocktails my dad would drink, so I grew up loving them. Definitely going to give this upscale version a whirl with an amaretto from my local distillery.
Awesome drink Anders!! Thank you for the recipe definitely have to try this one sometime.
Amaretto sour is my favourite drink, thanks for making a video on it❤
amaretto sours are one of my fave cocktails to make... can't wait to try your recipe anders
That is a really great drink. The applejack and the amaretto really play well off each other. This one is going in the rotation for sure!
Amarreto Sours are my favorite drink. Thanks for a new version. 🎉
Love this and love the amaretto sour!!
Love Amaretto. I usually make a quick Godfather on the rocks, Amaretto and rye whisky.
Dude been waiting for you to do this video since I’ve known you! It’s my favourite drink. It got me into making cocktails! And I love it! Great video!
It was my fav drink and I am thinking of returning to it upscaled.

Love a good Amaretto Sour! Will try your recipe for shure!
Amaretto sour is my absolute favorite drink. I've shared it with all my friends and now many of them love it. I will definitely try this recipe at home, drinks that cooperate brandy is in general very interesting and good tasting.
I had one a while ago and it was great, definitely going to make some this winter
This is my moms favorite drink. Been making it this way for some time. She loves them. The Lairds is a fantastic recommendation!
Love the video and the fun idea of mentioning what "cocktail day" it is. I've swapped in Applejack for whiskey sours before but never thought of doing the same in an amaretto sour. I recently switched from Desarona to Luxardo, and this seems like a great opportunity to try it out on. Thanks again, guys, and cheers 🍻
Thank you!! Amaretto sour is in my top three. 😀
Always love the history at the start.
I made this with calvados and it tasted amazing!!! Thanks Anders :).
Nice update to Amaretto sour! In lack of apple brandy in my bar I’ll try with some cognac tonight.
Fabulous! I’m a fan of the Amaretto Sour from the 1980s. Yours is magnificent straight up!
Well, you got me again! I didn't care for the versions I have had before but your version got me hooked. I actually tried it with Laird's Applejack as well as BIB whiskey and they both are awesome! Now to get a nice fire going so I can enjoy this sour the best way I know how. Thank you again good sir!
The history segment is always fascinating
Man, looks fantastic
Merci beaucoup, Anders !
I love that rocks glass so much.
I have been drinking amaretto sours for many years. i have to try this recipe!
So happy this came out on National Amaretto Sour Day! Very timely.
My favorite cocktail by far.
The timing of this is hilarious! In the last week I had just tried a whiskey sour with Amaretto and loved it. I didn't know there was a whole history to the drink.
Yes! The old amaretto and sour mix was the first cocktail I loved at the dive bar we were young. It was that or rum and coke or beer or tequila shots… I enjoy the improved versions occasionally now and I can’t wait to try yours with apple brandy!
my wife's favorite drink. used to make it with jameson to beef up the abv, have more recently turned to the morgenthaler recipe as inspiration as well. don't sleep on mellow corn in there as well!
I’ve never had one. But I Will. Thank you.
Amaretto sour was my cocktail of choice when I first started drinking in my 20s. I definitely burned out on them. Now that I’m in my 40s and my husband likes to make craft cocktails (which I love) I am looking forward to trying your version and seeing if I can rekindle my love for this drink!
Made this (like I make all of your cocktail recipes) for the family tonight. They all loved it! Have to say though, adding at least a half ounce of bourbon really helps this drink
Great video. I'll definitely have to try this one. I like the Morgenthaler amaretto sour, but I can see how apple brandy and amaretto would go well together.
I dint have Amaretto sours very often but when I do I enjoy it quite a bit. I need to try it with apple brandy now.
This one is a favorite for me and my girl, it's such a wonderful treat :D
I love amaretto sours! My favorite version so far is made with dark rum. Your version sounds so I'll have to try it out.
Lookin forward to making this. Love amaretto, but never had anything to make with it that wasn't the standard.
Jeffrey morgenthaler's recipe has become one of my favourite cocktails. So I'm very curious how this concoction of yours is gonna taste!
Great video. Still my favorite drink for almost 20 years now! I do amaretto, Simply Limeade (or Lemonade), egg white, a high quality cherry, and splash of Coke.
Hands down one of my favorites
My fav version is morgenthaler’s but with Bardstown bourbon’s new rye whiskey that is finished in toasted cherry barrels. That cherry note with the amaretto is just perfect
My favorite drink!!
Keen to try this. I’ve made Morgenthaler’s recipe, but with cognac instead of bourbon and it’s great. Tonight I dug in my in-laws cabinet and found some B&B (Benedictine and Brandy) and used that instead. It was also nice.
I enjoy mine with whiskey and really enjoy it but will for sure try the apple branch. Thank you!
When you talked about the whiskey in the amaretto sour I immediately thought of using Calvados instead. Definitely trying this!
Great one. I'd like to try this...especially if craving something sweet.
This drink is soo good I recently had one for the first time and I think it will be one of my go to drinks. I will be ordering one from different bars to get an idea as to how it usually tastes like. First one was amazing though.
I'm so excited to make this tonight I have been looking for something else to make with my Applejack
Amaretto sour is the best, and you just gave me an idea for a new delicious version
Haven’t tried this one. I will remember it.
I will be making these for my family thanksgiving. my mom hates bourbon cocktails so this will be perfect for them
Yeahhhh! It is the best cocktail!
one of my fav drinks of all time
