    I think there is definitely Russophobia going in the world, but it usually does not manifest itself in overt acts of hostility and violence against Russian people and more difficult to detect. For example, people in the United States have grown up on Hollywood movies. There is hardly any movie that displays Russian characters in a good way. The Russian is always the bad guy, the villain, the person to be afraid of and/or to hate. Look at Rocky for example. Rocky was such a lovable guy, but Ivan Drago was so much disliked that even the Russian audience of the boxing match cheered for Rocky instead of their own countries hero. I can't think of one classic American movie that shaped people's minds that portrays Russian people in a good light. This has an effect on how people see Russians. I agree that it isn't as bad as Russian state TV makes it seem, but it is there ,especially because of the Cold War and unfortunately it seems like it will only get worse because of the situation in Ukraine.

    Russophobia is not fake. I've loved russian culture since before I even got informed on politics. and alot of my online accounts use Cyrillic. I cannot express to people the amount of times even as a non russian. people have told me to "stop invading ukriane", and been general assholes towards me. I have a friend. The only russian in his school. Since the war started he's frequently complained to me about how everyone in his school even the teachers have suddenly started treating him like an enemy. These are just personal examples of Russophobia I've experienced.

    Actual Russian here who’s been to many different countries. Judging by your nickname, you’re a foreigner living in Russia. Well, I can’t listen seriously to the Russian propaganda machine when they spend enormous amounts of resources and time just to talk about the “Russophobia” that allegedly is so rampant around the world. There’s a Russian saying: “[You’re] able to spot a speck in another man’s eye, but that beam in your own eye stays unnoticed”. When you think about all the discrimination that non-Russians bear in Russia (physical harm, work discrimination, mockery, cursing, housing discrimination etc)… If Russians really were to taste even 1% of their own medicine lol. For example, imagine if, say, people in the US started listing their properties stating “Westerners only” just to exclude Russians because they don’t like them. The Russian propaganda machine would have a field day with that. Meanwhile, right now it’s a common practice in Russia to discriminate against people of several “unwanted” post-Soviet countries or even ethnicities who have their own homelands as part of Russia today. And it’s not just about them. Russians hate Poles, Ukrainians or people of Baltic States because they stand up against them. Russians see other Eastern-European countries as inferior “little brothers”. It’s fine to toss around, say, Moldavians or Bulgarians, Kazakhs or Mongols as irrelevant or underdeveloped nations. They hate Eastern Asians for being soulless slant eyed insects. They hate Africans for the color of their skin, oh they have billions of slurs for them blacks. And of course they hate Westerners for being “liberasts”. I can go on for hours! Basically Russia is a Xenophobic s-hole country that has no right to screech about Russophobia considering how xenophobic is it itself. Grow some skin, for God’s sake! Isn’t that what they always suggest those pesky (insert racist slur) people of color in the US should do, eh? Plus you’re literally killing your own neighbors for some bs reasons lol.

    As a Russian (and Latvian) speaking person born in Latvia I have to disagree with you slightly. I think unfortunately Latvian government has repeatedly made numerous mistakes in how they manage the fact that half the population are born in Latvia but are native Russian speakers. The politicians always used the conflict of 'Latvian speakers vs Russian speakers' to stir up the anger between the two groups instead of trying to unite them. We tried to get Russian a minority language status but failed. My dad was born in Latvia and voted for its independence, but was given the 'alien' passport. Growing up in many situations I felt like I had to carefully judge whether it's best to speak Latvian ir Russian to someone otherwise they would judge me. I think that everyone in Latvia should know to speak Latvian and yes people should feel united as all of us being Latvians. But the reality is that at the moment there is still a divide between us based on the languages we speak. And what's even more worrying is that because many Russian speakers in Latvia feel disliked by their government, they turn to the Russian media and become completely brainwashed by all the propaganda.

  • @BeaJonite

    @BeaJonite

    What you’re saying is definitely a problem that we face, but I wouldn’t call it Russophobia or all-out hatred. There are some aggressively oriented people (but that’s the case everywhere), and sometimes one might hear a snarl towards speaking Russian, but generally Russians can still live happily here, and normal people will treat them with respect. Media integration and language integration is always problematic and tricky in small countries like ours. I do agree that in many cases the language disparity has been “mishandled” - such as last year when there was very little info available in Russian about vaccinations and Covid regulations. There also is a lack of good quality non-Kremlin Russian language TV channels in Latvia, which forces many people to flock to watching Russian propaganda channels (my grandparents used to only watch Perviy Baltiyskiy and NTV - I imagine if they were still alive we’d be having difficult conversations about the war). But considering Latvian language was being actively oppressed all throughout the Soviet era, now we hold a lot of love and pride for it, and it’s understandable it is the only state language, same as Ukranian is in Ukraine. Still a lot to improve for sure though!

    Russophobia exists as a form of putting blame on all Russians for our government invading Ukraine, including those who opposed it all along. Such people as myself who opposed the regime even before the war, and always hated people who spread propaganda, but just happen to born Russian, are now for real getting hated by being put guilty for this. And some people even say that we should've overthrown the government to not let this happen, just seriously? Would you be able to do this? I don't think so. We were just living our lives, we didn't have any special political abilities to change anything, we didn't even have freedom of speech and always being silenced. But some people are idolizing Ukrainians and putting blame on all Russians. Only because Ukraine got invaded didn't made all Ukrainians pure people, there might be cruel people among them as well, same as with Russians. I know that all this bs about nationalists is just a Russian propaganda, but some people actually tend to over exaggerate things, leading to hate towards Russian nation as a whole. And it's fair to blame those who spread propaganda, these are just bots or brainwashed people. But i hate being mixed with them together, because i don't share their words, their stupid ideas and their cruel mentality. So what else could i do, to not being put to blame for what i wasn't in charge of? And there is also another thing causing that, and it is sanctions. If i complain about sanctions ruining my life, it doesn't mean i don't feel sorry for Ukrainians who are being in a worse situation, it just means that i consider that my own problems also exist. I honestly don't understand the purpose of sanctions against Russian people, such as blocking Visa and Mastercard only for Russian users, as if it's a racial discrimination. What personally affected me the most, not allowing me to buy internet education and forcing me to degrade because of it. It is literally a russophobia, the purpose of such sanctions on your nationality is unknown for me, because it doesn't help stop the war and only makes Russian people suffer more, the good and the bad, all at once. Meanwhile sanctions against Russian officials are highly underperformed i'd say, many of them are still didn't get affected at all.

A neutral/scientific approach means not taking sides and not sticking to a narrative/pre-statement. You already explain Russophobia from a Western point of view (by keeping to a political narrative) - which is already an error in its analytical approach. A definition of a term does not start by a statement but ends with a statement/summary, meanwhile distancing from taking sides. Furthermore and in order to have a balanced analysis, exclude political discussions and investigate on the cases you describe as exceptional cases (analyzing statistics, making interviews with people etc).

    I am Russian. I was not a patriot of Russia. I liked the West with their tolerance and democracy. I wanted to live in the West and develop games. Did I do something bad for the West and people in general? Now it turns out I'm the worst person that everyone should hate just because I'm Russian. And all this because of the war in Ukraine, the reasons for which the Europeans do not want to know. Well then. Hate me just because I'm Russian. Hate other Russians. Just what will it give? I knew many Russians who didn't like Russia but loved the Western world. But after the Western world showed double standards, Nazism, racism towards the Russians (who by the way did not support the war in Ukraine), they sharply became patriots of Russia and sided with Putin. Thanks to Russophobia in the West that unites the Russians and turns people against the West. You showed your true hypocritical face. Don't be surprised because you will also be treated the way you treat Russians.

Many had been thinking that this is the way a president is supossed to look like before the war. For decades the wounds of the war will not heal. We should not hate people just for being Russian, speaking Russian or because they feel themselves part of the Russian culture. Russia has a right to exist, as such, as any other ethnic group and nation. But we and they have to do our and their best to fight Russian imperialism, aggression, Putinism, the "system" and leadership, ideas of a "Russkij Mir" or "Novorossija" or new Soviet Union. A free, reborn, modernized Russia has to be a truly democratic society, that wishes no harm done to other sovereign nations, that actively mends what has been broken around it and solely has limited defence capabilities to protect its own terrority against attacks- no nuclear or other non-conventional weapons, no offensive forces, no militaristic ideology ... If Russians define themselves as "free Russians", that will actively want to work against the terrible "version" of Russia, that exists today and aim to restore their nation's reputation, I think they deserve our support and help. So in case you are Russian, the choice is simple: either you ride Putin's train to whereever it ends. Fine, but then I don't like you. Or you define yourself as a "Free Russian" and do your best to be the counter image to the Russia we see today, and I think we can talk and be friends. A nation, culture, nationality can be terribly misused, as it has also happened with the German people during the Third Reich Nazi regime, 1933-45. Denmark has had its own lack of sympathy against Germans, especially due to 5 years of WW2 occupation, but today we have a normal and friendly relationship with modern Germany. The same should be the case with Russia if and when there are enough Russians willing to liberate their nation. Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰🇺🇦 (and "Free Russia"-flag - it appears to exist, but not as an icon on my phone)
